If YouTube Live rejects the key you use for a gaming stream, first confirm you copied the key for the correct live stream, then replace any saved key that has been reset. Check the server URL and protocol too: a valid key paired with the wrong ingest settings can still fail. YouTube does not document a separate “gaming VOD stream key”; the phrase likely refers to an ordinary live stream key used for a gaming broadcast that may later be available as a replay.
First, identify what “gaming VOD stream key” means
YouTube describes a stream key as the credential an encoder uses to send a feed to the right live stream. It can set a stream type such as Gaming, but the official guidance reviewed does not identify a separate key specifically for gaming VODs. VOD usually means a recording or replay; live ingestion still uses the encoder and stream configuration. Treat this as a regular live-key troubleshooting problem unless your encoder or YouTube screen shows otherwise. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Check the key and connection method first
If you paste a key into your encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Stream to open Live Control Room.
- Find the key for the exact scheduled or current stream you intend to send to. Copy it again rather than relying on an old note or a key saved for another stream.
- Paste the key into the encoder’s stream-key field. If you reset the key, replace the old saved value everywhere that encoder uses it.
- Verify the server or ingest URL and protocol in the encoder against the settings shown for that stream in Live Control Room.
Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. If you lack access, ask an owner or manager to reset it or confirm the intended key. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

If your encoder signs in to YouTube instead
Some software connects through a YouTube sign-in integration without asking you to paste a key. Do not put a stream key into an unrelated field. YouTube advises contacting the software provider’s support team if that integration has a connection problem; also check whether the provider offers an update. Match the ingest URL and protocol
The key and ingest configuration are related but distinct. A correct key does not fix a mismatched server address or protocol, so compare both with the stream’s setup in Live Control Room.

- RTMPS: Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room with the matching key. If the encoder reports an SSL error, check that URL; YouTube also documents port 443 as an optional check.
- HLS: Select HLS in the stream-key protocol settings and follow the URL instructions shown there. YouTube notes that the key may already be included in the HLS URL, so follow the configuration for that protocol rather than adding it blindly.

Confirm the channel can livestream
A key can be correct while the channel is not eligible to go live. Check that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days, and meets YouTube’s stated minimum age of 16 for streamers. If one of these conditions is not met, changing the encoder key will not resolve the eligibility issue. YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors

Use the error message to separate a key failure from a stream failure
Once the encoder attempts to connect, read the error or stream-health message in Live Control Room. An accepted key with a failing feed points to a different problem than a rejected credential.
- Incorrect stream format: YouTube specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. Check the encoder’s output settings if Live Control Room reports a format error.
- Unstable or poor-quality feed: Update the encoder, inspect the local audio and video sources, and check whether the computer is under heavy CPU load.
- Outbound connection trouble: Test the upload path separately from key validity. YouTube recommends planning for 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; that is network capacity guidance, not a requirement that makes a stream key valid.
