Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep a pre-recorded video at 24 fps when sending it to YouTube Live if your encoder supports that output. YouTube does not publish a dedicated 24 fps live-bitrate row: use the published 30 fps figure for the same resolution and codec as a practical reference, not as a 24 fps-specific prescription. Set a constant bitrate (CBR), use a two-second keyframe interval, prefer RTMPS, and test with representative motion and audio before going live.
Do you need to convert 24 fps video to 30 fps?
Usually, no. If the recording is 24 fps and your encoder can send 24 fps, retaining the source frame rate avoids an unnecessary frame-rate conversion. YouTube lists 24 fps as a common frame rate for uploaded content and recommends uploading at the rate at which it was recorded, but those are upload recommendations—not a separate live-ingest bitrate specification. YouTube’s live guidance allows up to 60 fps and publishes bitrate tiers for 30 fps and 60 fps, not 24 fps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and its separate upload encoding recommendations.

If your encoder cannot output 24 fps, choose a supported frame rate and check the result in a test. Converting 24 fps to 30 fps may change frame cadence; it does not unlock a special YouTube bitrate or guarantee better quality. Judge the preview and playback using the actual recording, especially if it contains pans, movement, or fine detail.
What bitrate should you use for 24 fps on YouTube Live?
YouTube does not provide a 24 fps-specific live bitrate. The figures below are YouTube’s published 30 fps live-ingest recommendations, used only as a resolution-and-codec reference for a 24 fps stream. They are not 24 fps measurements or guarantees. The guidance page does not display a publication year, so check it for updates before relying on exact values.

| Resolution | Codec group | Published 30 fps minimum | Published 30 fps recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1440p | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p | H.264 | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 2160p | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p | H.264 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
Start with the recommended figure for the closest matching resolution and codec if your connection can sustain it. If it cannot, lower the bitrate or resolution rather than choosing a setting that causes an unstable stream. Video with more movement or detail can be harder to encode cleanly; make the final choice by testing your own footage and watching YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages.
These figures concern live ingest. Do not substitute YouTube’s separate upload bitrate guidance for a live-stream bitrate: uploading a video file and sending an encoder feed to YouTube Live are different workflows.

Recommended encoder settings
- Frame rate: 24 fps when supported and appropriate for the source. YouTube’s live settings support up to 60 fps, but do not specify a 24 fps bitrate tier.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, as supported by your encoder and workflow.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Connection: RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS where available for encrypted delivery to YouTube.
- Advanced video settings: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
These are YouTube’s general live encoder recommendations; available options and labels vary by encoder. Do not assume an encoder setting exists if your software or hardware does not expose it.

Set up and test the stream
- Configure the encoder output. Select the source resolution and 24 fps output if supported. Choose an allowed codec and CBR. YouTube Live Control Room generally detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically.
- Choose a bitrate reference. Use the 30 fps row above for your resolution and codec as a starting reference only. Confirm that your actual upload connection can sustain the total stream bitrate.
- Set keyframes and delivery. Configure a two-second keyframe interval, never over four seconds, and select RTMPS if your encoder offers it.
- Check bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Treat that as capacity above the total stream bitrate, not as extra bitrate to add to the encoder setting. If the connection varies or other devices are uploading, reduce the stream bitrate or resolution until the feed is stable.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and video motion similar to the planned stream. Inspect the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any warnings before relying on the setup. YouTube’s general tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; these are planning recommendations, not technical prerequisites.
YouTube’s instructions to test with representative audio and movement are on its live encoder settings page; the headroom and event-timing advice appears in its streaming tips.

Software or a hardware encoder?
YouTube supports both encoder software and standalone hardware. A hardware encoder is optional for a pre-recorded 24 fps relay; 24 fps alone does not require dedicated hardware. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events, while noting that equipment a creator already has may be enough to get started. Its verified encoder list identifies products that are not made by YouTube. This guidance does not establish that one particular model is best.

- The stream looks choppy after conversion: Test the source at its original 24 fps if the encoder supports it. Compare a representative section in the preview rather than assuming conversion to 30 fps improves motion.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health or the feed drops: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the total bitrate with the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate or resolution if necessary, and check for competing uploads on the same connection.
- The image is soft, blocky, or breaks up during motion: Confirm resolution, codec, and bitrate are set as intended. Compare against YouTube’s corresponding 30 fps reference row, then test realistic movement; the published row is not a 24 fps guarantee.
- The encoder preview does not show the expected resolution or frame rate: Confirm the encoder’s output settings and wait for Live Control Room to detect them. YouTube generally detects these values automatically, but the exact controls depend on the encoder.
- Keyframe or delivery settings are flagged: Set a two-second keyframe interval, keep it at or below four seconds, and use RTMPS if supported.
