YouTube recommends Normal for non-interactive streams; it gives viewers the lowest buffering among the latency options. Choose Low only when delivering score updates sooner matters more than playback stability, and Ultra-low when real-time conversation is central to the show.
Which latency setting should a nonstop score stream use?
For an always-on scoreboard, the key question is whether viewers need to respond to you in real time. A continuously running stream does not, by itself, need low latency. If viewers mostly watch the score, prioritize a stable picture and choose Normal. YouTube describes Normal as the best fit for non-interactive streams and says it supports all resolutions and live features. YouTube’s latency guidance

Use Low if a shorter delay for score changes is important and you accept a greater chance of buffering. Use Ultra-low for a format built around live conversation, such as hosts responding to chat as events happen—not merely because the channel stays online around the clock.

Normal, Low and Ultra-low compared
| Mode | Best fit | Typical latency | What matters for a cricket score channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams | No numeric figure stated in YouTube’s cited guidance | Lowest buffering among the options; supports all resolutions and live features. Best starting point for a scoreboard where stable playback matters more than immediate interaction. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls that do not require waiting for replies | Most viewers experience under 10 seconds, according to YouTube; this is typical, not guaranteed | Can get score changes to viewers sooner than Normal, but reduced buffer headroom can mean more buffering. Does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Highly interactive streams with real-time audience engagement | Most viewers experience under five seconds, according to YouTube; this is typical, not guaranteed | Useful when hosts need to react to chat in real time. More sensitive to ingest problems and more likely to buffer. Does not support 4K. |
These figures describe typical viewer experiences in YouTube Help, not a guarantee of end-to-end delay. Network congestion and the path from encoder to player can add delay even when average upload capacity appears sufficient. YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency

Set latency in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then open Stream settings in the Live Control Room.
- For an encoder-based stream, select a mode under Stream latency. Webcam and mobile streams are configured for interactivity, so YouTube does not show the same manual latency selection for them.
- Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder to values your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s encoder workflow lets you specify these values and automatically transcodes the stream for different viewer devices and network conditions. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Before going live, test with representative movement and audio. During the stream, monitor stream health and investigate warnings; average bitrate alone does not establish that viewers are receiving a stable picture.
- If you use HLS ingestion, note that YouTube turns off Ultra-low latency for HLS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. YouTube Help: HLS ingestion
Choose based on the channel’s actual format
Scoreboard with no live host interaction
Choose Normal. A faster score update may be desirable, but for a channel whose value is continuous availability, buffering interruptions can be more damaging than a few seconds of extra delay.
Score updates plus occasional polls
Consider Low if viewers need updates sooner and polls do not depend on rapid back-and-forth. Test it under the connection and encoder conditions used for the real stream.

- Keep track of your Cricket and 01 dart games in style
- Designed with a smooth surface that's compatible with all dry erase markers
- Includes 1 dry erase marker with eraser tip
- Mounting hardware is included, allowing for easy installation
- Measuring 15.375" H x 7.875" W, it's designed to fit on your wood cabinet or wall
Live host responding to chat
Ultra-low may make sense when the host and audience need to exchange comments in near real time. Expect less buffering headroom, and remember it is unavailable with HLS ingestion and does not support 4K.

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind and resume a live stream, but it may be limited or unavailable when a stream runs longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek back to a point before the channel went live. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast, though a recording of the full stream may be available after it ends. Decide whether your audience values rewind more than staying near the live edge, then check how DVR behaves on the channel’s stream duration and playback devices.
