A sound’s popularity—or its presence in Shorts—does not give you permission to download it for a regular video, a livestream, or use on another platform.
What music can I use?
You can use music you created, music in the YouTube Audio Library, tracks available to you through YouTube’s Shorts Audio Library in the Shorts creation tools, or music covered by a license whose terms permit your intended use. YouTube describes a license as “legal permission to use content that other people own the rights to.” A credit in your description, a “free” label, or a song trending on YouTube does not itself provide that permission. Even music described as free may be flagged by Content ID.

Before using a track, check the specific terms for the format, permitted duration, territory, channel, platform, monetization, and number of uses. Rights and availability can differ by track and country.
Using trending audio in a Short
Use the Shorts Audio Library from YouTube’s Shorts creation tools rather than adding a copyrighted song to the video file yourself. The library includes tracks from music partners with Shorts-specific agreements. Adding a song through the Shorts tools creates a special rights-holder claim for analytics; adding copyrighted audio outside those tools can instead expose the Short to standard claims or copyright removal requests. YouTube explains the Shorts music rules and the rights-holder guidance for Shorts audio.

- Keep the song within its displayed limit and publish the Short through the Shorts workflow.
For a three-minute Short, YouTube says most Shorts Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds, while some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. These are track-use limits, not a general copyright exception. The duration shown for the selected track is the one to follow. Music availability can vary with territory, rights clearance, ownership, and match policy. See YouTube’s Shorts guidance.
Can I use a Shorts sound in a regular YouTube video or livestream?
Do not assume that permission to use a song through Shorts covers other formats. Shorts Audio Library access is tied to the Shorts workflow and its applicable agreements. For a long-form video or livestream, use a source and license that explicitly cover that format.

Using YouTube Audio Library music
YouTube recommends the Audio Library for royalty-free music and sound effects. In YouTube Studio, open Audio Library, preview a track, and download it for use. YouTube says Audio Library royalty-free music will not receive a Content ID claim. This can be a practical choice when you need audio for content beyond Shorts or want to reuse a licensed track across multiple YouTube uploads. Check the terms attached to the particular item.

Creator Music is a separate catalog in YouTube Studio. Depending on the track, eligible creators may be able to use a no-cost license and retain full video monetization, or use a track under revenue-sharing terms. Read the track’s terms rather than treating the catalog as a single blanket license: supported regions, eligible formats, and permitted use vary.

YouTube Help says it began phasing out paid Creator Music licenses in August 2026. August 10, 2026 was the last day to purchase and use paid licenses. Previously applied paid licenses remain valid until they expire; purchased licenses that were not used by that deadline are refunded. Check the live catalog and the terms shown for a track before relying on paid-license availability. See YouTube’s Creator Music overview and its Creator Music FAQ.
Using music from another source
You can use your own music or music from a third-party site if you have the necessary rights for the exact use. Read the written license before downloading or publishing. Look for whether it covers YouTube, the specific channel, Shorts versus long-form versus livestreams, your country, monetization, repeat use, and any restrictions on editing or attribution. A license for one video may not cover another upload, and a license for YouTube may not cover other platforms.

Can I use trending audio on YouTube without a copyright claim?
There is no universal number of seconds that makes a copyrighted song safe to use, and a song being “trending” does not change its rights status. Use the track through the Shorts tools for a Short, or use a source whose terms cover your intended format and use. YouTube says even music labeled free can still be flagged by Content ID; a description credit or the absence of an immediate claim is not proof of permission. YouTube’s overview of copyright-safe music explains the available approaches.

A Content ID claim and a copyright strike are different. A claim may block a video, monetize it (sometimes with revenue sharing), or track its viewership; the outcome can vary by territory. A removal request is a separate process, and a valid copyright removal request results in a strike. A claim alone usually does not. YouTube describes these distinctions in its Content ID claim guidance.

Check the claim in YouTube Studio
Open the affected video’s copyright or restrictions details in YouTube Studio to see the claimant, matched material, and policy. Follow the options shown for that particular claim; availability depends on the case.
Choose a response that matches your rights
- Leave a valid claim in place: If you do not have the rights or do not want to alter the video, you can leave the claim as it is.
- Remove the claimed audio: Where Studio offers the option, mute or trim the claimed material, or replace it with YouTube Audio Library audio.
- Dispute only with a good-faith basis: Dispute if you believe the claim is wrong and you are confident you have the necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate disputes. An unsupported dispute may be followed by a removal request, which can result in a strike.
Note the Shorts rule change dated September 24, 2026
YouTube’s updated guidance says that, beginning September 24, 2026, new Shorts longer than one minute but shorter than three minutes with an active Content ID claim will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable. Older English Help wording still describes the earlier automatic-blocking rule, so check the live claim notice and the current Studio outcome. This change affects blocking behavior; it does not grant permission to use a track or guarantee that a Short will remain available. See YouTube’s guidance for Shorts over one minute, alongside its Shorts help page.
