First find out where the wrong video appears. If the outgoing live feed itself shows the wrong clip, check the encoder’s active source or playlist. If the feed is correct and only a viewer sees the wrong video or position after pausing, check the YouTube event page and DVR playback instead. These are separate parts of the stream, so changing a stream key is not a good first fix.
Identify where the wrong video first appears
Use this quick distinction before changing settings:

- Live Control Room preview or the stream archive shows the wrong clip: the issue is likely in the encoder’s selected scene, media source, or playlist.
- The outgoing feed is correct, but a viewer resumes at an unexpected point or sees a different video: check the event or watch page, the viewer’s app or device, and YouTube’s DVR behavior.
- The problem begins after a reconnect, scene change, or playlist transition: note that timing; it can point you toward a source activation or playlist setting.
A YouTube stream key identifies where an encoder sends its feed; it does not choose which prerecorded file the encoder plays. YouTube describes stream keys in its live-stream settings documentation, while the video source is selected in the encoder.

Check the YouTube event and viewer playback
Confirm the intended event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and verify that you selected the intended scheduled event or live stream.
- Check that the viewer is on that event’s watch page, rather than a different stream or an older video with a similar title.
- Preview the outgoing feed in Live Control Room. If it shows the intended clip, continue with the viewer-side checks below.
Consider DVR and resume behavior
YouTube says viewers resuming a live stream with DVR continue from where they paused. Rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; YouTube also notes lower limits on Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the live stream began. See YouTube’s live-stream DVR guidance.

If the correct live feed is playing but the viewer returns to an unexpected point, refresh the watch page or feed and compare playback in another supported app or device. For a regular uploaded video, YouTube generally resumes partially watched videos, but a video near completion may not resume; clearing watch history also clears progress bars. Those regular-video rules are distinct from live DVR.
Inspect the encoder’s source or playlist
OBS Media Source
- In OBS, open the scene currently being sent to YouTube and select its Media Source.
- Check the file assigned to that source and confirm it is the intended recording. If the wrong clip appears, verify the active scene and file path before changing YouTube settings.
- Review Restart playback when source becomes active. If enabled, activating the source can restart its playback; decide whether that is intended for your scene changes.
- Check whether Loop is set as intended for the show.
OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide. A source restarting from its beginning would explain a changed playback position, but it would not by itself explain a different file; check the source assignment and active scene for that.

OBS VLC Video playlist
- Open the VLC Video source’s playlist and verify the files and their order.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist if clips must play in a fixed order.
- Check Loop Playlist and the source’s visibility behavior to ensure they match the intended schedule.
- Confirm VLC is installed; OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and requires it.
OBS describes the VLC source settings in the same Media Sources guide.
Preview the feed and compare the archive
- Before the next public broadcast, preview the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and verify both video and audio.
- After a test, inspect the local recording or archive, if available.
- Compare what the encoder sent with what the viewer experienced. If the archive contains the wrong clip, the error was already present in the encoder output. If the archive and preview are right but one viewer reports a different video or resume point, focus on the event page, player, and DVR.
This comparison is a diagnostic inference: YouTube recommends previewing the stream and checking archives as part of setup and troubleshooting. Its guidance is available in YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting help and stream setup guidance.

If it happens after an encoder reconnect
A reconnect can expose a source-selection or playback issue, but it does not establish one cause by itself. Check the encoder’s feed and logs, confirm you are using a current encoder version, and review CPU load and the local archive. If the encoder output looks healthy but transmission is not, check outbound connectivity. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these broader checks. If software connects to YouTube without a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team.
Do not reset the stream key just because the wrong prerecorded clip is playing. First verify the selected event and encoder source: the key controls the destination, while the source or playlist controls the media.
