Those are live-ingest figures, not file-upload settings. On a slow or variable connection, check your real upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower the resolution if 720p cannot be carried reliably.
Choose the 720p live bitrate for your encoder
A pre-recorded video becomes a live stream when an encoder sends it to YouTube’s live ingest. Use the live encoder table for that workflow. YouTube’s published values below were checked on October 3, 2026; the help page does not state a publication or revision date.

These are YouTube’s published encoder values, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable or that two codecs will deliver equal visual quality at their respective recommendations. The listed minimum is not a stability promise. If your connection is marginal, 30 fps can be a less demanding production choice than 60 fps, but YouTube’s table lists the same bitrate values for both.

Check upload capacity and leave headroom
The relevant speed is outbound upload, not download. YouTube says the total bitrate being streamed cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity free. In practical terms, a stream at a total bitrate of 8 Mbps calls for about 10 Mbps of reliably available upload capacity under that guidance; 6 Mbps calls for about 7.5 Mbps. Treat these as planning calculations, not guarantees: other devices, network congestion, and fluctuations can reduce what your encoder actually gets.
- Run an upload speed test while the network is being used in conditions representative of your event, rather than relying only on a best-case result.
- Account for all concurrent outbound traffic, including other streams or backup feeds. The usable capacity for your encoder is what remains after that traffic.
- Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain with the recommended headroom. If it cannot support the selected resolution reliably, lower the resolution instead of assuming the minimum bitrate will solve the problem.
- Test the actual encoder output before the event and watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs.
YouTube’s general network guidance is at Streaming tips. A single speed test cannot establish that a connection will stay stable throughout a live session.

Set the encoder and YouTube live event
For a relay of an existing video, configure the encoder that sends the file’s playback to YouTube—not the file’s upload or export settings. YouTube’s general live guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For 30 fps, a two-second keyframe interval is 60 frames.

In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and select the encoder workflow. YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder explains the platform-side setup.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a password: do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Set video output. Choose 1280 × 720, your intended frame rate (30 fps is a sensible starting point on a constrained connection), the applicable codec bitrate from YouTube’s live table, and CBR. Use RTMPS where your encoder offers it.
- Set keyframes and audio. Set keyframes to every two seconds, staying at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum. Choose AAC or MP3 audio and ensure the audio bitrate is included when judging total network use.
- Start a test transmission. Use audio and movement representative of the actual video. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal, check stream health and messages, and verify playback before relying on the setup for an event.
Exact control names differ by encoder, so use the labels in your software for bitrate mode, keyframe interval, codec, and destination. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists its general requirements; its live streaming error messages page covers settings-related errors.

When 720p will not hold: reduce resolution
If YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth, unstable ingest, or a stream that repeatedly buffers, first check whether actual upload capacity is being consumed by other traffic. If the connection still cannot carry the chosen output, reduce the resolution and test again. YouTube’s live table also lists 480p/30 and 360p/30 options; their bitrate recommendations depend on codec, so select the corresponding values in the table rather than applying the 720p figures to a lower resolution.
Reducing resolution is a more direct response to insufficient upstream capacity than buying a camera, capture card, or dedicated encoder. Those devices do not create upload bandwidth. A wired connection may help if the problem is unreliable Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix inadequate upstream service.

Do not confuse live bitrate with video upload bitrate
If you upload the pre-recorded file as a normal YouTube video, rather than play it through an encoder into a live event, a different YouTube guide applies. For 720p SDR uploads, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps).
