To start a YouTube channel, sign in with a Google Account, create a YouTube channel, record a video with the phone or computer you already have, then upload it in YouTube Studio and review its details and visibility before publishing. You do not need a dedicated camera or studio to begin. Choose equipment later if you find a real problem with framing, sound, or lighting.
Create the right kind of channel
A Google Account lets you watch and subscribe, but you need a YouTube channel to upload videos. YouTube offers a personal channel for an individual and a business or other-name channel associated with a Brand Account, which can support multiple owners or managers.
- Sign in to YouTube with your Google Account.
- Open YouTube’s channel creation guidance and follow the current channel-creation flow. Labels and menus can change.
- Choose the personal route if the channel is yours alone under your identity. Choose the business or other-name route if you want a separate identity or need to share channel management.
- Add a profile picture, channel name, and handle, then confirm the channel appears under your account.
For a small team, decide who should own and manage the channel before publishing. A shared business identity can avoid tying the public-facing channel name to one person’s name.
Choose a first-video format before buying gear
Start with what you want to make: a desk-based talking head, a moving vlog, a demonstration, a screen tutorial, or a live stream. This choice determines what matters most. A talking head needs clear voice audio and steady framing; a moving vlog benefits from portability; a demonstration may need the subject and its details in focus; a screen tutorial needs a computer recording workflow.

YouTube’s Video equipment tips say there is no single camera for everyone and recommend considering your goals. The guide also says you can start with a mobile device. If cost is a concern, begin with equipment you already own and upgrade only to solve a specific limitation.
What type of camera will I use?
A phone is a sensible first camera if it records the kind of video you plan to publish. It is portable and already combines a camera with a convenient upload path through the YouTube app. For a stable desk shot, a phone stand or smartphone tripod is an optional, task-focused purchase—not a channel requirement.

Before buying a camera, check whether it accepts the microphone you expect to use. A camera upgrade does not automatically fix distant or unclear speech.
How will I handle sound and lighting?
Get speech close and clear
If you rely on a camera’s built-in microphone, YouTube’s general equipment advice says the speaker may need to be about three to four feet from the camera for best audio. That is a guideline, not a universal acoustic rule; room echo, background noise, and the device all affect results.

- Close to the camera: Try the built-in microphone first, then listen to a short test recording before filming the full video.
- Speaker farther away: A directional shotgun microphone can pick up natural sound from farther away. A wireless lavalier can suit someone speaking at a distance from the camera or moving while talking.
- Before buying: Confirm the phone or camera has the required external-microphone input or adapter. Compatibility varies.
A wireless lavalier microphone is an optional way to address distant speech, not a required starter purchase. There is no tested model recommendation here.
Use available light first
Face a window or film outdoors to try natural light before purchasing lighting. For a more controlled setup, a two-point arrangement uses a key light on the subject and a fill light to balance shadows. A soft light can work well for close-ups; a camera-mounted light may suit mobile filming. Choose according to the room, portability needs, and look you want.

Record your first video
- Prepare the shot. Choose a quiet place, position the camera steadily, and frame the subject. For screen-based lessons, prepare the material to show on screen.
- Check sound and light. Record a short test, listen to it, and adjust the microphone distance or position. Move toward usable natural light or adjust the lights you have.
- Record a complete take. Use your phone or camera to create a video file. If using a computer webcam, record with software; YouTube does not supply a built-in webcam recording feature.
- Review the file. Check that the picture, speech, and intended content are present before uploading. Keep a copy of the recording if you want a local backup.
YouTube’s recording and uploading guide covers phone and computer workflows. You can record on a phone and upload using the YouTube app, or save a computer recording and upload it through Studio.

- Open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Upload videos.
- Select the video file and fill in the video details presented in Studio.
- Review the audience and other applicable details, then set visibility deliberately: public, unlisted, or private, as appropriate.
- Publish when the details are ready. YouTube notes that an unfinished upload can be saved as private.
Follow the current steps in YouTube’s upload guide; screen labels may change. Do not treat an upload as public until you have checked its visibility setting.

Understand monetization as a later eligibility process
Creating a channel or reaching a subscriber/view threshold does not guarantee monetization. YouTube checks policy and account requirements, then reviews the channel after an application. The YouTube Partner Program overview lists baseline requirements: follow monetization policies, live in a region where the program is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features, and link or set up one active AdSense for YouTube account in Studio.
Standard ad-revenue eligibility
YouTube’s eligibility page, accessed in 2026, lists either of these routes: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Shorts-feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour route. Meeting a threshold allows a channel to apply; YouTube reviews the whole channel and acceptance is not automatic.
Earlier access to some features
In eligible regions, some features may be available earlier at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 long-form watch hours in 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This is not the same as standard ad-revenue eligibility, and each feature has additional conditions. Check the Earn area of YouTube Studio for current regional availability and requirements. Check policy changes before applying
YouTube’s Partner Program overview accessed in 2026 announces updated terms starting February 1, 2027, and says creators should review and accept terms by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing. Check the linked official eligibility page for the applicable terms before acting, since program rules and availability can change.

Common first-upload problems and fixes
- You can watch but cannot upload: Watching and subscribing require a Google Account; uploading requires a YouTube channel. Create one through the channel setup flow.
- The computer recording is missing: YouTube does not provide built-in computer webcam recording. Use recording software to save a video file, then upload it in Studio.
- Speech sounds distant: Move closer to the onboard microphone or test a compatible external mic suited to your setup. Confirm the device input before purchasing.
- The upload is not public: Check the visibility setting in the video details. An unfinished upload may be saved as private.
- You reached a monetization threshold but are not approved: Thresholds are only part of eligibility. Check account, regional and policy requirements and wait for YouTube’s channel review.
