A stable upload-speed test does not prove that your encoder can continuously deliver its configured bitrate to YouTube’s ingest server. Compare the exact warning in YouTube Live Control Room with your encoder’s network and performance indicators, then test one change at a time. The warning alone cannot identify the cause.
Why a speed test can look fine while YouTube reports a poor connection
A speed test is one observation of your connection; a live stream is a continuous delivery of encoded audio and video to YouTube’s ingest server. The test does not establish whether that particular route can sustain your configured bitrate without interruptions, or whether the encoder is producing frames smoothly.

Start with where the warning appears and what the encoder reports at the same time. YouTube’s documented stream-health messages cover configuration issues such as audio, video, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. It also reports when it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. See YouTube’s stream-health guidance and its encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

- Run a test stream and record YouTube’s exact message. Note when it appears and whether it is continuous or intermittent. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event.
- Check your encoder at the same time. If you use OBS, note whether the network dropped-frame counter rises, its connection indicator changes, or you see encoding or rendering performance symptoms. “Poor connection” on its own does not say which category is responsible.
- Write down the stream profile. Record the ingestion protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, and keyframe interval. This lets you check settings against the recommendations for your actual configuration rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.
Check the encoder settings against YouTube’s recommendations
Use YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and ingestion protocol you actually use. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency; its settings say not to exceed four seconds. Do not apply RTMP/RTMPS recommendations blindly to a different protocol.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists these examples:
| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a measurement of what your connection can sustain. YouTube lists different bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so match the table to your encoder’s codec. Its guide also recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

Distinguish network delivery from local encoding or rendering
If OBS shows network dropped frames
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. This points toward delivery to the ingest service; a general speed-test result does not rule it out. The OBS Project connection troubleshooting guide suggests testing a lower bitrate, considering another server or service where appropriate, and checking VPN, security software, network-prioritization tools, drivers, Wi-Fi, and network hardware.
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, compare a test over wired Ethernet. Treat that as a diagnostic comparison, not proof that you need to buy equipment or that a cable will fix the problem.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If network drops are not the signal
Look for local encoding or rendering trouble instead. OBS identifies GPU load, frame rate, output settings, and complex scenes as possible constraints. If the relevant performance indicators point there, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify demanding scenes, or free GPU capacity. Those tests address local workload; they are not a fix for a network-only symptom. See OBS’s encoding and rendering performance guidance.
Run controlled tests and escalate by category
- Change one setting at a time. For example, lower the bitrate while keeping the rest of the profile constant, then compare YouTube’s health message and the encoder’s indicators.
- Compare the network path when practical. If you are on Wi-Fi, test wired Ethernet. If your encoder allows a different ingest server, compare that option without changing several other variables at once.
- Use the evidence to choose the next step. For a YouTube configuration message, address the named category and verify the corresponding encoder setting. For OBS network drops that persist across controlled tests, check software and hardware along the path; OBS recommends contacting your ISP if ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve them. For local performance indicators, reduce the workload demanded of the encoder and system.
- Interpret dynamic bitrate carefully. OBS notes it may reduce quality; it does not resolve the underlying connection problem.
If troubleshooting does not isolate the cause, keep the exact warning, timestamps, encoder logs or statistics, and full profile together. Without those details, it is not possible to name a specific cause reliably.
