Streaming a recorded video does not, by itself, invalidate a YouTube Live stream key. First copy the key for the intended stream from YouTube Studio and confirm the encoder is using the matching server URL and supported protocol. If the error is actually an SSL, timeout, or connection message, changing the key may not help.
First, check the key and destination
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the intended stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream key shown for that stream and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. Make sure the encoder is set to use a stream key rather than a separate YouTube sign-in or integration workflow.
- Check the encoder’s server or stream URL separately. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream credential. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions treat them as distinct settings.
- If the saved key may be old or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the saved value in the encoder. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
A reset key is useful only after the encoder has been updated with the replacement. Avoid sharing a stream key: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream.

Use the error to identify the failure
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication or invalid-key message | Key mismatch, wrong stream selected, or stale saved key | Copy the key from the intended stream in Live Control Room. If necessary, reset it and update the encoder. |
| SSL certificate error or timeout | Server URL or protocol compatibility | Confirm the URL and protocol match. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and an encoder that supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes port 443 as a possible step for certain SSL errors. |
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Encoder output, destination, or outbound connection | Check the encoder’s status and error log, verify the URL and key, and test the internet connection from the computer running the encoder. |
| The encoder signs in to YouTube instead of asking for a key | Software-to-YouTube authentication integration | Follow the encoder provider’s support steps for its sign-in integration; key-field instructions may not apply to that workflow. |
| YouTube reports that live streaming is restricted | Channel eligibility or restriction, not necessarily the key | Check the channel notice and YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance. YouTube says a restricted channel cannot work around the restriction by streaming from another channel. |
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the key from Live Control Room into the third-party encoder when it reports an error starting. Record the exact message before changing several settings at once; a key error and a connection failure point to different checks.

What changes when the source is a recording?
The recording is the encoder’s input; the stream key remains a YouTube stream setting. Confirm that the software is sending the file as a live encoder feed, not uploading it as a video or using a separate platform integration. File playback behavior differs across encoder applications, so the exact steps depend on the software and version.

If you scheduled the stream, start the encoder first and wait for its preview in Live Control Room. Then select Go live when ready. For a stream that should not go public until you approve it, do not assume that a successful encoder connection automatically publishes the scheduled event. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes the preview-and-go-live sequence.
When to check encoder settings
Resolution and bitrate are not the first fixes for an invalid-key message. Check them if the encoder connects but the preview is missing, unstable, or reporting a format problem. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, along with H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options; support depends on the encoder and stream setup.

- For RTMP-based settings, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose settings the encoder and source can actually sustain.
- Do not switch to HLS as a generic key-rejection fix. YouTube supports HLS for some use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but it requires an HLS-configured stream key and compatible encoder. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. See HLS setup guidance.
Test before retrying an important stream
After correcting the destination or key, start the encoder and check that the expected video and audio appear in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health; see its streaming tips and live streaming tips. If it still fails, note the exact error wording, encoder name and version, whether the event is scheduled or reused, selected protocol, and any channel restriction notice. Those details help distinguish an authentication problem from an encoder or network issue.
