To loop prerecorded video on YouTube Live, play it through an encoder such as OBS Studio and enable looping on the source. For one file, use an OBS Media Source with Loop checked; for a sequence, use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled. That repeats playback, but does not smooth a bad edit: the end and beginning of the video and audio must fit together if you want the repeat to look and sound seamless.
Make the file seamless before you stream it
A loop setting restarts the media; it does not alter the file or blend its last frame into its first. Before opening OBS, play the end and beginning back-to-back. Check both picture and sound for a jump, flash, pause, silence, click, or abrupt change in music or ambience. If you hear or see a break, fix the edit in a video or audio editor, then export and test the revised file again. OBS documents playback restart behavior, not automatic transition repair. OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes the source controls; YouTube also recommends testing representative audio and movement before a stream. YouTube’s streaming tips

Set up a single-video loop in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will contain the video.
- Add the file. In the Sources area, select + → Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the local video file. OBS lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. OBS Project — Media Sources
- Enable repeat playback. In the Media Source properties, check Loop. Confirm the video and audio play correctly in the OBS preview, including after the file reaches its end.
- Fit the picture if needed. If the source does not fill the canvas as intended, use OBS’s source transform controls to position and scale it. Avoid stretching the image out of its original aspect ratio.
Loop a playlist instead of one file
For multiple videos played in sequence, add a VLC Video source rather than a Media Source. OBS requires VLC installed for this source; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Add the files in the desired order and enable Loop Playlist in the source properties. Check the playlist order, each clip’s audio and picture, and the transition from the final item back to the first. OBS says the playlist source restarts when it runs out of files. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select the stream in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the Control Room. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the applicable custom service option, and enter the server URL and key as required by the selected service setup.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with it may be able to send an encoder feed to your stream.
- Start streaming from OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. A scheduled stream may require you to verify its preview and click Go live in the Control Room before viewers can watch.
See YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the current Live Control Room flow and stream configuration details.

Choose output settings and check your connection
Match OBS’s output resolution and frame rate to the source video and what your computer can encode reliably. Use YouTube’s settings guidance to choose a bitrate for the specific resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Make sure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate throughout the stream. YouTube’s network tips recommend 20% upload headroom over the stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips
- Before broadcasting publicly, run a private or unlisted test. Watch the YouTube preview for video, audio, motion, and stream-health warnings.
- Leave the test running long enough to observe at least one complete repeat. Inspect the end-to-start boundary in the YouTube playback, not only in the OBS preview.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event; a good local preview does not prove the upload path is stable.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” YouTube Help — Copyright issues with live streams A live stream can be interrupted for a match. Having a licence does not necessarily prevent that interruption: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm your rights and any allowlisting requirements before streaming music or other third-party material.

Stop the stream and understand the archive
When the broadcast is finished, end it deliberately in YouTube and stop the OBS encoder feed. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; if archive availability or length matters, check YouTube’s current help information for your stream before relying on that archive. Common loop and stream problems
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The video jumps, flashes, or pauses when it repeats | The source’s last and first frames do not join cleanly; the loop option only restarts playback. | Edit the boundary, export again, and test the end-to-start transition before going live. |
| There is a click, silence, or sudden audio change at the repeat | The audio tail and start do not match, or the edit cuts a sound abruptly. | Repair the audio boundary in an editor and listen to repeated transitions at normal playback level. |
| The playlist source is missing or will not load | VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC and use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, then reopen or recreate the VLC Video source. |
| YouTube shows no preview or receives no encoder feed | The server URL or stream key may be wrong, the encoder may not be sending, or the stream may not have been started in the Control Room. | Check OBS’s stream settings and encoder status, confirm the selected stream in YouTube, and follow the Control Room prompt to go live if required. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | The upload path may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the computer may be struggling to encode. | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, test the connection, leave the recommended upload headroom, and choose settings supported by the source and machine. |
| The live stream is interrupted after copyrighted material appears | YouTube detected third-party content; a licence may not have been paired with channel allowlisting. | Use content you have permission to stream and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. |
Choose the right way to keep the loop running
| Method | Best fit | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with Loop | One local video file | Simple setup, but the computer, encoder, and connection must keep sending the feed. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Several files played in sequence | Supports a playlist; VLC must be installed and the sequence and boundaries need checking. |
| Cloud 24/7 streaming service | Long-running playback without leaving a local encoder computer on | Moves playout off the home computer; check the particular service’s current terms and capabilities. |
