A timeout points to a connection that may not be getting established; dropped frames after connection usually point to an unstable path or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. The phrase “BSNL VPS” is ambiguous: it does not establish that BSNL operates the VPS, or that BSNL blocks YouTube traffic.
First confirm what “BSNL VPS” means
“BSNL VPS” could mean a VPS hosted by a service associated with BSNL, a VPS reached through a BSNL internet connection, or another service described that way. There is no verified provider identity or evidence here of a BSNL-specific YouTube block, route problem, or port policy. Identify the company that actually hosts or manages the VPS before attributing a fault to BSNL.

The checks below isolate the endpoint, outbound network path, and encoder. They apply to a VPS sending a live stream to YouTube; they do not assume who operates the VPS.
1. Verify YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream’s Stream settings.
- Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL currently shown for that stream into your encoder. Do not rely on a remembered hostname or path.
- Confirm the URL uses
rtmps, notrtmp, and that your encoder supports RTMPS. - If the encoder reports an SSL error, check that URL and specify port 443 as YouTube Help recommends. The YouTube Live API guidance specifies a TLS connection on port 443 and SNI set to the ingestion hostname.

2. Check outbound firewall rules from the VPS
A VPS encoder sending video to YouTube makes an outbound connection. For RTMPS, check whether outbound TCP traffic to the configured endpoint on port 443 is permitted. Opening inbound ports or configuring home-router port forwarding is not the default fix for this VPS-to-YouTube problem.
Check both firewall layers
- Guest operating system: Inspect the VPS firewall rules for outbound TCP to the configured endpoint and port. Check any host firewall or security software that could also filter traffic.
- Provider controls: If the hosting service has a firewall, security group, or network-policy panel, check its egress rules separately. Provider-edge controls and the VPS’s own firewall are different enforcement points.
Use the endpoint and port YouTube currently provides for the stream. Do not open arbitrary ports as a diagnostic shortcut. A TCP port check can indicate whether a handshake seems possible at that moment, but it does not validate the RTMPS/TLS handshake, SNI, stream key, or a sustained broadcast. Likewise, a successful TLS connection does not prove the route will remain stable throughout a stream.

3. Check DNS, address family, and route
- Resolve the configured hostname on the VPS. Test from the server running the encoder, not only from a personal computer on a different network. Record the answers and the time of each test.
- Compare IPv4 and IPv6 deliberately. If investigating an address-family issue in OBS, change only that setting and note the result. OBS documents IPv4-only as a troubleshooting option and recommends returning to the dual-stack default if it makes no difference.
- Repeat tests when the stream works and when it fails. Compare DNS results and connection outcomes with UTC timestamps. A single successful test does not establish that the path is reliable.
- Inspect the path with traceroute or MTR. These tools can show route changes or where diagnostic replies stop, but intermediate network hops may suppress probes. Missing replies at one hop alone do not prove that hop is dropping your stream traffic.
For general VPS connectivity checks, see Vultr’s network connectivity troubleshooting guide. Route traces are clues, not conclusive fault attribution: a problem may be in the VPS configuration, its host network, transit, or elsewhere along the path.
4. Tell a connection timeout from stream instability
RTMPS connection timed out or SSL error
A timeout suggests the configured connection is not being established. Recheck the current URL, protocol, port, DNS resolution, and outbound filtering before changing video bitrate. An SSL error makes the RTMPS URL, port 443, TLS, and hostname/SNI checks especially relevant.

YouTube live dropped frames after connecting
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable path to the remote server or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. This is different from a failure to establish the connection in the first place.
For controlled diagnosis, change one setting at a time and note the outcome. OBS suggests trying another server, lowering the bitrate, leaving Bind to IP at Default, testing IPv4-only where appropriate, and checking firewall, antivirus, or VPN interference. Dynamic bitrate may reduce drops when capacity varies, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying cause and can lower video quality. See the OBS dropped frames and network issues guide.

If lowering bitrate stops the drops, the connection may not be sustaining the original rate, but that result alone does not identify whether the limiting point is the VPS, host network, transit, or another part of the route. A stream that works over a different network is useful for comparison, not proof of who is responsible.

If the endpoint, local firewall, DNS, and encoder checks do not explain the fault, send the actual VPS provider a compact incident record. Ask it to check egress filtering and the upstream route at the reported times. Include:

- Failure timestamps in UTC and whether the problem is continuous or intermittent.
- The exact encoder error or relevant log lines.
- The current ingest hostname, protocol, and port, without sharing your stream key.
- Whether a TCP connection and TLS handshake succeed, and the DNS answers observed from the VPS.
- The guest firewall and provider-panel egress rule state.
- Repeated traceroute or MTR results from both a working and a failing period.
- OBS dropped-frame behavior and the configured bitrate, if the connection establishes but degrades.
OBS notes that ISP-side changes and unexpected congestion can affect a route, and advises contacting the network provider when software-side checks do not resolve route instability. Ask the company that actually supplies or manages the VPS to verify its egress policy and upstream path; do not treat anecdotal reports about BSNL fixed-line routing as evidence of a VPS restriction.
