If OBS reconnects but your YouTube livestream has sound and no picture, first compare the OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube Live Control Room. That quick check tells you whether video is missing at the source, in OBS’s output, or after it reaches YouTube. A reconnect message confirms a connection attempt—not that video resumed or that YouTube is receiving a valid video stream.
First, locate where the video disappears
- Check the OBS preview. Is the active scene visibly producing video? If not, inspect the selected scene, source visibility, and whether a capture device or other video source is active.
- Check a local recording from the affected period, if available. If both the preview and recording lack video, focus on the scene, source, or OBS video-output path. If the recording has video, the problem is more likely between OBS’s output and YouTube ingest.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the stream preview, health indicator, and timestamped error messages. YouTube’s error guidance includes messages for a stream with no video and for incorrect video keyframe frequency. Match your next action to the message rather than guessing at settings.
- Preserve evidence before changing settings. Keep the local recording and OBS logs covering the reconnect, and note the time of any YouTube health error. These clues help distinguish a source or encoder fault from an ingest or network problem.
YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, and checking the local archive for audio/video problems. Its live-stream troubleshooting guidance is useful alongside the evidence from OBS and Live Control Room.

Fix the problem indicated by the checks
If OBS preview and local recording both have no video
- Confirm that the intended scene is selected and that the video source is visible and enabled.
- Check whether the capture device is active and producing an image. If the scene uses multiple sources, inspect them individually to find where the picture disappears.
- Review OBS’s video encoder and output status, along with CPU load and any encoder errors around the reconnect. Audio meters moving do not prove that a video stream is being sent.
- After correcting the source or output issue, make a short local recording and verify that it contains both picture and sound before relying on the next live attempt.
If OBS and the local recording have video, but YouTube does not
Open YouTube Live Control Room and use its timestamped health messages to narrow the problem. A “no video stream” message points to checking whether OBS is actually sending video after the reconnect. A keyframe-frequency message points to the video encoder’s keyframe cadence. A healthy local picture alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving valid video.

Check the encoder settings for the protocol and stream configuration you actually use. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Supported codecs and options vary by protocol and configuration, so follow YouTube’s current guidance for your setup rather than treating one preset as universal.

Change the setting that matches the reported error, then verify the resulting video in Live Control Room. Do not assume that changing the stream key will fix an audio-only stream: YouTube’s stream-key guidance concerns encoder-start or key errors, and a key change is not established as a remedy for this symptom.
If OBS output looks healthy but frames are dropping or the connection is unstable
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says, “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” If the OBS preview and local recording are intact but delivery falters, test a stable lower video bitrate and investigate the connection to the ingest server. YouTube also recommends checking outbound internet connectivity when encoder output appears healthy.

Check the network only when the symptoms point there
A network investigation is appropriate when OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, or when local output is intact but delivery to YouTube is unstable. Wi-Fi can be an instability source, but it is not a universal explanation for missing video. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming, so if you are using Wi-Fi, testing with a wired Ethernet connection can help isolate the wireless link.
Recommended Free Tools
- Try a lower, sustainable video bitrate and check whether dropped frames stop.
- Use OBS’s service or server isolation tests and review network configuration, as appropriate to your setup.
- Restart a modem or router, or test network hardware, only when the evidence suggests a connection problem. Replacing equipment is not a first response to a YouTube error specifically reporting no video or incorrect keyframes.
Verify the fix before the next important stream
Run a controlled test and monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Its encoder settings and streaming tips also recommend checking the preview, local archive, and audio/video quality.
