If YouTube Live says it is receiving insufficient video data while you stream from OBS, treat the message as a symptom—not proof that your bitrate is too low. First compare YouTube’s stream health with OBS Statistics to find whether the problem is the upload path, OBS rendering or encoding performance, or the output settings. Then change the setting that matches the evidence and test again before going live.
Start by locating where the stream is failing
The visible warning wording can vary by interface and language. The phrase alone does not identify a cause. In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health and any accompanying messages; in OBS, check Statistics during a test. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing before an event with representative audio and video movement. YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming recommendations explain the platform-side settings.

- Network-dropped frames or transmission instability: investigate the connection between OBS and YouTube, including upload capacity and Wi-Fi stability.
- Rendering lag, encoding lag, an “encoding overloaded” warning, or choppy preview/output: investigate local GPU and OBS workload.
- Neither branch is clear: verify output configuration and run a controlled test, changing one variable at a time.
Record whether the stream starts, stalls, disconnects, or stays live with degraded health. Note the output resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, encoder, keyframe interval, and whether OBS sends directly to YouTube or through a relay or multistream service. If you seek support, preserve the OBS log from the attempt.
Check whether your connection can sustain the stream
A speed test’s peak upload result is not the same as a stable connection during a live stream. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the connection and testing upload bitrate. Compare your configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection can sustain them.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Run an upload speed test and assess consistency, not only the top result.
- During a representative test, avoid other uploads or transfers that may compete for the same connection.
- If OBS shows network-dropped frames or the connection appears unstable, lower the video bitrate or output quality and test again.
- If you suspect Wi-Fi instability, try wired Ethernet where practical. This is a conditional way to test the network path, not a fix for encoding overload or incorrect settings.
- If you send multiple feeds, include every outgoing feed in your upload-capacity calculation. Check whether the relay receives a healthy feed as well as whether OBS can deliver to it.
A relay or multistream route adds another point to inspect: determine whether the problem appears between OBS and the relay, or between the relay and YouTube. A report of the same warning in a multistream setup is anecdotal and does not establish a particular cause.
Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as a settings check
For the formats below, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations provide a useful comparison point. The figures are from YouTube Help, accessed in 2026; they are platform recommendations, not measured connection requirements. Use YouTube’s current table for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Bitrate mode: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a 2-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Use a codec supported by your encoder and workflow, and consult the platform’s codec-specific bitrate guidance.
These values are a settings check, not a reason to raise bitrate automatically. If your network cannot reliably carry the chosen output, reduce bitrate or quality and test. If the connection is healthy but OBS is overloaded, address local performance instead.
Reduce OBS rendering or encoding pressure
When OBS reports encoding overload, encoding lag, or rendering lag, lowering the bitrate alone may not resolve the local workload. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing output demands and freeing resources.

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
- Reduce the output resolution and test again.
- If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps.
- Limit a game’s frame rate or graphics settings so it leaves resources for OBS.
- Close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- Simplify demanding scenes by reducing expensive capture, media, or browser sources, filters, and unnecessary scene complexity.
These changes target local rendering and encoding pressure. They do not increase upload capacity; return to the network checks if OBS Statistics points to dropped frames in transmission instead.
Run a representative test before the next live event
- Set the protocol, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s recommendations for your workflow.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate that both your system and connection can handle reliably.
- Test with the kind of audio and video movement expected in the actual stream. A static scene may not reveal the same workload or stability issues.
- Watch YouTube stream health and OBS Statistics during the test; identify whether network drops, rendering lag, or encoding lag recur.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the test so you can tell which change helped.
For a live event, keep monitoring stream health. A successful short test is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee that changing network conditions or system workload will remain stable throughout a longer broadcast.

Common symptoms and what to try
| What you see | Likely branch to investigate | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Statistics shows network-dropped frames | Upload path or competing network traffic | Check upload stability, reduce output bitrate or quality, and test wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi seems unstable. |
| OBS reports encoding or rendering lag, or the preview is choppy | Local performance | Reduce resolution or frame rate, free GPU resources, and simplify scenes or sources. |
| Configured H.264 bitrate differs from the relevant YouTube recommendation | Output configuration or a connection unable to sustain the chosen output | Verify the current YouTube table and test a suitable bitrate reliably. |
| OBS sends through a relay or multistream service | Either the OBS-to-relay or relay-to-YouTube path | Check the health of each leg and account for all outgoing feeds in upload capacity. |
| YouTube shows degraded health but OBS does not clearly identify a branch | Undetermined from the warning alone | Review YouTube’s accompanying message, record OBS output settings, and run a representative test while observing both. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous, pre-recorded YouTube stream rather than a live camera or interactive OBS production, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera broadcasts. Start the free StreamNeo day.
