To add chapter labels to a saved YouTube class recording, open the video in YouTube Studio, put timestamp-and-title pairs in its description, and save. Start at 00:00, list at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. For a 24/7 feed, first plan for the recording risk: YouTube says a stream over 12 hours may not be captured, so use shorter sessions and keep a local recording backup.
How to add manual chapters to a saved class recording
- Get a saved recording. End the stream or otherwise obtain the video you want to chapter. For a continuous class feed, plan sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording backup; YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
- Open the video in YouTube Studio. Sign in, select Content, choose the saved video, and open its details. YouTube’s video settings instructions cover editing these details on a computer.
- Add timestamp-title pairs to Description. Put one timestamp and its label on each line. Begin at
00:00, then add at least two more timestamps in ascending order. Ensure each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. - Save the video details. Manually added chapters take precedence over automatically generated chapters.
Use actual times and lesson boundaries from the recording. This is a format example only, not a transcript:

To allow automatic chapters where available, open the video’s expanded settings and find Automatic chapters. If you want predictable lesson boundaries, enter them yourself. YouTube says chapter access may require advanced features; chapters may also be unavailable if the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.

What changes when the stream runs 24/7?
A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily preserved as one replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its guidance recommends keeping a local archive. The practical approach is to divide the continuous class feed into saved sessions shorter than 12 hours, retain local copies, then add chapters to each saved video. The under-12-hour session plan is an operational response to YouTube’s stated archive threshold, not a special 24/7 chapter feature.
Live DVR is separate from chapters. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during live playback, but it may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. It does not add chapter labels to the saved replay. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshooting chapter labels
- Chapters do not appear: check that the first timestamp is
00:00, there are at least three timestamps, they are in ascending order, and each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. Save the video details after editing. - Automatic chapters are missing: automatic generation is not guaranteed for every video. Add manual timestamps if you need dependable lesson navigation.
- Chapter access is unavailable: check whether the channel needs advanced features. Active channel strikes or content YouTube considers inappropriate for some viewers can also affect availability.
- The long live class has no replay: YouTube may not capture a stream that exceeds 12 hours. Use shorter sessions and preserve a local recording rather than relying on a single continuous archive.
- The description will not fit: YouTube’s video settings guidance lists a 5,000-character description limit. Shorten labels and account for all other description text.
