YouTube Live Settings for 4K 30fps in FFmpeg: Bitrate, Keyframes, and Command

YouTube recommends 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K30. Here is an FFmpeg starting command, the settings behind it, and a practical test checklist.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 4K/2160p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265. A practical H.264 FFmpeg starting point is RTMPS, 3840×2160 at 30 fps, CBR-style rate control, a 60-frame GOP (two seconds), and stereo AAC at 128 kbps. Those settings describe YouTube’s ingest recommendations; they do not guarantee that your encoder or internet connection can sustain a stable stream.

Recommended YouTube Live settings for 4K 30fps

The figures below are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations, not a promise of real-time encoding or upload performance. Match bitrate to the codec you actually send.

Setting Recommended starting point Notes
Resolution and frame rate 3840×2160 (2160p), 30 fps Use this output only if the source, encoder, and connection can sustain it.
Video codec and bitrate H.264: 42 Mbps recommended; 11 Mbps minimum. AV1 or H.265: 30 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum. Figures are YouTube’s current settings guidance, accessed 2026. Minimum is not the same as a recommended target.
Protocol RTMPS where available YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
Rate control CBR FFmpeg options vary by encoder; verify the selected encoder’s behavior.
Keyframes Every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds.
Stereo audio AAC or MP3; 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz The example below uses AAC. YouTube lists 5.1 audio at 384 kbps and 48 kHz; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit Tags should match the source; tagging does not convert unsuitable color.
Latency Normal latency YouTube does not offer its “improve for low latency” option for 4K.

FFmpeg command for a 4K 30fps H.264 stream

This is a starting example derived from YouTube’s settings and FFmpeg documentation, not a tested universal preset. It assumes an SDR Rec. 709 source, stereo audio, an FFmpeg build with libx264, and enough CPU or GPU and upload capacity. Replace INPUT with the file path and replace the RTMPS placeholder with the ingest URL and stream key copied from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -vf "scale=3840:2160:flags=lanczos,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v high
  -b:v 42M -minrate 42M -maxrate 42M -bufsize 84M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -bf 2 -refs 1 -coder cabac
  -color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"

What the important options do

  • -re reads a file at its native rate, pacing the input for streaming. Do not use it with an actual capture device or live input; FFmpeg warns it can cause packet loss in that case.
  • -vf scales to 3840×2160, sets 30 fps, and outputs 8-bit 4:2:0 pixel format. This scales every source, including smaller ones. Adjust the filter if you need to preserve aspect ratio or avoid upscaling.
  • -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate set equal video rates for a CBR-style setup. Their precise behavior depends on the encoder.
  • -bufsize 84M is an example two-second encoder rate-control buffer at 42 Mbps. It is not extra network bitrate.
  • -g 60 sets a maximum 60-frame GOP, two seconds at 30 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • The three bt709 options tag Rec. 709 color metadata. They do not transform non-Rec. 709 footage. Convert the source appropriately rather than merely relabeling it.

For file input, -re behavior and the live-input warning are documented by the FFmpeg documentation. Bitrate, GOP, and encoder options are described in the FFmpeg codec documentation.

Choose the codec your setup can actually send

H.264 is a broadly compatible starting example, but YouTube’s lower recommended bitrate for AV1/H.265 may be useful if your installed encoder and stream mode support them reliably.

Prepare and test before going live

  1. Copy the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Do not publish the key, paste it into public logs, or share it.
  2. Check the local encoder. Confirm your FFmpeg build lists the chosen encoder and supports the rate-control and GOP options you plan to use. Encoder options differ between builds and encoders.
  3. Check upload capacity. Test the connection and leave headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and protocol overhead. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the available connection.
  4. Run a representative test. Use a private or unlisted test, as appropriate, with picture movement and audio like the actual stream. YouTube specifically recommends tests that include similar audio and movement.
  5. Watch stream health and logs. Look for dropped frames, disconnects, and unstable bitrate while the test runs.
  6. Adjust and test again if needed. Reduce encoder workload, try an available hardware encoder, or lower resolution and bitrate. A bitrate setting alone cannot ensure 4K playback.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings and testing guidance for its current ingest recommendations.

Troubleshooting common 4K30 problems

Symptom Likely cause What to try
FFmpeg reports that an encoder or option is unavailable The local build lacks the selected encoder or does not support that encoder’s options. Check the build’s encoder list and encoder-specific help; use an encoder available in the build and verify its rate-control and GOP behavior.
Encoder logs show missed or dropped frames The machine cannot encode the chosen settings in real time. Use a faster preset, try a suitable hardware encoder, or lower output resolution or frame rate; rerun a representative test.
YouTube reports unstable ingest or dropped frames Upload capacity may be insufficient or inconsistent, or the bitrate target may leave too little headroom. Check the connection under realistic conditions, allow overhead beyond video bitrate, and lower bitrate or resolution until stream health is stable.
Stream fails when using -re with a camera or capture device -re is intended to pace file input; FFmpeg warns against using it on live inputs. Remove -re for the live or capture input and check the input’s own timing and buffering.
Color looks wrong despite BT.709 flags The source may not be Rec. 709 SDR; the flags tag metadata but do not convert image values. Confirm source color properties and perform an appropriate conversion before applying matching output tags.
Picture is stretched or soft The sample filter forces every source to 3840×2160, which can distort a mismatched aspect ratio or upscale small footage. Use a filter that preserves the source aspect ratio and avoid upscaling if that better suits the material.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or one scheduled event, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the video as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers it. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI works as well as cards. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera livestream service.
