If your YouTube live stream stops after your Windows PC has been idle, first check whether the computer went to sleep, whether closing a laptop lid triggered sleep, and whether the sleep timeout changes on battery. The screen turning off is not the same as the PC sleeping. If Windows stayed awake, investigate YouTube playback quality and your network instead; sleep is a possible cause, not the explanation for every interruption.
1. Check whether Windows is sleeping or only turning off the display
A sleeping PC may stop normal networking. On devices that support Modern Standby, Windows can quiesce network activity during sleep and restore connectivity when the PC resumes. That can interrupt a live stream even if the computer reconnects afterward. The screen can also turn off while the PC remains awake, so a dark display alone does not prove sleep.

When the interruption happens, note whether the PC needs to resume or show a sign-in screen, or whether only the display went dark. Also note whether the stream fails only on battery, only while plugged in, or after closing the laptop lid.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Review the sleep timeout for both plugged-in and battery use, where those options are available. For a diagnostic test, set sleep to occur later than the time at which the stream usually disconnects.
- Keep the screen-off timer separate from the sleep timer. You can let the display turn off sooner while preventing the PC from sleeping during the test.
- To compare power modes, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Try a less restrictive mode temporarily and see whether the failure changes. Available modes depend on the device; this is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed YouTube fix.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Check the sleep timeouts under both On battery and When plugged in. The settings can differ, so check the one that matches how you were using the PC when the stream stopped.
- On some PCs, the settings include When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network. If present, note its current value when diagnosing a sleep-related interruption; availability depends on hardware and the manufacturer.
- On a laptop, open Additional power settings > Choose what closing the lid does and review the lid-close action.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC still works, but Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

If you use a laptop lid
Test with the lid open, then inspect the lid-close action in the power settings. Many laptops are configured to sleep when the lid closes, which can explain a stream stopping immediately after you shut it.
Do not change adapter settings without a reason
Network-adapter power features vary by hardware and drivers. Options such as selective suspend or device sleep on disconnect are not universal fixes for YouTube playback. Investigate adapter-specific controls only if the symptoms point to the adapter and the relevant setting is available.

3. If the PC stayed awake, check YouTube and the connection
YouTube recommends checking the connection, trying another playback quality in the player, and testing on another device. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can cause live-programming issues or delay even when a network seems good.
- If other apps or websites also lose connection, investigate the broader internet connection rather than treating this as a YouTube-only problem.
- If only one YouTube stream is affected, try a different playback quality, another YouTube stream, or another device. A change in result helps narrow down whether the problem follows a particular stream, playback setting, or device.
- If several devices have the same issue on the same connection, compare their results before changing Windows power settings.
4. Narrow down the cause with a controlled comparison
- Sleep or display off: Did Windows resume from sleep, or did only the screen turn off?
- Power source: Does the problem occur on battery, plugged in, or both?
- Lid state: Does it happen only after closing the laptop lid?
- Scope: Do other apps and websites lose connectivity, or only YouTube?
- Playback: Does another YouTube stream, playback quality, or device change the result?
Change one condition at a time and observe whether the stream still disconnects. This makes it easier to distinguish a sleep or lid-close trigger from a network or playback issue.
