Neither OBS Studio nor FFmpeg has an established purchase cost in the evidence available for this comparison, so that alone does not make one cheaper. For an Indian creator using a PC they already own, the bigger costs are usually electricity, internet service, any hardware upgrade, and time spent setting up and managing the stream. Those costs depend on your equipment, connection, tariffs, and streaming schedule—not just the software.
What each tool does—and what that means for cost
| Tool | Documented role | Likely fit | Cost conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Video capture, compositing, encoding, recording, and streaming software. The OBS Project distributes it under the GNU GPL v2 or later. OBS Studio | A useful fit when you want an application interface for managing scenes and stream controls. | No purchase cost is established here. A free software license does not mean the overall setup has no cost. |
| FFmpeg | A command-line multimedia tool for reading inputs, processing and filtering media, transcoding, and outputting streams. FFmpeg Documentation | A possible fit for technically confident users who want to automate a repeatable command-line pipeline. | No purchase price is established here. The official documentation cited describes the tool and its commands, not a verified current license statement. |
The setup-time distinction is a workflow inference, not a measured comparison: OBS’s application interface may be less work for scene-based streaming, while FFmpeg’s command-line approach may suit a user comfortable building and maintaining commands. Your familiarity with each tool can change which takes less time.

Where the real cost of home-PC streaming comes from
Electricity
The PC must remain on while it streams, but the available documentation does not show that either OBS or FFmpeg uses less electricity on the same computer under the same conditions. Actual power cost depends on the PC and workload, including the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and—for OBS—scene complexity. Measure your own setup rather than treating one program as an electricity-saving choice.
Broadband and upload capacity
YouTube recommends matching stream quality to the available connection, testing upload bitrate, and checking stream health. Its current encoder guidance gives 2–6 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. That is a streaming bitrate recommendation, not a monthly broadband price or a rupee estimate: your plan’s billing and data terms determine your internet cost. PC capability and upgrades
Having a computer that meets basic requirements does not guarantee it can stream your chosen workload smoothly. OBS says CPU needs vary considerably with the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The OBS Project’s system-requirements page is dated 2021-08-25; use it as a compatibility reference, not a guarantee of performance for every current workload. OBS Studio System Requirements
Your time
Account for setup, monitoring, troubleshooting, and recovering a stream if it stops. How much that time is worth is personal; there is no measured time or cost comparison here that establishes a universal winner.

Compare OBS and FFmpeg fairly
- Use the same PC and connection. A test on different hardware or networks cannot isolate a software difference.
- Keep the stream target the same. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in both setups; otherwise you are changing more than one variable.
- Test representative content. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then checking stream health.
- Record your actual costs. Use your broadband plan, streaming hours, and electricity tariff. India-wide rupee totals cannot be responsibly stated without those details and the PC’s power use.
YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). It recommends RTMPS. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP sent through an SSL connection. These are YouTube encoder settings, not evidence that one of the two software tools is cheaper. Which should you choose?
- Choose OBS if you want an application interface for capturing and arranging scenes, recording, encoding, and streaming, and you are comfortable checking your PC’s performance against your planned workload.
- Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable with command-line tools and want to process inputs and automate a repeatable streaming pipeline.
- Choose by total cost, not software price alone. If you already own a capable PC, neither tool has an established paid software price in this comparison; electricity, broadband, hardware needs, and setup time are the remaining variables.
