If OBS reports an RTMP 404 while connecting to YouTube, compare OBS’s server address and stream key with the current settings for the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check that the protocol also matches: RTMP, RTMPS and HLS use different connection settings. YouTube’s published help pages do not define “RTMP 404” as one specific fault, so treat the code as a symptom, not proof of a particular cause.
Verify the YouTube address and key in OBS
Use the settings for the exact scheduled or current stream you intend to broadcast. A URL or key copied from another stream, an old setup, or an unrelated guide may not match.

- Open the correct stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Live Control Room and select the intended scheduled or current broadcast. Open its Stream settings. YouTube describes the Stream URL as the address to enter in your encoder so it knows where to send the feed. Manage live stream settings.
- Compare the server address. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Check the service and server fields; compare the server or URL with the Stream URL shown for that broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to copy the URL into the encoder’s server setting. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Compare the stream key separately. Check that OBS’s key matches the key shown for the same stream. The server URL and stream key are separate settings. YouTube’s setup instructions say to enter the key in the encoder’s Stream Key field. Do not share the key: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start OBS and check YouTube’s incoming status. Watch Live Control Room for an incoming preview and any health or error messages. These messages provide more specific troubleshooting information than the 404 alone. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages and live stream troubleshooting.
Check whether you are using RTMP, RTMPS or HLS
These protocols are not interchangeable. Confirm the intended protocol before changing OBS settings or copying a different address.

If the address looks right but OBS still fails
Refresh the key only when appropriate
If you suspect the key is stale, or YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points to an encoder-start problem, generate a new key in Live Control Room and update OBS with it. A key reset invalidates the prior key, so update the encoder before trying to start again. This is a documented troubleshooting step; it does not establish that a 404 specifically means the key is wrong.

Use the exact error and Live Control Room status
Note OBS’s full error text and check whether YouTube shows an incoming preview or a health message. The official help pages advise checking dashboard messages and troubleshooting the encoder connection, but do not assign a single definitive meaning or dedicated fix to an OBS “RTMP 404.” Avoid treating the code by itself as proof of a bad key, account problem, or endpoint-routing issue.
Check HDR-specific protocol settings only if relevant
