If OBS is dropping frames while streaming to YouTube, first lower the stream’s total bitrate until it fits your sustained upload speed—not your download speed—and leave room for fluctuations and other household traffic. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. For a constrained connection, test 480p30 or 720p30 before trying a higher resolution or 60 fps; there is no single bitrate that works for every Indian ISP, mobile network or home connection.
What OBS dropped frames mean
OBS’s dropped-frames counter points to a connection problem between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, often because the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It is different from an overloaded encoder, which is a separate issue. When the dropped-frames counter rises, investigate the network path and bitrate first. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide explains this distinction and possible network remedies.

There is no universal “Indian connection” setting: upload capacity and stability vary by ISP, location, time of day, whether you use Wi-Fi or mobile data, and how many other devices are using the connection. Use measurements from the network and time you will actually stream.
Measure upload capacity and choose a sustainable bitrate
- Run an upload speed test on the connection you plan to use, at the time you expect to stream. Repeat it if results vary; a single result may not represent sustained capacity.
- Account for other people and devices sharing the connection. YouTube notes that upload bandwidth available to the stream can be reduced by competing network use, and that upload speed may be lower than download speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom: do not plan to use all measured upload capacity for the stream. Include audio and any other stream traffic when judging the total bitrate.
- Set a lower video bitrate and resolution if the total stream bitrate is too close to the available upload capacity. Retest under realistic conditions before relying on the settings for a live broadcast.
YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate ranges are starting points for encoder configuration, not promises that a particular connection can sustain them:

| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate range | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 480p30 | 0.4–4 Mbps | A lower-resolution option to test when upload capacity is constrained. |
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps | A step up to test if the connection remains stable with sufficient headroom. |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps | Higher motion smoothness, but do not choose it unless the measured connection can sustain the total bitrate. |
The ranges come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. They do not establish what an individual Indian household, ISP or mobile network can reliably upload. Higher resolution and frame rate can demand more bitrate; for a stable stream, a lower-quality setting that stays connected may be preferable to a sharper target that repeatedly drops frames.
OBS and YouTube settings to keep correct
Reducing bitrate does not excuse incorrect encoder settings. For a conservative compatibility baseline, use H.264 video and AAC audio, then verify the output and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as recommended by YouTube.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says keyframes should be no more than 4 seconds apart.
- Video bitrate: Choose a target that, together with audio and other stream traffic, fits within sustainable upload capacity after leaving the recommended headroom.
- Resolution and frame rate: Test a lower target such as 480p30 or 720p30 when bandwidth is limited. Choose based on measured stability and the detail and motion in your content.
YouTube’s exact current format and bitrate requirements are listed in its encoder settings guidance. During a test stream, check Live Control Room stream-health messages for warnings about bitrate, format, resolution or keyframe frequency. Viewer playback alone may not reveal an ingestion configuration problem.

| What you see | Likely issue to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise during the stream | Unstable network path or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. | Recheck upload capacity under actual conditions, reduce total bitrate, and test with less competing network traffic. |
| Drops occur on Wi-Fi but the cause is unclear | Wireless instability may be affecting the local connection. | Test with Ethernet. A cable can improve the local link’s stability, but it cannot add ISP upload capacity or fix congestion upstream of your home network. |
| YouTube reports a bitrate, format, resolution or keyframe error | An encoder setting may not match YouTube’s requirements. | Check the H.264/AAC format, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution and bitrate against YouTube’s published guidance, then test again. |
| Drops continue despite lowering quality | The upstream connection may be unstable or shared, or the network route to the ingest server may be unreliable. | Repeat the test at another time, reduce competing traffic, try a wired connection and continue monitoring OBS and Live Control Room health. |
OBS also offers dynamic bitrate adjustment, which can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. Treat it as a fallback: quality can fall, and OBS notes that dynamic bitrate does not fix the underlying connection issue. Details are in the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
