Twitch’s Affiliate program gives creators a specific set of activity and audience milestones to work toward. Affiliate tools include subscriptions, Bits and Cheering, emotes, community settings, and ads. If your stream is built around recurring live interaction, those tools may fit the way you want to engage viewers. Twitch’s feature documentation does not show that this approach will earn more or attract a larger audience than YouTube.

Make the decision using your own audience and schedule
- Start where the people you hope to reach already watch live content; do not assume either platform will find an audience for you.
- Pick a format you can sustain. A consistent schedule only helps if you can realistically keep it.
- Decide whether you value a broadcast’s life as a channel video, or a live-first community and its platform tools more.
- If you are unsure, run a small, consistent trial on one platform and assess the results using that platform’s own analytics. Do not treat a short trial as proof of universal platform performance.
Starting a YouTube Live stream
YouTube lists three routes: mobile, webcam, and encoder. For the general live-streaming guidance covered here, your channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The computer webcam route requires a computer with a webcam; it is not the only way to stream.
- Check account access. Confirm channel verification and that no live-stream restriction applies to your channel. Review the current instructions in YouTube live-streaming tips.
- Choose your route. Use mobile, a computer webcam, or an encoder according to your format and equipment. YouTube’s general guidance identifies these options but does not make one the best choice for every creator.
- Check the live dashboard. Follow the current prompts in YouTube Studio for your chosen route, including any account-specific availability or feature requirements.
- Plan for the broadcast afterward. Decide whether you want to make a replay or highlights available as channel videos, and check the stream’s settings and availability after it ends.
For a computer webcam stream, a webcam is required; YouTube also lists mobile and encoder routes, so buying a webcam is not a universal requirement.

Monetization: the programs are not equivalent
YouTube Partner Program and live features
The YouTube Partner Program page lists one eligibility route as 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Meeting a threshold is not acceptance: policy and account requirements apply, and YouTube reviews channels. The page also notes updates beginning February 1, 2027, so check the current YouTube Partner Program eligibility page and YouTube Studio before relying on thresholds, especially for future planning.

Twitch Affiliate
Twitch’s Affiliate FAQ lists these requirements: 25 followers, four hours streamed, four different stream days, and an average of three viewers on four stream days in the last 30 days. Affiliates must complete onboarding, and 2FA is required. Check Twitch’s Affiliate Program FAQ for the current requirements and onboarding steps.
Twitch documents subscriptions, Bits and Cheering, community tools, and ads for Affiliates. Its settings guide says Affiliates can earn up to 55% net ad revenue when running at least three minutes of ads per hour.
