Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a low-motion YouTube playlist, start with 1080p30 H.264 at 10 Mbps if your upload connection can sustain it; choose 720p30 at 6 Mbps when you need to reduce bandwidth use. These are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations, not settings tailored specifically to static visuals. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and leave upload headroom.
Recommended settings for a low-motion playlist
YouTube does not publish a special encoder preset for low-motion streams. Its recommendations are organized by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For a playlist whose visuals are mostly still, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; 60 fps is not necessary just because the video is live.

| Setting | 720p option | 1080p option |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 30 fps | 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps |
| Video codec | H.264 | H.264 |
| Recommended video bitrate | 6 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Dependable upload capacity with YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance | At least 7.2 Mbps for a single 6 Mbps stream | At least 12 Mbps for a single 10 Mbps stream |
The upload figures apply YouTube’s recommendation to leave 20% beyond the primary stream bitrate. If you configure a backup stream, account for its bitrate too. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers, so choose the ingest settings for reliable upload and the image detail you want to preserve; you cannot assume every viewer receives the same bitrate.
Choose between 720p30 and 1080p30
Use 720p30 when bandwidth is the constraint
At YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps H.264 bitrate, 720p30 is the lower-bandwidth option. It can suit simple visuals or static artwork when upload capacity is limited. Leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to your connection’s best-case speed.

Use 1080p30 when fine detail matters
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 is 10 Mbps. The extra resolution can help preserve small text, gradients, and detail in album art, provided the connection can sustain the stream with headroom. If the upload varies or stream health becomes unstable, move down to 720p30 rather than trying to push a bitrate the connection cannot reliably carry.
When 60 fps makes sense
For a static image or slowly changing playlist visual, 60 fps usually adds little. Consider it only when the source has movement that benefits from smoother motion and your upload and encoding capacity can support the higher frame-rate mode. YouTube’s published recommendations provide bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate, but do not set a playlist-specific rule.
Set the encoder and YouTube ingest options
- Pick a supported ingest protocol and codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. The settings above use H.264.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate. Choose 1280 × 720 at 30 fps or 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps, according to your connection and detail needs.
- Set rate control to CBR. Enter 6 Mbps for 720p30 H.264 or 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 as the starting bitrate.
- Set keyframes to every 2 seconds. Do not use an interval longer than 4 seconds.
- Choose a supported audio codec and check levels. AAC or MP3 is supported for the listed ingest protocols. Confirm that the audio is clear and does not clip, including at playlist transitions.
- Use your YouTube stream key carefully. In YouTube’s live control room, select or create the stream and copy its stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
The names and locations of encoder controls vary by software, so use the application’s output or streaming settings rather than relying on a universal menu path.

Check upload capacity and test before going live
- Measure upload speed, not just download speed. A speed-test peak does not prove the connection can hold the bitrate continuously.
- For one 10 Mbps stream, target at least 12 Mbps of dependable upload capacity; for one 6 Mbps stream, target at least 7.2 Mbps. Include any backup stream bitrate before applying the same 20% headroom guidance.
- Run a test with audio and movement representative of the actual stream. For a playlist, include track changes and visual transitions as a practical way to check what viewers will encounter.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and messages while testing and after going live. If warnings or instability appear, reduce the output bitrate or resolution and test again.
- Prefer a stable wired connection where available, and avoid saturating the connection with uploads or other heavy traffic during the stream.
YouTube advises testing before streaming with audio and video movement similar to the intended broadcast, and recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate: YouTube live encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.
Choose latency for the audience, not the still image
If viewers mainly listen and are not interacting with the channel in real time, normal latency is generally the simpler choice. Lower latency can increase buffering, and it matters less when immediate audience interaction is not part of the stream. YouTube also offers DVR so viewers can pause and rewind where that option is available. See YouTube’s latency and DVR guidance.
Confirm music and other content rights before streaming
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content, it may show a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license by itself may not prevent interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check the details in YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

YouTube’s live-stream terms require content providers to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights: YouTube Terms of Service. Verify that any permission covers live streaming and the territories where the stream will be available. A general “free music” label does not establish that permission.
YouTube says Creator Music tracks may be used only in long-form videos, not live streams. Its copyright-safe music guidance points to music in the public domain and music used with permission from the copyright owner; check the specific track’s terms and rights before broadcasting. YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames
Likely cause: The connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, or competing traffic is using upload bandwidth. Fix: Check upload capacity, restore headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution—for example, move from 1080p30 at 10 Mbps to 720p30 at 6 Mbps. Test the revised settings before relying on them.

The stream looks soft despite a stable connection
Likely cause: The selected resolution or bitrate is too low for the detail in the artwork or text, or the viewer is watching a lower transcoded quality. Fix: Check the stream’s output settings and viewer quality selection. If upload capacity allows, test 1080p30 at YouTube’s 10 Mbps H.264 recommendation.
Audio cuts out or becomes distorted at transitions
Likely cause: A playlist file, transition, or audio-level change was not covered by the test. Fix: Test representative track changes, verify the selected audio codec is supported, and adjust levels to avoid clipping.

A licensed track triggers a warning or interruption
Likely cause: YouTube’s live scanning identified third-party material, or the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Fix: Stop or replace the affected content, confirm that the license explicitly covers live streaming and relevant territories, and ask the rights owner about allowlisting. Do not assume that a general license or a “free” label is sufficient.
