How to Create a Pop-Up Streaming Channel with AWS

A practical guide to AWS pop-up live streaming: choose a source, provision MediaLive, connect MediaPackage and CloudFront, test playback, and clean up after the event.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a live event, the standard AWS delivery path is source → AWS Elemental MediaLive → AWS Elemental MediaPackage → Amazon CloudFront → viewer. MediaLive ingests and transcodes the contribution feed, MediaPackage packages it into playback formats, and CloudFront delivers the stream to players or a website. For an initial deployment, AWS’s MediaLive workflow wizard can provision a supported workflow; for a manually assembled route, create a MediaPackage v2 channel group, channel, and endpoint, then connect MediaLive and configure CloudFront.

Which AWS services do you need?

The services do separate jobs in the live-video pipeline:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Source: The camera, encoder, phone, webcam, or stored video that supplies the program. Its output must match an ingest path supported by the workflow you choose.
  • AWS Elemental MediaLive: Ingests the source and transcodes it into configured outputs. A MediaLive channel sends those outputs to the downstream destination you set up. AWS describes MediaLive’s role and workflow here.
  • AWS Elemental MediaPackage: Receives encoder output, packages it into streaming formats, and makes the content available through endpoints.
  • Amazon CloudFront: Acts as the CDN delivery layer. It can use MediaPackage as the origin for a live stream, serving content to viewers or a player embedded on your site. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS overview describes this pattern.

In the reference architecture, MediaPackage provides HLS, DASH, and CMAF output options for delivery through its endpoints and CloudFront. Choose formats according to the players and devices your audience actually uses; the architecture does not establish one format as universally best. See the reference architecture’s format and delivery details.

Choose your source and deployment route

Use the MediaLive workflow wizard for a supported, managed setup

The MediaLive workflow wizard is a lower-touch route when your source and desired workflow fit its supported options. AWS documents inputs including a MediaConnect flow, AWS Elemental Link, a mobile phone or webcam using RTMP, and an MP4 stored in S3 or on an HTTP server. The phone and webcam paths are input options, not a guarantee that a casual capture setup is appropriate for every production.

  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

The wizard can create a CloudFormation stack containing a MediaLive input and channel plus other resources needed by the selected workflow. Review the selected workflow’s supported inputs and outputs before deploying; the wizard is not a universal front end for every possible source or delivery design. AWS documents the MediaLive workflow wizard and its options.

Assemble the services manually when you need more control

A manual setup makes sense when you need to control the MediaPackage v2 resources and the way the encoder output reaches delivery. In MediaPackage v2, the resource sequence is channel group → channel → endpoint. The channel receives encoder output; the endpoint exposes packaged content for a player or CDN. AWS’s MediaPackage documentation explains the service and resource model.

How to get a live stream from MediaLive to CloudFront

  1. Confirm the contribution source and ingest path. Identify whether the event source is a live encoder/feed, a supported RTMP phone or webcam workflow, an Elemental Link device, a MediaConnect flow, or an MP4 on S3 or HTTP for a wizard workflow. Confirm the input option is available in the deployment route you select before provisioning resources.
  2. Create the MediaLive input and channel. With the wizard, select the matching documented workflow and allow it to create the CloudFormation resources. In a manual design, configure the input and channel for your source and set the channel’s downstream output to the destination required by your MediaPackage setup. MediaLive’s output destination is part of the channel configuration, so it must agree with the receiving service’s configuration.
  3. Create MediaPackage v2 resources if using the manual route. In the AWS Elemental MediaPackage console, create a channel group, create a channel inside it, and create an endpoint on that channel. Configure the encoder output to feed the channel, and choose the packaged format or formats required by the player mix.
  4. Configure CloudFront with MediaPackage as origin. Set the MediaPackage endpoint as the origin for the CloudFront distribution. In AWS’s reference solution, CloudFront-to-MediaPackage requests are authorized using a CDN identifier in a custom header. Configure authorization using the actual deployment’s supported mechanism; do not put a real secret in public code, a page, or an example. The AWS reference solution describes this origin authorization pattern.
  5. Point the player or event page at the delivery URL and test. Use the appropriate playback URL for the chosen endpoint and CloudFront configuration. Test on the actual browsers, devices, and players your viewers will use, including any HLS, DASH, or CMAF variants you have configured. Verify both the event page and playback path before the program begins.

Plan redundancy, access, and operations

Redundancy depends on the event’s risk tolerance

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution uses two feeds, with one MediaLive processing each feed, to provide a more resilient architecture. This is a reference pattern, not a mandatory setup for every pop-up channel. Decide whether the event warrants separate contribution feeds and processing paths; do not assume that deploying a single workflow wizard stack automatically provides the same two-feed design. See AWS’s documented reference design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the origin and inspect service activity

If you use CloudFront in front of MediaPackage, restrict origin requests according to the authorization design you deploy. The reference solution uses a CDN identifier in a custom header for requests from CloudFront to MediaPackage. AWS also describes service logs and CloudTrail observability in its solution architecture. Decide which logs and audit records you need to review for your event and configure them as part of the deployment rather than treating them as automatic proof of successful playback.

Test the end-to-end playback path

  • Confirm the source is reaching the configured MediaLive input and the channel is producing its intended output.
  • Confirm MediaPackage receives the output and that the selected endpoint exposes the expected format.
  • Confirm CloudFront can retrieve from the origin using the configured authorization and that the viewer-facing URL works in your player.
  • Check the stream on the devices and networks relevant to the audience; a working endpoint alone does not establish compatibility with every player.

Common setup problems and what to check

  • The workflow wizard does not accept your source: Its supported input set is limited to the documented workflow choices. Select a supported source path or design a manual pipeline around the source’s ingest method.
  • MediaLive output does not appear in MediaPackage: Check that the MediaLive channel’s destination matches the MediaPackage channel configuration and that the channel is sending output. The services must be connected by the configured output path; creating a MediaPackage endpoint alone does not connect the encoder.
  • The MediaPackage endpoint works but CloudFront playback fails: Check the origin endpoint and the CloudFront-to-MediaPackage authorization configuration. A missing or mismatched custom-header authorization setting can prevent the CDN from retrieving content in the reference pattern.
  • Some players cannot play the stream: Verify that the player supports the packaged format and that you are using the matching endpoint and playback URL. Test the actual audience device mix rather than assuming that one format works everywhere.
  • A single-feed design is not resilient enough: The AWS reference architecture uses two feeds and separate MediaLive processing paths. Evaluate that pattern when event continuity justifies the added deployment complexity.

Budgeting and cleanup for a temporary channel

The architecture alone does not determine an event’s AWS bill. Charges depend on the services, configuration, and usage, so estimate the planned deployment with current AWS pricing information and the AWS calculator before launch; no fixed event price follows from the reference design. After the event, stop or delete the resources you no longer need. AWS describes running its solution for an event and deleting the stack after the program; verify what resources your particular deployment created and clean them up accordingly. AWS’s solution overview covers the event lifecycle.
