To detect visual changes, compare fresh browser screenshots of important pages with reviewed baseline screenshots captured under the same conditions. A screenshot by itself only shows the current page; a comparison reveals what changed. Review each difference before deciding whether it is an intended update, a layout regression, or harmless rendering noise.
Choose the pages and states that matter
Start with a small set of public pages that prospective students and parents rely on. A representative set is easier to maintain than trying to monitor every URL.

Decide which visitor contexts matter. If students commonly use phones as well as computers, capture mobile and desktop viewport sizes. Keep a record of each page, viewport, and meaningful state you intend to check—for example, whether a menu is open or a particular tab is selected.

Playwright Test for developer-owned sites
If your team already runs browser tests, Playwright Test can keep visual checks alongside the rest of the test suite. Its toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares a new capture with a reference image. This approach gives a team control over when checks run, page state, and how visual changes are reviewed, but it requires maintaining browser tests and their execution environment.
Hosted monitoring for recurring production captures
A hosted service may suit teams that want scheduled captures without first building a browser-test suite. For example, VisualRunner describes scheduled captures, selected languages and devices, responsive review, and visual-change comparisons on its product page. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent assessment. Before choosing a service, check its capture contexts, comparison history, alert routing, masking and tolerance controls, review process, and handling of screenshots and credentials.

Make captures repeatable
Small differences in the capture setup can create noise that looks like a site change. Playwright warns that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode.” See its visual comparison guidance and page assertion options.

- Run comparisons with a consistent operating system, browser version, viewport, and browser settings.
- Use the same route and page state each time. Make sure the page has loaded and important assets have settled before capturing.
- Identify known dynamic content, such as a rotating promotion, timestamp, or chat widget. Mask it or filter it only when it is irrelevant to the question you are checking.
- Keep locale and other environment settings consistent where they affect the displayed page.
For private test flows, use synthetic data rather than recording real student personal information. Monitor pages and states you control or are authorized to assess.

Set up a Playwright screenshot assertion
The following JavaScript example uses Playwright Test. Save it as tests/site-visual.spec.js in a project with Playwright Test installed, replacing the example URL with a page you are authorized to monitor.

});Run the test with npx playwright test. On its initial execution, Playwright creates a reference screenshot. Review that image before treating it as the approved baseline; subsequent executions compare new captures with it. The configured maxDiffPixels allows a limited number of differing pixels. Tune tolerance cautiously: a value that is too strict can flag trivial rendering noise, while one that is too loose can hide meaningful changes. For other pages or visitor contexts, create separate assertions with clear names, such as admissions mobile or fees desktop. Keep the browser and host environment stable across baseline creation and later runs; otherwise a mismatch may reflect the environment rather than a website update.

Review differences and update baselines deliberately
- When an assertion fails, inspect the diff image and both full screenshots—not just the highlighted pixels.
- Classify the change: intended content or design update, unintended layout regression, or capture/rendering noise.
- If it is a regression, fix the page and rerun the comparison against the existing baseline.
- If a human confirms the new appearance is intentional, update the reference screenshot and review the resulting change before merging it.
Do not update snapshots automatically whenever a test fails. That replaces the reference without establishing that the new page is correct.

Indian government website guidance discusses monitoring plans and consistent user experience for government websites and apps. CERT-In also publishes website policies that include privacy and monitoring policies. These sources describe public-sector context; they do not establish that a private coaching institute must follow the same requirements. Check the rules that apply to your own organisation rather than treating government guidance as a legal requirement for a private site.
