A green YouTube Live picture is a symptom, not proof that one FFmpeg codec option is wrong. Find the first point where the image turns green—source preview, local recording, Live Control Room, or YouTube playback—then inspect the pixel-format and color-conversion path at that stage. YouTube’s ingest recommendations help check compatibility and quality, but they do not identify a specific green-video setting.
Find where the picture first turns green
Compare the same content at each available stage. This narrows the fault before you change encoder settings.

- Check the source preview. Inspect the camera, capture device, decoded input, or other source before FFmpeg encodes it. YouTube notes that poor-looking live video can originate in the audio or video sources routed to the encoder (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting). If the source is already green, changing an output H.264 option is unlikely to repair that upstream signal.
- Record locally using the same input and filter graph. Compare this recording with the source and the Live Control Room preview. A green local file points toward the input, filter, pixel-format conversion, or encoder path. If the local file is clean but the Live Control Room preview is green, investigate the emitted stream and ingest path. This comparison is a diagnostic inference, not a guaranteed way to isolate one setting.
- Check YouTube playback separately. Note whether the green image appears in the Live Control Room preview, only in playback, or in both. The difference helps locate whether the issue is present in the stream YouTube receives or appears later.
YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while live (YouTube live encoder settings). Keep a known-good local sample and change one variable at a time.

Check FFmpeg’s pixel-format and conversion path
Read the actual stream and encoder details
Review FFmpeg’s startup and output logs to confirm which video stream is selected, the decoder’s output pixel format, the pixel formats entering and leaving each filter, and the encoder’s output format. Do not assume that every FFmpeg installation supports the same formats: the formats available through the libx264 wrapper depend on how FFmpeg was built (FFmpeg codec documentation).

libx264rgb accepts packed RGB input; ordinary libx264 is a different choice. Select an encoder that fits the formats in your pipeline rather than treating the two as interchangeable. If the log shows a format conversion, identify which stage performs it and check that the conversion is intentional.
Inspect filters, range, and color space
Look through the filter graph for scaling and RGB-to-YUV or YUV-to-YUV conversion. Check the pixel format, range, and color-space handling at those points, along with any color metadata being assigned. A mismatch or unexpected conversion can produce incorrect color, but the green picture alone does not identify which one occurred.

A 2013 FFmpeg-user report describes a subtle green tint in one RGB/YUV conversion workflow, particularly around conversion to yuv420p and scaling (FFmpeg-user discussion). That is a historical report about one workflow, not evidence that yuv420p generally causes green video. Setting -pix_fmt yuv420p may be appropriate for a pipeline, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Compare the output with YouTube’s ingest recommendations
These settings help you check stream compatibility and quality; YouTube does not say that violating them causes a green picture. Its current guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and supports up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR (10-bit HDR) (YouTube live encoder settings).

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
- Codec and build: Confirm that YouTube supports the chosen ingest codec and that your FFmpeg build supports the encoder and pixel format you are using.
- Color mode: For SDR, check Rec. 709 and 8-bit output. HDR uses different guidance, including 10-bit; do not apply SDR assumptions to an HDR pipeline.
- Frame rate and keyframes: Check the actual output frame rate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s recommendations.
- Resolution and bitrate: Match the bitrate to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate—not to an unrelated command example.
For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended ingest bitrate for 1080p30, with a 5 Mbps minimum; for 1080p60, it lists 17 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps minimum. These figures address ingest quality and reliability; they do not diagnose green video. Consult YouTube’s current table for other codecs and output formats rather than extrapolating from these two H.264 examples.
Test a change without losing the diagnostic trail
- Save the exact FFmpeg command, the complete relevant startup and output log, and a local recording made through the same input and filters.
- Run a short test with representative motion and audio. Check the source preview, local recording, and Live Control Room preview.
- Change only one relevant variable at a time, such as an unexpected filter conversion or an output-format choice. Record what changed and compare the results.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. Keep the sample from each attempt so a color change can be tied to a specific change in the pipeline.
A specific cause cannot be named from the symptom alone. For a targeted diagnosis, the useful details are the exact command and relevant logs, FFmpeg version and build configuration, source codec and pixel format, filter graph, a local recording from that pipeline, and which viewing stage first shows green.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing several encoder flags at once: You may lose track of which change affected the picture. Change one variable, then compare the same stages.
- Assuming the source is clean: Check the camera, capture device, or decoded input first. An upstream green signal will not usually be repaired by an output codec option.
- Assuming
yuv420pis the culprit: The historical conversion report does not establish a general defect. Inspect the actual conversion and the formats around it. - Copying an old command as a current recommendation: A 2020 FFmpeg-user thread is an example of an FFmpeg-to-YouTube command, not a current canonical template or present-day settings authority (FFmpeg-user discussion). Check current YouTube guidance and your own FFmpeg logs instead.
