If text looks blurry or soft on an ultrawide connected to your Mac, start by comparing the display’s resolution settings. Apple Support advises changing the resolution for a working external display with a blurry picture, and notes that a display’s native resolution may look sharper than a scaled one. The best setting depends on both text clarity and comfortable size; a resolution change will not fix every cause.
Why does text look blurry on a Mac ultrawide?
Several different issues can produce similar symptoms, so identify what is changing before replacing hardware or applying a model-specific fix:

- Resolution and scaling: Different modes can change both apparent sharpness and the size of text and interface elements. Apple says native resolution may look sharper than scaled resolution, but a native mode can also make elements smaller. Apple Support’s external-display troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another resolution when a working display looks blurry.
- Cable, adapter, dock, or hub: A connection path that does not support the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate can limit the available mode. That makes the connection worth checking; it does not mean every blurry display needs a new cable.
- Software or monitor firmware: Apple says these can affect image quality and the resolutions or refresh rates available. For a third-party display, follow the manufacturer’s firmware instructions rather than assuming every brand uses the same menus or process.
- Model-specific scaling behavior: Vendor HiDPI instructions may apply only to certain displays and Macs. They are not a universal fix for all ultrawides.
How to make fonts sharper on the screen
1. Record the current display mode
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Select the ultrawide and note the resolution currently selected.
- If the resolution choices appear as thumbnails, Control-click the thumbnails and choose Show List. Turn on Show all resolutions if that option is available to reveal additional choices. Apple’s display-resolution guide describes these controls.
2. Compare the available resolutions
Try the default resolution and the scaled choices available for your display. Check two things together: whether text looks crisp and whether it is large enough to read comfortably. Native resolution may improve sharpness, while a scaled mode may give you a more useful interface size. Apple cautions that scaled resolutions can affect performance or whether app windows fit on screen, so judge the mode in the apps you use.

There is no single resolution setting that is right for every Mac and ultrawide. Compare the modes your Mac actually offers rather than assuming a particular scaled option or HiDPI setting will be available.

3. Check the cable and connection path
- Reseat both ends of the video cable.
- Check that the cable and any adapter support the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use.
- If the display connects through a dock or hub, temporarily connect it directly to the Mac and compare the result.
- For USB-C adapters, verify that they meet Apple’s stated DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt compatibility requirements for the connection.
A cable or adapter change is relevant when the existing connection limits the signal. It will not correct unrelated scaling preferences or characteristics of the display panel. Apple’s troubleshooting page covers cable and adapter capabilities and recommends connecting directly while checking a hub or dock.
4. Update macOS and check monitor firmware guidance
Install current macOS updates, then check the display manufacturer’s instructions for any firmware update that applies to your exact model. Firmware steps and menu labels vary by brand, so do not apply instructions for a different monitor.

5. Use HiDPI instructions only if they match your monitor
BenQ documents a model-specific process for the PD3420Q, PD2705Q, PD2506Q, SW270C, and SW272Q. Its instructions include checking firmware for some models, verifying the cable configuration, enabling the resolution list, and selecting a HiDPI or default option. BenQ says the described HiDPI feature applies only to Macs with Apple silicon. Check the model and BenQ’s current instructions before using that process; it should not be generalized to other ultrawides or Intel Macs.

If a selected resolution leaves the display blank, Apple says to wait 15 seconds for the Mac to revert automatically. If it does not, press Escape. If the screen remains blank, start the Mac in Safe Mode and select the Default resolution in Displays. Apple’s resolution guide provides the recovery steps.

How to compare modes—or choose a replacement
When deciding between available modes, compare the trade-offs that affect everyday use:
- Text sharpness: Judge text at your normal viewing distance, not only by its apparent size.
- Text and interface size: A sharper-looking mode may make menus and other elements too small for comfortable use.
- Resolution and refresh rate: Check which combinations your Mac and the full cable or adapter path support.
- Window fit and performance: Confirm that scaled modes work well with your apps and that windows fit as expected.
If none of the available modes suits you and you are considering a different monitor, compare its native resolution and pixel density at the intended screen size and viewing distance, available macOS scaling options, Mac compatibility, and the bandwidth required by its cable or adapter.
