YouTube Live Stream Goes Offline When Your Computer Sleeps: Windows Power Settings

A computer-based YouTube encoder needs Windows to stay awake. Set the correct plugged-in or battery sleep timeout, while allowing the screen to turn off separately.

If a YouTube live stream is being sent from an encoder on your Windows PC, the PC needs to stay awake for the encoder to keep sending video. Set the sleep timeout to Never or longer than the broadcast for the power condition you’ll use. You can still let the screen turn off: display timeout and sleep timeout are separate settings.

Why a sleeping computer stops the stream

Your encoder runs on the computer and sends the video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key configured in the encoder. When Windows puts that computer to sleep, do not expect the encoder to keep sending its live feed. This applies to a computer-based encoder workflow; a stream produced by a remote service has a different host.

Screen-off is not the same as sleep. Turning off the display can save power while leaving Windows running. Sleep suspends normal operation. Microsoft describes system sleep as depending on several criteria, including user or application activity and the power preferences set in Windows.

Keep a Windows 11 PC awake while streaming

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
  2. Under the power condition you will use, such as When plugged in, find Make my device sleep after. Set it to Never or choose a duration longer than the planned broadcast.
  3. If you might stream on battery, set the sleep timeout for the battery condition separately. Windows provides distinct controls for plugged-in and battery use.
  4. Set Turn my screen off after to your preferred interval. This controls the display, not whether the PC sleeps.
  5. Start a short broadcast and check that the PC remains awake and the stream stays connected before relying on the setup for a longer session.

The appropriate setting is the one for the power state the computer will actually be in. Changing only the plugged-in value does not necessarily keep a laptop awake when it is running on battery, or vice versa.

Windows 10: where to find the sleep timeout

On Windows 10, the screen and sleep controls commonly appear at Settings > System > Power & sleep. Labels can vary by build and device. Check both the plugged-in and battery options, as applicable. If closing the lid or pressing the power button triggers sleep, open Additional power settings and inspect the lid and button actions.

Check laptop lid and power-button actions

A timeout is not the only way a laptop can sleep. Many laptops and tablets are configured to sleep when the lid is closed or the power button is pressed. If you plan to close the lid during a broadcast, check what that action does in your power settings first. Do not assume that extending the idle sleep timeout overrides the lid action.

Sleep timeout examples are not universal recommendations

Microsoft’s Windows 11 support article describes default sleep timeout changes for particular device categories. The figures below are examples from that article, not universal Windows settings and not recommended streaming durations. The page does not state a publication year.

Your own available controls and defaults can differ by Windows version and device. For streaming, choose a timeout long enough for your broadcast rather than relying on a default.

If the stream still disconnects while the PC stays awake

Once you have confirmed that Windows is not sleeping, look at the connection between the encoder and YouTube rather than continuing to change sleep settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the server URL, stream key, and encoder configuration. Its encoder recommendations include RTMPS.

  • Confirm the computer is awake. Check whether Windows has slept, including after a lid-close or power-button action.
  • Check the network separately. If the PC remains awake but the stream drops, investigate network stability and the encoder’s connection status.
  • Consider Wi-Fi power behavior only when relevant. Microsoft documents Wi-Fi disconnection options in some Windows configurations. These do not prevent the computer itself from sleeping; diagnose Wi-Fi disconnection and system sleep as separate issues.
  • Review the encoder’s YouTube connection details. Verify its server URL and stream key against YouTube’s current live setup.

Why Away mode is not the general fix

Microsoft describes Away mode for cases where media applications need to continue background work while the computer appears asleep. It is not a general-purpose way to keep any encoder streaming, and Microsoft cautions against using it when it is not needed, particularly on portable computers. For a normal computer-based broadcast, set the sleep timeout so the PC stays awake instead.
