A Media Source plays one selected file, so enabling Loop repeats that file. To play several videos in sequence, use VLC Video Source and verify that its playlist contains each intended video. If you already use a playlist-capable source, check its entries, paths, and version before treating the behavior as an OBS bug.
Identify the OBS source that is repeating
In the OBS Sources list, select the item that plays the video and open its properties. Check the source type shown in OBS. The distinction matters: the built-in Media Source is for one file; VLC Video Source is the built-in playlist-capable option described in the OBS Project’s “Media Sources” guide.

If it is a Media Source
A Media Source is not a multi-file playlist. If its Loop control is enabled, it starts the same selected file again when playback ends. To advance among several local videos, replace it with a playlist-capable source rather than looking for a playlist setting in the single-file source.
If it is VLC Video Source
Open the source properties and inspect the playlist itself. There should be a separate entry for every video you expect OBS to play. Check that the entries point to the intended files and that multiple entries are not accidentally pointing to the same path.

If it is Media Playlist Source
Media Playlist Source is a third-party plugin, not the same thing as VLC Video Source. Its release notes document a fix for failure to advance when the next video had the same path as the current one, including a case involving a one-file loop. The notes say plugin version 0.1.0 and later requires OBS 31 or newer. Check the installed plugin and OBS versions against those release notes before applying that fix to your setup; it is not evidence of a general VLC Video Source defect.
Fix a VLC Video Source playlist that does not advance
- Confirm the source type. In the Sources list, open the selected source’s properties and verify it is VLC Video Source, not Media Source.
- Inspect every playlist entry. Confirm that all intended videos appear as separate items. Check the paths for typos, missing files, or repeated paths that point to the same video.
- Check playlist looping and shuffle. VLC Video Source’s Loop Playlist setting governs what happens after the list runs out of media files: it restarts the list. The OBS guide lists Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Looping does not add items to the list and does not turn a single-file Media Source into a playlist.
- Make sure VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed for the source to appear. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Review Visibility Behaviour if the source is hidden. VLC Video Source can stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playing when it becomes hidden. This setting affects playback while the source is not visible; it does not change which files are in the playlist or what Loop Playlist does.
- Test manual advancement. OBS’s VLC source implementation registers next and previous playlist hotkeys. If manual next advances but automatic playback does not, record that result as a diagnostic clue. It does not, by itself, identify the cause.
Check plugin versions and the .xspf case separately
If you use Media Playlist Source, note the plugin version and OBS version before troubleshooting the same-path issue described in its release notes. Apply the release-note guidance only to that plugin and within its stated OBS compatibility.

A report titled “VLC Video Source only playing one .xspf file instead of multiple from a directory?” describes a user’s OBS 27.2.4 setup in 2022. It is a historical report about an .xspf file and a directory; it does not establish that current OBS versions have a general VLC playlist bug. If your playlist entries are .xspf files rather than video files, record that detail when diagnosing the problem instead of assuming the report explains your setup.

What to collect if the same video still repeats
The cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. Before asking for help, record:

- Your OBS version and operating system.
- The exact source type shown in the source properties.
- Your VLC version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, if you use VLC Video Source.
- The number of playlist entries and whether they are video files or .xspf files.
- Whether any entries share the same path, and whether manual next advances.
- The source’s loop, shuffle, and Visibility Behaviour settings.
- A current OBS log and the point at which the playlist repeats.
