How to Run a Nonstop YouTube Stream from a Raspberry Pi in the Cloud

A Pi can encode a live camera feed for YouTube, while cloud looping is a separate workflow for prerecorded video. Learn setup, recovery, archive limits and the cloud alternative.

You can run a nonstop YouTube stream from a Raspberry Pi when the Pi is a physical device connected to a live camera or other source. It encodes and sends the feed to YouTube; it is not a Raspberry Pi running “in the cloud.” If you mean looping prerecorded videos while your own computer is off, use a cloud playback service instead. Those are different setups: StreamNeo is for uploaded-video loops, not live camera feeds from a Pi.

First choose the kind of stream you want

The source determines the right setup. A live camera connected to a Raspberry Pi needs a physical Pi, a working camera and a network connection. A prerecorded loop can instead be played by a cloud service that sends the broadcast to YouTube, without a camera or computer running at home.

Decision Physical Raspberry Pi encoder Managed cloud playback for prerecorded video
Source Live camera or another input attached to the Pi Uploaded prerecorded video
Local equipment Pi, camera or source, stable power and network No dedicated PC or camera for the documented prerecorded workflow
Who maintains it? You maintain the operating system, encoder, network, startup and recovery The provider manages cloud playback; check its controls and service limits
Reliability evidence Startup and retry logic can help, but do not eliminate power, source, network or platform failures Check the vendor’s support terms; no comparable uptime figures are established here
Cost basis Hardware, power and internet use Subscription or usage, storage and transfer terms

A cloud service that loops uploaded files is not automatically able to ingest a live Pi camera. For that, a provider must explicitly support a live input or relay architecture.

Set up a physical Raspberry Pi camera stream

The steps below describe the overall workflow, not a universal command line. Camera device names, codecs, audio mapping, bitrate and RTMP/RTMPS support vary by Pi and camera, so do not copy a generic FFmpeg command without checking it against your exact setup.

  1. Enable live streaming on YouTube

Follow YouTube’s encoder setup in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start.

  2. Create a stream and retrieve its connection details

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot or shared log. The Pi project’s example stores it in local configuration.

  3. Choose RTMPS when available

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection. Copy the RTMPS server URL shown in the stream settings rather than assuming the default RTMP address is encrypted. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

  4. Install an encoder and connect the camera

One documented implementation uses Raspberry Pi OS Lite, FFmpeg and camera tooling on a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, with either an HQ Camera or a USB-camera path. Its hardware checklist calls for a stable 5V supply and network connectivity. These are that project’s choices, not universal minimum requirements. Follow the project’s device-specific instructions at YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine.

  5. Configure startup and recovery

For unattended operation, arrange for the encoder to start at boot and retry after a connection loss. The Pi project documents a systemd service and reconnect attempts; YouTube AutoEncoder documents FFmpeg under systemd and recovery cases such as a host reboot or camera loss. These implementation examples do not guarantee 24/7 uptime.

  6. Check the preview before relying on it

Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives a preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then select Go live. Watch the setup through at least one reconnect or restart test before leaving it unattended.

Keep the Pi stream running unattended

A nonstop stream depends on every part of the chain: camera, Pi, power, network, encoder and YouTube ingest. Automatic startup and retries address only some failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Power: use a stable supply; an unexpected shutdown stops encoding until the Pi restarts.
  • Network: confirm that the Pi can maintain an upload connection. Local Wi-Fi or broadband interruptions can break delivery even if the encoder retries.
  • Camera and audio: verify both are detected after boot and after reconnects. A camera disappearing or changing device identity can leave the encoder without a valid source.
  • Service recovery: configure the encoder to start after boot and restart after a failure, then test those conditions deliberately.
  • Monitoring: check YouTube’s preview and stream status. A process running on the Pi does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a usable broadcast.
  • Security: protect the stream key as a credential. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.

These measures reduce manual intervention but cannot guarantee continuous availability. The cited Pi projects are implementation documentation, not independent reliability tests.

What YouTube’s archive and live-stream rules mean

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that an uninterrupted broadcast longer than 12 hours will have a complete archive. If a full recording matters, plan and verify an independent recording or shorter broadcast sessions rather than assuming the entire nonstop stream will be saved.

Cloud option for prerecorded video

If your goal is a continuous stream of uploaded recordings rather than a live Pi camera, a cloud playback service can avoid keeping a local computer on. YouTube’s verified-encoder information lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos without a camera or dedicated PC. That listing does not establish support for every live-camera workflow, and you should verify current media limits, account permissions, pricing, rotation and archive behavior before choosing a provider.

For a cloud loop, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. It does not relay a live camera feed from a Raspberry Pi. See StreamNeo for the service details.

Troubleshooting a Pi stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not show a preview Live streaming is not enabled yet, or the encoder has the wrong URL or key Allow for first-time activation, then recheck the stream details copied from Live Control Room.
The encoder cannot connect Wrong server URL, network interruption or unsupported RTMPS configuration Copy the current server URL from YouTube’s stream settings and confirm the Pi has network access.
Stream stops after a reboot The encoder service is not enabled at startup Check the systemd service configuration and test a full reboot.
Stream does not recover after a drop Retry behavior is missing or the source/network remains unavailable Inspect service logs, verify camera detection and network access, and test the retry path.
Video arrives without usable audio, or vice versa Incorrect device selection or stream mapping Verify the actual camera and audio device names and encoder mapping for this installation.
Archive is incomplete or absent after a long broadcast The broadcast exceeded the under-12-hour condition in YouTube’s automatic archive guidance Do not rely on that guidance for a stream lasting 12 hours or more; use a separate recording plan.

Estimate the practical cost before choosing

For a physical Pi, account for the device, camera or input source, stable power, network and the time required to maintain the operating system and encoder. For cloud playback, compare the provider’s subscription or usage charges plus storage and transfer limits. No comparable price, latency or uptime figures are established for these architectures, so compare current provider terms directly. StreamNeo provides an upload-time calculator and a cloud-versus-PC cost calculator.
