To send video from FFmpeg in a Docker container to YouTube Live, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key, then configure FFmpeg to publish to that endpoint. The key is a secret publishing credential. Docker does not change how YouTube accepts it, but the input file, network access and secret handling must be set up for your particular container.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours; confirm availability in YouTube Studio before troubleshooting your container. - An FFmpeg build in your chosen Docker image with the protocols and codecs required by your input and output.
- A video file accessible from inside the container, or a live input that the container can reach.
- A stream created or selected in YouTube Studio, with its server URL and stream key available.
This guide gives the FFmpeg command pattern, not a Docker image-specific launch command. No particular image or deployment has been established here, so check your image’s documentation for mount syntax, environment-variable names, and supported secret-delivery options.

Get the YouTube server URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab and create a stream or select a scheduled one. Reusing stream settings may also reuse previous settings and keys. YouTube’s encoder setup
- Copy both the server URL and the stream key from Live Control Room. The URL identifies YouTube’s ingestion endpoint; the key authorizes your encoder to publish to it. YouTube describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage live stream settings
Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public container configuration, source control, screenshots or logs. Depending on the encoder interface, the URL and key may be separate fields or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the format expected by the endpoint and your FFmpeg command.
Make the video available inside Docker
FFmpeg sees the container’s filesystem, not your host’s filesystem. The input path in the command must therefore exist inside the container. Make the video available there using the mount or storage mechanism supported by your particular Docker run or Compose configuration, then verify the in-container path before starting the stream. For a camera, capture device or remote feed, the container must likewise have access to that input.

Because the image and deployment are unspecified, there is no safe universal docker run command, mount flag or secret variable to provide. Consult the documentation for the exact image and deployment you use. Avoid embedding the stream key in an image or a checked-in Compose file.
Publish with FFmpeg
For a video file, the command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -i /media/input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This is an illustrative pattern, not a command tested against a particular Docker image or YouTube event. Set the variables securely in your environment, or substitute a securely supplied endpoint in the way your deployment supports. Confirm that the path is valid inside the container and that its FFmpeg build includes the selected codecs and protocol. Choose the endpoint’s transport
Use the server URL supplied for the stream; do not change its scheme by guesswork. If Live Control Room provides an RTMPS endpoint and you want encrypted transport, use that exact URL. YouTube documents RTMPS over TLS/SSL on port 443, while its default displayed URL may still be ordinary RTMP. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as encrypted RTMP. Start and check the stream
- Start FFmpeg inside the container and watch its output for input, codec, connection or publishing errors.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the preview. Check that the intended video and audio appear, and confirm that the event’s visibility and scheduled timing are correct before going live.
- Test in advance and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. If sending primary and backup feeds simultaneously, allow additional capacity for both. YouTube streaming tips · Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
- Stop transmission using the workflow for your event. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Common problems and fixes

| YouTube does not accept the stream | Confirm the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours. Recheck that you copied the matching server URL and stream key from the selected stream. |

| Connection fails or the preview stays empty | Check FFmpeg’s output for protocol or network errors, verify container network access, and use the exact endpoint provided in Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, make sure you selected the RTMPS URL rather than changing an RTMP URL manually. |
| Video or audio is missing or poor | Check the input stream, FFmpeg build and encoding options, then review the Live Control Room preview. Leave the upload headroom YouTube recommends. |

Copyright, reused video and YouTube rules
A working stream key only lets your encoder send a feed; it does not grant rights to the video, music or other material in it, nor does it guarantee that a stream complies with YouTube policies. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and copyright guidance before streaming. Scheduled streams can be tested privately or unlisted if you do not intend to make the event public; verify visibility in YouTube Studio.
