How to choose between YouTube Live and Twitch
Start with the kind of stream you plan to make, where your likely viewers already spend time, and whether you want the livestream to live on as a channel video. There is no comparable evidence here establishing that one platform has greater reach, makes creators grow faster, or produces higher earnings.

Several ways to start streaming
YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder, and console routes to go live. An encoder setup is useful for gameplay, overlays, or connecting production equipment such as a camera, microphone, or preamp. A USB microphone is optional equipment, not a platform requirement. YouTube distinguishes horizontal and vertical live experiences. Vertical live streams may be discoverable in the Shorts feed, where mobile viewers use a full-screen, scrollable feed. The feature comparison also lists memberships and gifted memberships for both formats; horizontal streams include features such as clickable links in chat and the channel description, live pre-rolls and mid-rolls, 4K broadcast, premieres, and live redirect. Feature availability can change, so check YouTube’s current setup page for the options available to your channel.

Eligibility and replays
YouTube lists channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16 among its live-streaming requirements. After a stream ends, a channel can post the replay or highlights as a video. That can suit creators who want a live event to remain part of a video library; see YouTube’s replay guidance.
What Twitch offers
Twitch positions itself around live creators, community interaction, and tools for developing a regular audience. Its subscriptions let viewers support creators monthly and may include creator-defined subscriber benefits; Twitch describes subscriptions for Affiliates and Partners in Creator Camp.

One recent change matters to beginners: Twitch announced on May 13, 2026 that Bits, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Channel Points would be available to eligible streamers globally through Creator Dashboard onboarding. Access to those tools is not the same as being eligible for payout. Twitch says payout still requires Affiliate or Partner status. Read the Twitch monetization announcement for the distinction.
Monetization eligibility: compare thresholds, not promised earnings
Eligibility rules indicate which program features a creator may qualify for; they do not predict income. Actual results depend on factors such as audience, location, content, and viewers’ use of support features. The thresholds below are the criteria shown on the official help pages checked in 2026, and may change.

YouTube’s thresholds and features depend on region and program rules. Check YouTube’s current YPP eligibility page before planning around a particular feature. Twitch’s Affiliate criteria are in its Affiliate FAQ; Partner criteria are in its Partner overview.
YouTube fan funding has format and content limits
Eligible creators may use Super Chat and Super Stickers during livestreams and Premieres, subject to location, terms, and content restrictions. YouTube lists exclusions that include age-restricted, unlisted, private, and made-for-kids content, as well as streams with chat or comments turned off. See YouTube’s Supers eligibility rules.

- Compare your actual monetization path using the current criteria for your location and content. Thresholds alone do not establish which platform will earn you more.
- Check account eligibility before scheduling. In particular, confirm YouTube’s channel requirements and any program-specific conditions that apply to your intended features.
