Treat your YouTube stream key like a password. YouTube describes it as the stream’s “password and address”: the encoder uses it to send a feed that YouTube accepts. Keep it out of screenshots and public posts. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes who can view stream settings from who can reset a key; OBS’s available guidance does not establish whether every local or uploaded diagnostic log redacts it. If you think the key was exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in OBS.
What the stream key does—and why it is sensitive
A stream key is a credential entered in encoder software so YouTube can identify and accept the incoming feed. It is not the public URL for watching your stream. YouTube calls stream keys like a stream’s “password and address” and explains their purpose in Manage live stream settings.

Do not display the key on screen or include it in screenshots, chat messages, configuration exports, or public support posts. Anyone who obtains a usable key may be able to send an encoder feed to the associated stream. The safe response to a suspected disclosure is to rotate the key, rather than assume that hiding the settings field afterward undoes the exposure.
Who can see or reset it in YouTube?
Access depends on channel permissions. “Can monitor a stream,” “can see its settings,” and “can reset its key” are different capabilities; do not infer one from another.

These role details are documented in YouTube’s channel permissions guidance and its stream settings instructions. The documentation cited here does not spell out every credential-reveal case for every role and account configuration, so it would be too broad to claim that only Owners and Managers can ever see a key.
YouTube says channel permissions let people use channel tools without access to the owner’s Google Account, and recommends delegated access instead of sharing account sign-in details. Give each person only the role their work requires.

What OBS does—and what its logs establish
OBS has a stream-key field in its settings, with a show/hide control. That confirms the key is part of the encoder configuration when entered manually; it does not establish how every local file, backup, diagnostic log, or upload handles it. The OBS Project’s stream settings interface source documents the field and control.

OBS creates a log each time it runs, and its support instructions explain how to upload a current or last log when requesting help. The available OBS log-upload guidance does not confirm whether current local and uploaded log formats redact YouTube stream keys. Therefore, do not assume a log is safe to share just because it came from OBS—or assume that OBS necessarily wrote the key into it.

Before sharing an OBS log
- Open and inspect the actual log and remove any credential you find before posting or sending it.
- Check screenshots, configuration exports, and support messages for visible keys as well.
- If a key may have appeared in material you already shared, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
What RTMPS protects—and what it does not
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL, providing encryption for the connection in transit. You can select an RTMPS preset or enter an RTMPS URL in encoder software, as explained in YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
Transport encryption does not secure a key exposed through account access, a visible settings screen, an unredacted diagnostic file, or a screenshot. It protects the connection between the encoder and YouTube; it is not a substitute for controlling access to the computer and channel, inspecting files before sharing, or rotating a potentially exposed key.

Are YouTube server logs visible to channel users?
The documentation cited here covers YouTube channel roles, encoder setup, and transport—not the contents or retention practices of YouTube’s internal server logs. It does not establish what YouTube records internally or whether ordinary channel delegates can read those logs. Do not treat “server logs” as a file you can inspect in YouTube Studio, or assume a particular internal logging or redaction practice without documentation.
What to do if your key may have leaked
- Reset it in YouTube Studio. Open the relevant stream in Live Control Room, go to the Stream tab, and use the reset control for the stream key. YouTube says this requires channel Owner or Manager permission.
- Replace the old key in OBS. Enter the newly generated value in the encoder’s stream settings and save the change before sending the next feed.
- Review channel access. Remove access that is no longer needed and use delegated channel roles rather than sharing the owner’s Google Account sign-in details.
- Inspect material before sharing it. Check diagnostic logs, screenshots, configuration exports, and support posts for exposed credentials. Remove any key you find; do not rely on an assumed log-scrubbing rule.
- Use RTMPS where supported. This adds encryption in transit, but does not undo disclosure or replace key rotation.
