YouTube supplies the destination URL and stream key in Live Control Room. The video does not stream directly from an S3 viewer link.
This is a managed cloud-encoding workflow: useful when the source is already in AWS or you want the broadcast to run without a home computer continuously encoding it. You still need to configure, monitor and stop the AWS channel, and AWS charges depend on the configuration and runtime.

Before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days.
- An MP4 video accessible in an Amazon S3 bucket.
- An AWS account with access to MediaLive and the services needed to configure the input and output.
- A scheduled YouTube live event, so you can retrieve its stream URL and key and check the preview before the event.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says to set up at least two hours before an event and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. These are planning recommendations, not a guarantee that setup will take a particular amount of time.
How the AWS-to-YouTube workflow fits together
- Source: MediaLive pulls the MP4 from S3 as a VOD input. AWS documents an S3 location in the form
s3ssl://bucket/object. - Encoding and delivery: MediaLive processes that input and creates a live output. Configure the output destination using the actual YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Viewing: YouTube receives the live feed and makes the event available to viewers. This is not a public S3-file link being relayed as-is.
AWS’s workflow wizard documents an MP4 source stored on S3 or HTTP and YouTube as an output. The precise setup screens can vary by account and configuration, so treat the wizard as a guided route rather than assuming every account displays identical steps.

Set up the YouTube event and get its ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event. Confirm the event’s visibility, title, audience setting and start time before broadcasting.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder. Use the RTMPS URL revealed from the lock icon where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter it only into the AWS output configuration; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the event.
- Leave the event available for preview. Do not assume the YouTube broadcast is live to viewers merely because the AWS channel has started sending a feed; check the event’s preview and use YouTube’s go-live controls as appropriate.
Do not copy a sample server address from a tutorial into a real channel. The destination and key must be the ones YouTube provides for your event.
Configure MediaLive for an S3 MP4 input and YouTube output
1. Create the VOD input
In MediaLive, create an input for the MP4 in S3 and provide its secure S3 location. Confirm that the bucket and object are accessible to the AWS workflow you configure. This is an MP4 VOD source, not a live RTMPS input.
2. Create and configure the channel
Create a MediaLive channel that uses the S3 input. Choose output video and audio settings that match the source where practical and satisfy YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Configure the output destination with YouTube’s RTMPS server URL and the event’s stream key. AWS describes RTMP destinations as being made up of the protocol, server address, port, application name and stream name; use YouTube’s supplied values rather than constructing them from an example.

3. Check direction and protocol
In this arrangement, S3 MP4 is the input and RTMPS to YouTube is the output. MediaLive supports RTMPS output, but its input-format documentation does not list RTMPS as a supported input. Do not confuse the secure YouTube destination with the source format.
Choose encoder settings that fit the source
YouTube’s current ordinary SDR RTMP(S) guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, constant bitrate, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s examples recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60.
| Output consideration | Practical setting or check |
|---|---|
| Codec | Use a supported codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 for ordinary SDR RTMP(S) streaming. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps; avoid asking the output to exceed what the source or workflow can sustain. |
| Bitrate | Constant bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 examples are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60; these are recommendations, not a promise of a particular viewer experience. |
| Keyframes | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Audio and motion | Test with audio and movement similar to the actual video, then inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health messages. |
Choose a bitrate the source, encoder configuration and delivery path can maintain. YouTube transcodes a live input into multiple output formats. HLS is another ingestion option for workflows that specifically need it, but it is not the default choice for this straightforward MP4-to-YouTube workflow; YouTube notes HLS has higher latency than RTMP and specifies 1–4 second TS segments with no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist.

Test, launch, monitor and stop the broadcast
- Start early: Use YouTube’s recommended lead time: prepare at least two hours ahead and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- Start the AWS channel: Start the configured MediaLive channel and allow it to pull the S3 asset and send output.
- Check preview: Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that both picture and sound are present before going live.
- Monitor during the event: Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. If health degrades, check the AWS channel and output as well as the YouTube event settings.
- End deliberately: Stop the broadcast and the AWS channel when finished so the channel is not left running unnecessarily.
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not treat that as a guarantee for broadcasts at or beyond that duration.
India-specific AWS region and cost checks
There is no single verified AWS price or region choice for this workflow: the total depends on current regional service availability, channel configuration, output settings, runtime and any redundancy you enable. Before scheduling a long broadcast, confirm that MediaLive is available in the AWS Region you intend to use and calculate the complete current estimate for that exact setup. Do not infer the total from storage alone; the channel’s processing and operating time matter.
If the MP4 is already in a suitable S3 location, keeping the source and workflow close together may simplify the transfer path, but confirm regional compatibility rather than assuming it. For a local encoder instead, upload bandwidth and the computer’s ability to encode continuously become operational constraints.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Having permission to store a video in S3 does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to broadcast it on YouTube. Confirm rights for the video, music, artwork and any other included material before streaming. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization assessments are separate from whether a stream technically works; a live broadcast is not automatically eligible for monetization because it is prerecorded or hosted in AWS. Review YouTube’s current policies for the channel and content before relying on a stream as a monetized format.
When AWS is a fit—and when to consider another route
MediaLive is a documented option when you want an AWS-managed workflow with an S3 MP4 source and a live YouTube output. It involves cloud configuration, monitoring and runtime costs. A desktop encoder may be more direct if you already have suitable hardware and can keep it and the connection running; AWS is not established as cheaper or simpler for every creator.

Quick Recap
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Checks |
|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming feed | Confirm the MediaLive channel is running, the output uses the current event’s stream URL and key, and the key was entered without alteration. |
| MediaLive cannot read the source | Check the S3 bucket/object location, the secure S3 path and access permissions for the configured workflow. |
| Feed arrives but preview is black or silent | Check the source file and configured video/audio outputs; test with representative picture and sound before the event. |
| Stream health reports problems | Compare output codec, frame rate, constant bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance; inspect AWS channel status and YouTube’s event messages. |
| RTMPS connection is mistaken for an input setting | Keep the directions straight: S3 MP4 is the MediaLive input and YouTube RTMPS is its output. |
| Unexpected AWS cost or a channel left running | Check the selected Region, channel configuration and runtime estimate, and stop the channel promptly after the event. |
