Website Screenshot API Comparison: Features, Limits, and Rendering

A developer-focused comparison of screenshot APIs covering request modes, synchronous and async delivery, full-page and element capture, rendering controls, and documented limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a hosted website screenshot API, start with the request and delivery model your application needs: ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try if you want clean captures and charges only for clean shots; among ScreenshotOne, Browserless, and Urlbox, the key differences are GET versus POST support, synchronous versus asynchronous delivery, and controls for full-page, element, and lazy-loaded content. The providers document different capabilities, but the available material does not establish a consistent basis for ranking them on price, speed, reliability, or pixel fidelity.

How to choose a screenshot API

These services turn a URL or supplied HTML into an image or, depending on the provider and options, another representation. Common uses include product thumbnails, page previews, visual monitoring, and batch rendering. Choose by matching the integration to the job rather than assuming that similarly named options behave identically.

  • One-off or request-time captures: a synchronous request that returns image bytes can be straightforward to integrate.
  • Batch work or longer renders: an asynchronous job, polling, or webhook workflow can let your system process results separately from the initial request.
  • Specific page regions: check whether the API supports a CSS selector, a clipping rectangle, or both.
  • Long or dynamic pages: confirm how full-page capture and lazy-loaded content are handled; a page may need scrolling or additional wait time.
  • Operational constraints: verify current plan quotas, rate limits, input-size ceilings, and regional requirements directly with the vendor.

Provider documentation describes the capabilities below; it is not a side-by-side test. The vendors may define full-page capture differently, and plan restrictions may not appear on the technical pages reviewed.

At a glance: request and response workflows

Service Request modes Response and delivery Capture scope and controls
ScreenshotNeo One GET request to the screenshot API with a URL. Returns a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. Response headers say whether the page was clean, failed, cached, or otherwise classified and whether it was billed. 63 options include full-page and selector capture, viewport and device controls, lazy-image loading, page-state controls, and asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks.
ScreenshotOne GET and POST; POST options are supplied as JSON. Output depends on options and can include images or other supported representations. Binary-by-format responses are not stored by default unless caching, storage, or related options are enabled. Full-page, selector, viewport and device-related settings, plus extensive rendering controls.
Browserless POST to /screenshot, with a URL or inline HTML input. Documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP image responses with Puppeteer-style settings. Full-page, selector capture, clipping, viewport, device scale factor, and scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded material.
Urlbox Synchronous GET render links; POST supports synchronous or asynchronous workflows. GET returns binary image data. POST can return JSON with screenshot URLs and optional metadata, Markdown, or hydrated HTML URLs. Responsive, full-page, and selector-based capture, along with options such as delays and hiding overlays or banners.

ScreenshotNeo: the clean-capture alternative to try first

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It is the first alternative to try when clean output matters: before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each of those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scaling, PDF settings, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, selector and network-idle waits, request blocking, headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make migration easier. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

One-call example

Replace YOUR_API_KEY and the target URL. The request below saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and output behavior.

How request and delivery models differ

GET and POST requests

ScreenshotOne documents both GET and POST, with POST options in a JSON body. Browserless documents a POST request to /screenshot. It accepts either a URL or inline HTML; when sending HTML, its documentation cautions against including url in the same request. Urlbox supports synchronous GET render links and POST. ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in a single GET request.

Synchronous results versus jobs

A synchronous flow keeps the result tied to the request: the caller waits for the render and receives the output. That is convenient for a preview generated on demand, but your application must account for rendering time and failures in its request path. Urlbox also documents asynchronous POST workflows, with results available by polling or webhook; the vendor says this enables parallel renders. ScreenshotNeo supports asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, which can suit work that should not block an interactive request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the precise response format before wiring a client. ScreenshotOne’s output depends on options; Browserless documents image responses; Urlbox’s GET returns image bytes while POST can return JSON with result URLs and optional page data. ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF, with verdict and billing information in response headers.

Full-page, element, and viewport rendering

Full-page capture and lazy-loaded material

All four document ways to capture beyond the initial viewport, but the available descriptions are not interchangeable guarantees of identical output. ScreenshotOne offers full-page capture and explains that scrolling can trigger lazy-loaded content. Its guide notes that changing rendering behavior, reducing motion, or waiting longer can improve full-page quality, potentially at a performance cost. Browserless documents full-page mode and recommends scrollPage: true for lazy-loaded content, optionally alongside full-page mode. Urlbox advertises full-page capture. ScreenshotNeo offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Capturing one element or region

For a single component rather than an entire page, ScreenshotOne documents selector capture; Browserless accepts an element selector, waits for it, then crops to its bounding box, and also documents a clip region. Urlbox advertises CSS-selector element capture. ScreenshotNeo supports capture by CSS selector. If a page has multiple matching elements, confirm how a provider resolves the selector and test the exact markup your application will encounter.

Viewport, device, and output choices

ScreenshotOne documents viewport settings and format choices including PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, PDF, HTML, and Markdown. Browserless documents viewport, device scale factor, and PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Urlbox advertises responsive rendering and a broad set of render options; its product page claims more than 100 image-rendering options, a vendor count that has not been independently audited here. ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, PDF, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, and PDF controls such as paper size, margins, landscape, and page ranges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overlays, page state, and resource handling

ScreenshotOne documents controls for motion, dark mode, custom scripts and styles, and GPU rendering. GPU rendering is disabled by default, limited by its documentation to top-tier paid plans, and not guaranteed: it may fall back to software rendering. Browserless documents Puppeteer-style screenshot and navigation settings, resource rejection, and the ability to continue after some errors. Urlbox’s product and documentation pages describe options including delay and hiding overlays, popups, or banners. ScreenshotNeo can accept consent banners before capture, remove supported popups and chat widgets, and provides options for dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, hiding selectors, and blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.

Published limits, prices, and what is not comparable

The reviewed technical pages state one directly comparable input ceiling: ScreenshotOne’s maximum POST body is 100 MiB, according to its current official documentation observed on October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication date. ScreenshotOne recommends hosting larger HTML or Markdown inputs and passing a URL instead. The same provider’s homepage advertised 100 free screenshots per month when observed on October 3, 2026; this is a live offer, not an established permanent allowance.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

The reviewed pages do not establish comparable plan tiers, prices, monthly quotas across ScreenshotOne, Browserless, and Urlbox, request-rate limits, regional coverage, or standardized latency and fidelity benchmarks. The Browserless and Urlbox pages reviewed did not state a comparable request-body ceiling. Absence of a stated ceiling on those pages does not mean there is no limit. Check each provider’s current plan and limit documentation before committing capacity or cost assumptions. ScreenshotNeo’s stated plan prices and allowances are listed above; no cross-provider price ranking is supported by the available data.

Selection checklist for a production integration

  1. Choose the request shape: decide whether your client needs GET, POST with JSON, inline HTML input, or an asynchronous job.
  2. Specify the result: confirm binary image versus JSON or a URL, and verify which formats and optional metadata your downstream system can consume.
  3. Define capture scope: decide between viewport, full page, CSS selector, and clipping region; check whether off-screen lazy content needs scrolling.
  4. Reproduce the page state: identify waits, cookies, headers, user agent, viewport, dark mode, motion, geolocation, or other controls the target requires.
  5. Check input and operational limits: verify payload ceiling, plan quota, rate limit, timeout behavior, and regional needs from current vendor documentation.
  6. Plan failure handling and cost: determine what the API returns for blocked, blank, timed-out, or failed pages, whether cache hits are charged, and how your service will retry safely.
  7. Validate your actual pages: compare the resulting crops and page states against your application’s requirements. Provider feature descriptions alone do not establish identical rendering or fidelity.

Common integration problems

  • Lazy images or sections are missing: the page may only load them when scrolled into view. For Browserless, use the documented scrollPage: true; for ScreenshotOne, allow for its documented scrolling and waiting controls. Increase wait or adjust capture behavior where the provider supports it.
  • Browserless rejects an inline HTML request: do not send url alongside html when using the documented HTML input mode.
  • An element screenshot is empty or wrong: verify the selector matches the intended element at render time. Browserless waits for its selector before cropping; other providers’ selector resolution details should be checked in their current documentation.
  • ScreenshotOne rejects a large POST: its documented body ceiling is 100 MiB. Host larger HTML or Markdown elsewhere and pass a URL, as its guide recommends.
  • A full-page capture is incomplete or costly in time: long pages, motion, lazy loading, and wait settings can affect completion and quality. ScreenshotOne specifically notes that quality-oriented full-page adjustments may reduce performance.
  • Unexpected rendering differences: inspect viewport, device scale, fonts and page readiness, then verify provider-specific defaults and options. No standardized fidelity benchmark in the reviewed materials predicts which service will match a particular browser output best.
  • Unclear usage charges: consult current plan and limit pages and inspect the provider’s response semantics. ScreenshotNeo explicitly returns verdict and billing headers; the reviewed comparison sources do not establish equivalent billing semantics for the other providers.
