How to Capture a Webpage Screenshot with an AI Agent in Firefox

Connect an AI agent to Firefox DevTools MCP for page or element screenshots, or use Firefox’s headless command line and built-in capture tools.

To capture a webpage with an AI agent in Firefox, connect the agent to Firefox through Mozilla’s Firefox DevTools MCP, navigate to the page, then use its screenshot_page or screenshot_by_uid tool. For a simple repeatable capture without an agent, Firefox also supports headless screenshots from the command line. The MCP project is pre-1.0, so check its current documentation for tool names and compatibility before relying on a workflow.

Use Firefox DevTools MCP for an agent-controlled capture

Mozilla’s Firefox DevTools MCP project lets AI assistants inspect and control Firefox through WebDriver BiDi. Its documented screenshot tools are screenshot_page for a page and screenshot_by_uid for an element identified by UID. In command-line environments, the tools accept an optional saveTo destination.

  1. Set up the Firefox DevTools MCP connection using the project’s current instructions and verify that your MCP client can control the intended Firefox instance.
  2. Have the agent navigate to the target URL and wait until the page has reached the state you want to capture. Waiting for the relevant content is prudent workflow guidance; the project documentation cited here does not guarantee a particular page-readiness or timing behavior.
  3. For a page capture, ask the agent to call screenshot_page. For a particular element, identify it in the page and use screenshot_by_uid with the appropriate UID.
  4. If supported by your client workflow, provide a distinct saveTo path so the resulting image is saved where you expect it.

These tool names and behaviors are version-sensitive: the repository labels its API pre-1.0. Check the current project documentation for the exact setup, supported client configuration, and arguments. The cited materials do not establish that a particular login flow, site, or Firefox build has been tested.

Choose the capture scope you need

Route Scope and output Best fit and caveat
Firefox DevTools MCP Page or UID-selected element; optional saveTo in CLI environments Agent-controlled capture. Tool names and compatibility may change while the project is pre-1.0.
Firefox command line Screenshot file with a configurable window size Repeatable headless capture when an AI agent is unnecessary. Documented for Windows, Linux GTK, and macOS; available flags can vary by build and platform.
Built-in Firefox screenshot UI Visible page, full page, selected region, or automatically highlighted page part; save or copy Manual capture or fallback. On Wayland, Firefox Support says crosshair keyboard movement does not work.
DevTools Web Console Viewport or full page, or a selected element; file and clipboard-related options Developer-directed capture. Reusing a filename overwrites the previous image.

Mozilla’s Firefox Source Docs describe Developer Tools as a way to capture “the entire page, or of a single element in the page.” For a selector-based element capture, the Web Console helper is a direct option; the MCP UID workflow is useful when the agent is already operating the browser.

Capture from Firefox’s Web Console

Firefox’s DevTools Web Console provides the :screenshot helper. Its documented options include --fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr, and --filename, along with clipboard and file controls. For example, to capture a full page to a named file, enter this in the Web Console:

:screenshot --fullpage --filename page.png

To capture an element and its descendants, use its CSS selector:

:screenshot --selector "main article" --filename article.png

Use a new filename for each capture you need to keep. Firefox’s documentation warns that a repeated filename overwrites the earlier image. Check the current DevTools documentation for the exact syntax of additional options such as delay and device-pixel ratio.

Run a headless screenshot from the command line

If the job only needs a URL and an image file, Firefox can capture without a visible browser window. The documented command-line options include --headless, --screenshot <path>, and --window-size width[,height]. For example:

firefox --headless --screenshot /path/output.png --window-size 1280,900 https://example.com

Replace the URL and output path with your own. Change 1280,900 to the desired window dimensions. Firefox documents headless mode for Windows, Linux GTK, and macOS, and notes that --screenshot implies headless mode. The exact flags available can differ by platform or build, so consult Mozilla’s Firefox Source Docs command-line documentation for your installation.

Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot UI for a manual fallback

  1. Open the page in Firefox and open the screenshot interface using its toolbar entry or the documented keyboard shortcut in Mozilla Support.
  2. Choose the visible-page, full-page, selected-region, or automatically highlighted page-part capture that matches your need.
  3. Save the image or copy it to the clipboard.

The manual UI is useful when the agent connection is unavailable or you need to select a region by eye. If you use Wayland, Firefox Support notes that keyboard movement of the screenshot crosshair does not work; use another selection method if that limitation affects your workflow.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

  • The MCP client cannot take a screenshot: confirm that the agent is connected to the intended Firefox instance through the configured WebDriver BiDi integration, then check the current MCP repository instructions. The project is pre-1.0, so names and compatibility details may have changed.
  • The screenshot shows an incomplete page state: have the agent wait for the specific content or interaction state you need before requesting the capture. No fixed readiness guarantee is established by the cited MCP documentation.
  • An earlier image disappeared: use a unique output filename for each Web Console capture; Firefox documents that a repeated filename is overwritten.
  • The headless command fails on your installation: check whether your Firefox build and platform support the documented flags, confirm the output directory exists and is writable, and verify the URL and path. Firefox’s documentation lists Windows, Linux GTK, and macOS for headless mode but cautions that available parameters may vary.
  • You cannot steer the manual selection crosshair with the keyboard: on Wayland this is a documented Firefox Screenshots limitation; try selecting by pointer instead.

Privacy scope of Firefox Screenshots

Mozilla Support says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction data such as whether you use Copy or Save full page, and says it does not collect the URL or details of the captured image. This statement applies to Firefox’s built-in screenshot feature; it does not establish what a third-party agent, MCP client, model provider, or website may collect.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want an API call instead of configuring Firefox and an agent, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP capture of the requested page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
