To capture an app that requires Microsoft Entra ID, first complete its real sign-in flow in a browser, save the authenticated browser state, then load that state into a fresh headless Playwright context before navigating to the protected page. Verify that the app—not a login, consent, or error page—has loaded before saving the screenshot. The saved state is sensitive and may expire or be rejected by your app or tenant policy.
Why a clean headless browser usually shows the sign-in page
A protected web app typically redirects the browser to Microsoft Entra for sign-in and then returns it to the app after authentication and any required consent. A new headless browser context has no signed-in session, so opening the protected URL alone generally starts that flow rather than producing an authenticated page. Microsoft’s sample web-app flow illustrates this browser redirect pattern: Quickstart: Sign in users in a sample web app.

A device-code flow is not a shortcut to a rendered Chrome session. Microsoft describes device-code samples for browserless public clients that authenticate interactively on another device and call services such as Microsoft Graph. That may suit API access, but it does not itself sign a browser into your web app for a screenshot. See Microsoft identity platform code samples.

- Confirm authorization. Use an account and environment approved for automated access. The right account, tenant policy, app registration, and sign-in method depend on your organization and target app.
- Sign in through a browser that can complete the real flow. Follow redirects to Microsoft Entra and complete consent, MFA, or passwordless approval when required.
- Wait for the authenticated app. Do not save state immediately after clicking Sign in. Wait for a final app URL and a meaningful app-specific element or other signal that confirms the signed-in page rendered.
- Save the browser context state. Playwright supports saving authenticated state for use in later contexts. Its documented state includes cookies and local storage; relevant APIs and examples also cover IndexedDB. Check whether your app uses additional mechanisms, such as session storage, rather than assuming the default state file captures everything. See Playwright authentication and Preserve authenticated state with codegen.
- Load that state into a fresh headless context. Navigate to the protected route and check that the authenticated app is present before capturing it.
- Protect the state file. Keep it out of source control, restrict access, do not print its contents to logs, and delete it when no longer needed. Playwright warns that state files may contain cookies and headers capable of impersonating the account.
Runnable Playwright example
This Node.js example separates one-time interactive authentication from repeatable headless captures. Install Playwright with npm install playwright and install its Chromium browser with npx playwright install chromium. Replace the example URL and success selector with values for your app. Keep the state file in a private location excluded from version control.

// save-auth.mjs — run when you need to sign in or refresh state
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: false });
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://app.example.com/', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
console.log('Complete the Microsoft Entra sign-in and any required challenges.');
// Replace this with a stable element visible only after app sign-in.
await page.locator('[data-testid="signed-in-dashboard"]').waitFor({ timeout: 0 });
await context.storageState({ path: 'playwright/.auth/state.json' });
await browser.close();
After interactive sign-in, run the capture script below. It restores the stored state in a new headless context, checks the app-specific success signal, and writes a full-page PNG. The state file path must exist and be readable by the process.
// capture.mjs — repeat for each capture
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
storageState: 'playwright/.auth/state.json',
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://app.example.com/reports', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Fail instead of silently saving a login page or the wrong screen.
await page.locator('[data-testid="signed-in-dashboard"]').waitFor({ timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();

What MFA and tenant policy mean for headless capture
Headless capture can reuse valid state, but it should not be treated as a way to bypass authentication policy. Conditional Access can require MFA in specified scenarios, and security defaults apply in tenants that do not use Conditional Access. Authenticator passwordless sign-in may require user approval, number matching, and a device PIN or biometric. These requirements depend on tenant and user configuration; a headless process cannot be assumed to satisfy them unattended. Complete challenges through an authorized supported method or ask your administrator about an approved test arrangement. See Microsoft’s guidance on per-user multifactor authentication and passwordless sign-in with Authenticator.

State handling, reliability, and cost
- Refresh deliberately: state is not a permanent credential. When the app redirects to login or the authenticated-page check fails, rerun the approved interactive sign-in and save a fresh state file.
- Check the right signal: use an app-specific element or URL condition that distinguishes the target signed-in view from login, consent, loading, and error screens.
- Scope state carefully: use the correct app origin and account. Redirects, domain scope, expiration, and app-specific storage behavior can all affect whether restored state is accepted.
- Limit exposure: treat the file as a credential. Store it only where the automation needs it and avoid sharing it between unrelated accounts or environments.
- Budget for interactive work: the repeatable headless step depends on state remaining valid. When a policy or expiration requires a new challenge, an authorized interactive refresh may be necessary.
For comparable captures, run against the same browser and operating environment and wait for the relevant content to settle. This does not guarantee pixel-identical output; app data and rendering can vary.

Troubleshooting common failures
The screenshot contains the Microsoft sign-in page
State may have been saved before sign-in finished, omitted from the new context, saved for a different account or origin, or expired. In the interactive script, wait for an app-specific authenticated element before saving. In the capture script, confirm the state path is correct and keep the success-element check so the run fails rather than silently saving the wrong page.
The flow stops at MFA or passwordless approval
This is an interactive requirement determined by the configured authentication method and tenant policy, not a screenshot failure to work around. Complete the challenge through an authorized method or request an approved testing arrangement from the tenant administrator.

The app redirects even though state was restored
Check that you are opening the expected URL, that the saved state belongs to the matching app origin and account, and that it has not expired. Also verify whether the app relies on storage beyond what your saved state contains. Playwright’s documented persistence does not guarantee that an application will accept a snapshot indefinitely.

Captures differ between runs
Check that the same browser and operating environment are used and that capture waits for the target content to settle. Differences may also come from changing app content; a successful authentication check alone does not establish that every page element has finished rendering.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For an Entra-protected app, use it only if the target page is publicly accessible to the service; the API call below does not supply your signed-in browser state or bypass a login. For a URL it can access, one GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can each be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can headless Chrome complete Microsoft Entra MFA by itself?
Not reliably as a general method; MFA and passwordless approval requirements depend on user and tenant configuration and may require interaction.
Can I use this approach for a protected app I do not control?
Only if you are authorized to access and automate that app and can legitimately complete its sign-in flow.
