If your FFmpeg video reaches YouTube Live but its audio is missing, trace the signal in order: verify audio exists at the input, confirm FFmpeg selects and maps it, remove any audio-disabling option, then check the outgoing codec and YouTube’s stream-health message. Adding -c:a aac cannot create audio that the input does not contain.
1. Confirm FFmpeg receives an audio stream
Start with the source, before changing encoding settings. Inspect FFmpeg’s input information and startup logs for an audio stream. For a media file, verify the file contains audio; for a capture setup, verify the intended audio device is included and producing a signal.

- No audio stream at the input: correct the source file, capture device, or input configuration. An output codec option cannot restore audio FFmpeg never received.
- An audio stream is present: continue to stream selection and output options.
YouTube’s noAudioStream health message means the ingested stream has no audio, although it does not identify whether the cause is a silent source, wrong device, or later omission. YouTube says the ingest must contain exactly one audio stream. YouTube Live health-status documentation
2. Check which streams FFmpeg sends
FFmpeg may select streams automatically, or you can control selection with -map. With explicit mapping, only the mapped streams are included in that output, subject to FFmpeg’s documented filtergraph exception. If your command uses multiple inputs, ensure the audio mapping refers to the intended input and stream.

-anin the output options. It disables audio recording, including automatic selection or mapping. - Review every
-mapentry. A video mapping without a corresponding audio mapping can produce video-only output. - Check which input index supplies the audio when combining files or devices.
- If relying on automatic selection, do not assume FFmpeg chose the intended source. FFmpeg selects one available audio stream; its documented criterion is the stream with the most channels.
- Inspect option placement and scope: many FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output file.
Use the actual output stream information to confirm that the encoded output contains one audio stream. FFmpeg documents -map and -an in its stream-selection guide.
3. Match audio encoding to the YouTube ingest protocol
Identify whether the YouTube ingest is RTMP/RTMPS or HLS before choosing audio settings. Recommendations and supported codecs differ by protocol; do not apply RTMP assumptions to an HLS setup.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular command is configured correctly. For RTMP/RTMPS, consult the current YouTube encoder settings and confirm the resulting stream and health status.

FFmpeg includes a native AAC encoder. Its documentation identifies it as the default AAC encoder and gives a default bitrate of 128 kbps when no bitrate is specified. That can be a starting point for stereo, but verify the actual output rather than relying on defaults. FFmpeg AAC encoder documentation

4. Use YouTube’s exact health message to narrow the cause
Open the stream’s health diagnostics in YouTube Live Control Room and address the named audio issue rather than changing unrelated video settings.
noAudioStream: no audio reached ingest; the stream must contain exactly one audio stream.multipleAudioStreams: more than one audio stream reached ingest.audioCodec: the audio codec is unsupported for the selected ingest.- Audio bitrate, sample-rate, or channel-count messages: adjust the corresponding output parameter to match YouTube’s guidance.
- A primary/backup audio mismatch: check that both streams use compatible audio configuration.
YouTube lists these issues and their meanings in its health-status reference. The message confirms what YouTube detects at ingest; it may not reveal which earlier stage dropped or altered the signal.

5. If you selected HLS, validate its delivery requirements
For HLS, check the transport and playlist as well as the audio codec. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for:

- TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds.
- A rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- HTTPS POST/PUT delivery.
- No byte ranges.
See YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup guidance for the current protocol-specific requirements. HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP, so first confirm that HLS is the intended ingest rather than troubleshooting with the wrong protocol assumptions.

6. Test the complete audio path before the event
YouTube recommends a pre-event test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, followed by monitoring stream health and messages during the event. A controlled test stream is a practical way to validate the full chain: source, FFmpeg selection, encoding, transport, and YouTube ingest.
Quick verification checklist
- FFmpeg input information shows the intended audio source.
- The output mapping includes that source, and
-anis absent. - The output contains exactly one audio stream with a codec supported by the selected protocol.
- YouTube Live Control Room reports no unresolved audio health issue during the test.
- Audio is audible in the resulting live stream, not merely present in FFmpeg’s input logs.
