Angular NG01002: Missing Control Value — Causes and Fixes

Angular NG01002 occurs when setValue receives an incomplete value for a FormGroup or FormArray. Compare the incoming shape with registered controls, then complete it or use patchValue for an intentional partial update.

Angular error NG01002 means a value passed to setValue() is missing an entry for one or more controls registered in a FormGroup or FormArray. Supply a value for every control when using setValue(); use patchValue() when you intend to update only part of the form.

What NG01002 means

NG01002 is Angular’s “Missing Control Value” runtime error. It indicates a mismatch between a form’s registered controls and the value supplied to setValue(). Angular describes the method as strict: it expects a value for every control. The error is about the value supplied to a form update, not a browser, network, or installation problem.

It is also distinct from NG01203, which concerns a missing custom-control value accessor. Angular lists both codes in its Error Encyclopedia.

Choose between setValue and patchValue

Method Use it when What the value must contain
setValue() You intend to assign values to every registered control. A complete value for every control in the group or array.
patchValue() You intend to update only some controls. Values for the controls you want to update; a partial update is acceptable.

Angular’s NG01002 documentation recommends patchValue() for intentional partial updates. Do not switch methods automatically: if the form is supposed to receive a complete value, fix the missing data instead.

Fix NG01002 in a FormGroup

Compare the object passed to setValue() with the controls registered in the group. For example, if the group has controls named first and last, this value is incomplete:

{ first: 'Nancy' }

Include both control values when setting the whole group:

{ first: 'Nancy', last: 'Drew' }

If only first should change, use patchValue() with the partial object instead. The FormGroup API documents the group’s value-setting methods.

Fix NG01002 in a FormArray

For a FormArray, compare the supplied values with the registered controls, including their order. If the array has two controls, ['Nancy'] leaves one without a value; provide an entry for each control when calling setValue(), such as ['Nancy', 'Drew']. See Angular’s FormArray API.

Trace where the value becomes incomplete

  1. Read the error details. Use the named control, if provided, as a starting point for checking which registered value is absent.
  2. Inspect the form definition. List the controls in the FormGroup or the controls and order in the FormArray.
  3. Inspect the value immediately before setValue(). Compare its keys or entries with the registered controls.
  4. Follow the data source. Check API responses, partial state updates, and object spreads. An object spread can still omit keys if its source object does not contain them.
  5. Choose the appropriate correction. Map the incoming data to a complete shape if the whole form should be set, or use patchValue() if the update is intentionally partial.

Without the form definition and the actual value at the call site, the error alone cannot establish which upstream source caused the omission.
