What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First identify which OBS counter is rising: dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube ingest, while an encoding overloaded warning means OBS cannot render or encode fast enough. These are different problems and need different fixes. Check OBS Stats, its logs, and YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing settings.
Diagnose dropped frames versus encoding overload
OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. An encoding-overload warning instead points to performance: OBS is not keeping up with rendering or encoding. OBS describes dropped frames as unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself in its stream connection troubleshooting guide.

- If the dropped-frames counter rises while OBS is not reporting encoding overload, investigate bitrate and the VPS-to-YouTube network path.
- If OBS reports encoding overload, reduce rendering and encoding workload first.
- If both appear, address them as separate issues: a lower output workload may ease CPU demand, while a lower sustainable bitrate may help the connection.
Use the OBS log and YouTube stream-health messages as evidence, not a guessed preset. A VPS provider, CPU allocation, GPU access, OBS version, stream settings, and route to YouTube ingest are not specified here, so no single cause or tested configuration can be assumed.

Lower resolution or frame rate
When encoding or rendering is overloaded, lower the output resolution, the frame rate, or both. Each reduction gives OBS less work to render and encode. Choose a target that suits the content and the VPS’s measured capacity rather than preserving a resolution or frame rate the instance cannot sustain.

Simplify scenes and sources
Remove or simplify sources and scene elements that are not needed for the stream. This reduces rendering work before encoding. Test with the actual scenes you plan to use: a simple test scene may not reveal overload from a more complex live layout.
Tune x264 cautiously
For x264 software encoding, OBS documents veryfast as its baseline CPU-usage preset. On a CPU-limited VPS, moving toward a faster preset can reduce CPU demand, but may trade off image quality. The result depends on the CPU allocation and workload, so treat preset changes as a test path, not a guaranteed fix. Change one setting at a time and check OBS Stats and the resulting stream.

Use hardware encoding only if the VPS exposes it
A compatible encoder-capable GPU may move encoding work off the CPU, but only if the VPS actually exposes that hardware to OBS and the installed drivers support it. Generic OBS documentation cannot establish what a particular instance provides. Check the provider’s instance details, guest operating system, drivers, and OBS encoder list before selecting NVENC or another hardware encoder; do not assume a GPU encoder is available merely because the VPS is hosted on GPU-capable hardware.

Set YouTube Live encoder parameters
YouTube’s live encoder settings specify CBR rate control and a two-second keyframe interval. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.

| Setting | What to use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Rate control | CBR | Set constant bitrate in the selected OBS encoder. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. |
| Bitrate | Use YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. | Confirm that the VPS’s route to the selected YouTube ingest can sustain it. |
| Codec | Choose among the options supported by your OBS setup and YouTube’s current guidance. | Bitrate recommendations differ for H.264, AV1, and H.265; consult YouTube’s current table rather than applying an H.264 figure to another codec. |
For context, YouTube’s current help table recommends H.264 at 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those are platform recommendations, not measurements of an Indian VPS or its route. The page does not state a publication date, and the figures may change.
Separate encoder capacity from network capacity
If the dropped-frames counter is the problem, compare the configured bitrate with what the VPS can sustain to YouTube ingest over the actual route. The fact that a server is in India does not establish its available upload capacity or route stability. No India-specific route performance is established here; test the specific instance and ingest path.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate in response to congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce video quality. Use it as a possible way to manage temporary congestion, not as a substitute for diagnosing the route or choosing a sustainable target.
Test changes before going live
- Record a baseline. Note OBS’s dropped-frames counter, any encoding-overload warning, stream-health messages, and the configured output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Reproduce the real workload. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using representative motion, audio, scenes, and sources. YouTube and OBS recommend testing and monitoring before an event.
- Change one variable at a time. For overload, try reducing resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes, or testing a faster x264 preset. For connection drops, investigate bitrate and route sustainability instead of treating it as a CPU setting.
- Observe the result. Check OBS Stats and logs alongside YouTube stream health during the test. Keep a change only if it addresses the relevant symptom without creating an unacceptable quality loss.
- Recheck after material changes. A different scene, output target, encoder, or VPS allocation changes the workload or connection conditions; test that combination again.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely path | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped-frames counter rises; no encoding-overload warning | Connection to YouTube ingest cannot reliably sustain the stream. | Test the VPS route and reduce the bitrate if needed, using YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations as a reference. |
| OBS reports encoding overloaded | Rendering or encoding demand exceeds available performance. | Lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes and sources, or test a faster x264 preset. |
| Overload persists with x264 on a small VPS | Software encoding may still exceed the assigned CPU capacity. | Confirm the instance’s actual resources; use a hardware encoder only if compatible hardware and drivers are accessible to OBS. |
| Dynamic bitrate reduces drops but picture quality falls | OBS is responding to congestion by lowering bitrate. | Investigate the underlying connection and select a sustainable bitrate; dynamic bitrate is not a route repair. |
| Settings appear right but a test still fails | The actual workload, route, or instance may differ from assumptions. | Review OBS logs and YouTube stream health, then isolate encoder workload from connection performance with one change per test. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than operate OBS on the VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not camera streaming.
