YouTube can buffer even when your broadband plan is fast because the speed reaching the playback device may be lower or less consistent than a speed test suggests. Compare another video, device, and connection first; then test a lower video quality and apply the fix for your device. These checks help isolate the cause without assuming your internet provider—or your router—is at fault.
Why YouTube buffers when your internet is fast
A fast home internet plan describes the service you buy, not necessarily the connection YouTube is receiving at the moment you press play. Wi-Fi distance, obstructions, interference, and other devices using the network can affect playback where you watch. The browser, app, device, video, and selected resolution can also matter. YouTube identifies connection speed, screen size, source-video quality, and browser support for newer formats as factors in stream quality. YouTube Help explains how video quality is selected.

One speed-test result is only a snapshot. Test near the playback device, especially for a TV, and compare a different connection or a wired computer connection if practical. A change in playback after switching connections points toward the connection path, but does not identify the precise fault. YouTube recommends trying another connection and, for computer troubleshooting, suggests a wired connection as a comparison. YouTube’s buffering and loading troubleshooting guide and TV playback troubleshooting provide device-specific steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck whether the problem is the video, device, or network
- Try another video. If only one video loads slowly, the issue may be specific to that playback rather than all YouTube videos.
- Try another supported device or browser. If YouTube works elsewhere on the same network, focus on the original device, app, or browser. If several devices and streaming services struggle, investigate the shared network or device setup.
- Compare connections. Where practical, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, bearing in mind possible data charges. On a computer, try Ethernet if available. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what affects playback.
YouTube recommends trying a different supported device if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve playback. If multiple streaming services are also affected, YouTube advises consulting the device manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Test whether video quality is asking too much of the connection
In the YouTube player, open Settings and choose Quality. Temporarily select a lower resolution. If playback becomes smoother, the connection or playback setup may not be sustaining the higher-quality stream; this test does not, by itself, reveal which part is responsible. YouTube may adjust quality automatically, and you can also select it manually. YouTube Help: video quality settings.
YouTube’s support guidance lists these approximate sustained speeds for each resolution. They are recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or a promise that playback will be smooth on every device or network path. The support page does not state a publication year; figures below are from YouTube guidance accessed in 2026. YouTube Help: check internet speed and data usage.

| Video resolution | Approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 20 Mbps |
Run a speed test close to the device playing the video, not just beside the router. YouTube specifically recommends testing right next to a TV when diagnosing TV playback. A wired comparison using a compatible Ethernet connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is part of the problem; it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guide.

- Close and reopen the browser, then try the video again.
- Update the browser and restart the computer if playback remains slow.
- Close other tabs and applications that are not needed, then retest.
- Clear the browser’s cache and cookies.
- Temporarily disable extensions or open an incognito window to compare playback. YouTube notes that ad-blocking extensions may affect playback.
- If you are using Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or compare against a wired connection where possible.
These checks separate browser and device issues from connection problems. YouTube’s computer troubleshooting guidance includes restarting and updating the browser, closing tabs, clearing cache and cookies, checking extensions, and trying a wired connection. - NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Fix buffering in the YouTube mobile app
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, if available, and replay the video. Watch for mobile-data charges.
- Clear the YouTube app cache, then try playback again.
- Check for app and device-system updates.
- Restart the phone or tablet if the problem continues.
If YouTube works on one connection but not another, that comparison is a clue about the connection path; it is not a definitive diagnosis. YouTube’s mobile troubleshooting instructions include trying a different connection and clearing the app cache. See YouTube’s buffering troubleshooting steps.
Fix slow YouTube on a TV
- Close and reopen the YouTube app.
- Check for YouTube app and TV-system updates.
- Restart or power-cycle the TV or streaming device.
- If the TV uses Wi-Fi, test near the TV, move it closer to the router if feasible, and reduce obstructions or interference.
- Temporarily reduce the number of devices using the network, then compare playback.
Run any speed test close to the TV. If other streaming services are slow as well, check the TV or streaming-device maker’s support guidance; the fault may not be specific to YouTube. YouTube’s TV playback troubleshooting guide.
