Use ImageMagick’s magick compare to create a visual difference map and, optionally, a numeric score for two screenshots. For results you can trust, capture both page states in the same browser at matching dimensions and settings, then choose a comparison metric that fits your goal.
Prepare screenshots that can be compared fairly
ImageMagick compares image pixels; it cannot tell whether a visible change is intended or whether the page is semantically correct. The capture setup therefore matters as much as the command.

- Capture both versions in the same browser and at the same viewport dimensions, browser zoom, scroll position, and interaction state.
- Use lossless PNG captures when possible. JPEG compression can introduce pixel differences unrelated to a website change.
- Keep crop dimensions and page offsets consistent. Cropping or repaging can shift the coordinates being compared.
Create a difference image and RMSE score
With ImageMagick installed, run:
magick compare -metric RMSE before.png after.png difference.png
This compares the images and writes an annotated difference image to difference.png. In ImageMagick’s example, red highlights affected pixels and white deemphasizes untouched pixels. The RMSE metric summarizes average channel error, with larger errors weighted more heavily. Metric details are written to standard error, so they may appear in the terminal even though the difference image is saved as a file. See ImageMagick’s compare documentation.

Use null: as the output when you need the metric but not an image artifact:

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
magick compare -metric RMSE before.png after.png null:
For debugging or review, keep the difference image as well as the score: a single number does not identify where or why pixels changed.
Choose a metric for the question you are asking
| Metric family | What it tells you | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| AE / PDC | Counts pixel differences; -fuzz can ignore small color variations. |
Use when you want to know whether pixels changed or how many did. |
| MAE / RMSE | Summarizes average channel error; RMSE emphasizes larger errors. | Use to track a consistent numeric signal across runs, alongside retained image artifacts. |
| SSIM / DSSIM | Measures structural similarity or dissimilarity. | Use when structural resemblance matters more than exact pixel equality. |
| NCC / PSNR | Provides correlation or signal-quality measures with their own interpretations and perfect-match conventions. | Use only when their interpretation fits your workflow; do not compare their raw scores directly with other metrics. |
ImageMagick defines a perfect comparison as difference 0 for most difference metrics, while NCC uses 1 for a perfect match. Keep the metric, ImageMagick version, and fuzz setting consistent between runs, and establish thresholds using representative captures from your own site rather than assuming a universal pass score. See the ImageMagick command-line options and defines documentation.

Understand alignment, dimensions, and command results
Unless subimage search is enabled, ImageMagick compares pixels directly from the images’ page offsets, typically their top-left corners. As its documentation puts it: “If the -subimage-search option is not enabled, ImageMagick performs a direct pixel-by-pixel comparison between the two images, starting from their page offset, typically the top-left corners.” See ImageMagick’s compare documentation.
If image sizes differ, the smaller image is aligned with the larger one and the extra area is handled as virtual pixels; that can affect the metric. For screenshot regression, matching capture and crop dimensions is usually clearer than relying on virtual-pixel behavior. To limit comparison to authentic pixels, ImageMagick documents -define compare:virtual-pixels=false. Check image dimensions and offsets if a result looks unexpectedly large. Related examples are in ImageMagick’s image-comparing examples.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
The compare command returns 2 on error, 0 when images are similar, and a value between 0 and 1 when they are not similar. Interpret that status alongside the selected metric: the status is not a substitute for choosing a useful metric or validating your own threshold.
Automate visual regression checks responsibly
- Capture a known-good baseline and a new page state with the same browser, viewport, zoom, scroll position, and interaction state.
- Save both captures as lossless PNGs where possible and check that dimensions and offsets align.
- Run
magick comparewith the same metric and fuzz setting used by prior runs. - Record the score and inspect the difference image when a check flags a change.
- Set and validate a project-specific threshold against repeated representative captures. Small anti-aliasing or rendering variations can create many exact pixel mismatches even when a page appears unchanged.
For a useful automated signal, keep the metric stable and retain the image artifact for diagnosis. A scalar score can show that two runs differ; it cannot determine whether the difference is a bug.

Troubleshoot unexpected comparisons
- Nearly everything appears different: confirm matching viewport and crop dimensions, browser zoom, scroll position, interaction state, and page offsets. Lossy compression can also add unrelated changes.
- A few rendering variations trigger many mismatches: exact pixel checks are sensitive to anti-aliasing and other small color changes. For AE/PDC, test an appropriate
-fuzzsetting on representative pages; calibrate rather than treating any value as universal. - The metric changes after a resize or crop: unequal sizes and offsets alter direct pixel alignment and virtual-pixel handling. Align the captures first; consider
-define compare:virtual-pixels=falseonly when authentic-pixel comparison is what you intend. - A score seems hard to interpret: confirm which metric produced it and retain the difference map. Scores from different metric families do not share one scale or meaning.
- The command reports an error: the documented error return is
2. Check that both input paths are valid images and that the output destination is writable.
