For OBS, set Windows to launch OBS after startup and add OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter. Then test a real reboot and confirm the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s auto-start option does not launch OBS after Windows restarts.
Why does a 24/7 YouTube stream go offline when Windows restarts?
A Windows restart ends programs running on that PC. If OBS is sending the video, OBS must start again and reconnect before YouTube can receive the stream. YouTube describes an encoder as the software or hardware that sends content to YouTube; stopping the encoder’s feed ends the stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

There are two separate jobs: Windows must launch OBS, and OBS must start streaming. YouTube’s auto-start setting can allow streaming to begin from the encoder, but it does not restart an encoder process Windows has stopped. The direct fix below is for OBS; another encoder may use different startup settings and command-line options.
Set OBS to start streaming after Windows starts
1. Check OBS and YouTube before automating
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Confirm the intended stream and stream key. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed; keep it private. YouTube explains stream setup in its encoder instructions.
- Open OBS and confirm its YouTube service and stream settings, scene, profile, and media sources are the ones you want to run unattended.
- Start a short test stream and check the YouTube preview and stream health before relying on the setup. OBS recommends testing the configuration before going live; see the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube’s streaming tips.
2. Add OBS’s automatic-start parameter
OBS Project documents --startstreaming as the launch parameter for automatically starting a stream. Add it to the command Windows uses to launch OBS. OBS also says that for an automated or scheduled Windows launch, the working directory (“Start in”) should be the folder containing obs64.exe. The exact executable path varies by installation; do not assume one path fits every PC. See the OBS Launch Parameters page.

If you use Windows Task Scheduler or another startup mechanism, configure it to run OBS under the Windows account that can access the intended OBS profile and media. Whether a task can run before sign-in or needs an interactive desktop depends on your Windows setup and content sources; there is no single task configuration that fits every Windows edition and account arrangement.
3. Configure Windows to launch OBS
Use a Windows startup method or scheduled task that launches the OBS executable with --startstreaming, and set the task’s working directory to the directory containing obs64.exe. Verify the actual executable path on your installation. OBS’s documentation establishes the required parameter and working-directory detail, but Windows task options and labels vary, so check the settings available on your version of Windows rather than copying an unverified universal recipe.

4. Test with a real restart
- Save your OBS configuration and any Windows startup or task changes.
- Restart Windows, then observe whether OBS opens and loads the expected scene and media.
- Check whether OBS begins sending video, then open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the stream is online and healthy.
- Leave the stream running long enough to verify it remains connected and that the content is correct.
A task that starts OBS is not proof that the stream recovered: the profile, content, network, and YouTube connection must all work too. YouTube recommends checking the preview, stream health, and audience access in its streaming tips.

- OBS never appears after reboot: Check the Windows startup or task configuration, the account under which it runs, the executable path, and the task’s working directory. OBS documents the launch and working-directory requirements in its launch-parameter guidance.
- OBS opens but does not start streaming: Confirm
--startstreamingis attached to the command that actually launches OBS. Check that the intended OBS configuration and scene load; consult the OBS setup guide. - OBS starts but YouTube stays offline: Check that internet access is available, then verify the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS against the intended stream in Live Control Room. If the encoder reports a start error, YouTube advises obtaining a stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder; see YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
- The stream connects, then drops: Check network reliability and YouTube’s stream-health status. YouTube notes that network disruptions can break a stream; its streaming tips explain what to monitor.
- The stream is online but shows the wrong content: Check the OBS scene, media sources, and profile. The successful launch only confirms that OBS ran; it does not confirm that the intended sources loaded.
Know what a restart means for the YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast interrupted by a Windows restart will appear as one uninterrupted archive. After a restart, check the resulting entries in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the archive is continuous. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
