If YouTube drops frames after OBS warns that encoding is overloaded, first check which OBS counter is rising. Encoding lag, rendering lag and network-dropped frames are different problems, and one can occur alongside another. The warning alone does not prove your internet connection is at fault—or identify the encoder as the only cause. Use OBS’s Stats window and log to choose the right fix before changing settings.
Identify which frames OBS is losing
Open OBS’s Stats window and look at the separate counters for rendering lag, encoding lag and dropped frames. You can also review the current session’s log; OBS’s encoding performance guidance and dropped-frames guidance explain these categories. The exact cause on your PC cannot be determined without its counters, log, hardware and settings.

| What you see | What it indicates | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag or skipped frames | OBS is not encoding quickly enough for the configured workload. | Reduce encoding workload and check for competing system load. |
| Rendering lag or stalls | OBS cannot render or composite scenes on time. The GPU may be too busy with the game or other work. | Free GPU capacity and simplify the game or OBS scenes. |
| Network-dropped frames, often attributed to insufficient bandwidth or connection stalls | The connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Check stable upload capacity, bitrate and the network path. |
These signals can overlap. A game can leave too little GPU capacity for OBS while an unstable connection also drops frames. Fix the branch indicated by the counters rather than treating every symptom as “internet lag.”
Fix rendering or encoding overload
Free capacity before lowering quality
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. OBS says this can let Windows reserve some GPU capacity for OBS. This is a Windows-specific suggestion, not a general fix for all systems.
- Check for competing GPU work. Close only applications you recognize and do not need during the stream.
- If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync. If rendering lag persists, lower demanding in-game graphics settings. This can leave GPU capacity for OBS to composite scenes.
Reduce the stream workload if overload continues
- Lower the output resolution or frame rate in OBS. If 60 fps is not working reliably, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes: temporarily disable filters to test, reduce oversized browser-source dimensions, and use static image or media sources when they meet your needs. Large browser sources, animated overlays and demanding filters can add work.
- If your scene collection is unusually large, split it into smaller collections where practical.
- Lowering the base canvas resolution is more disruptive because you may need to resize and reposition sources. Reserve it for serious resource constraints.
Windows users can also check OBS’s version-specific advice about Game Capture multi-adapter compatibility and Game DVR or Game Mode. Confirm your Windows version and the current setting before changing it; behavior and recommendations can vary by version.

Fix network-dropped frames separately
If the network dropped-frame counter rises, OBS identifies an unstable connection to the ingest server or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate as likely causes. This counter does not mean OBS’s encoder warning caused the network issue.
- Compare the bitrate with stable upload capacity. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee. Use a measured, stable upload rate and stay within YouTube’s limits; do not set bitrate from a brief peak alone.
- Lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. This may improve continuity, but can reduce image quality. If you lower bitrate, assess whether the resulting quality is acceptable at your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Try another ingest server if one is available. A test on another streaming service can help distinguish a service-specific problem, but does not by itself establish that your connection is healthy for YouTube.
- Test wired Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Ethernet can help a network problem; it cannot fix encoding overload or GPU rendering lag.
- Check the network path. VPNs, security software, network-priority utilities and outdated network drivers may interfere. OBS specifically names Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC as examples of software that may deprioritize OBS. Review settings before disabling security protections.
- Investigate hardware only when there is evidence of a fault. The path can include the modem, router, cable, network card, switch or extender. OBS advises contacting your ISP if you are unsure before replacing equipment.
OBS also documents Windows-only network optimizations, TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate as conditional troubleshooting options. Dynamic bitrate reduces quality to adapt when the connection falters; it does not repair the underlying connection problem. Check OBS’s current guide and your Windows configuration before trying these options.

Choose YouTube settings your system and connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265 or AV1, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. These are platform configuration recommendations: they do not show whether your PC can render and encode the selected stream on time.

YouTube also lists minimum rates. Check its current live encoder settings for the minimum and recommended bitrate for your exact codec, resolution and frame rate; platform guidance can change. Choose a stream quality your connection can sustain as well as one your PC can encode.
Test before going live and monitor stream health
- Run an upload-speed test and choose a quality that fits your stable connection.
- Test OBS before the event using representative audio and movement, rather than a static scene alone.
- Watch OBS’s per-category counters during the test. If overload appears, change the performance branch; if network drops rise, investigate the connection branch.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while live. YouTube recommends checking them during the event.
A test is useful only if it resembles the real stream: a quiet scene may not reveal the load from gameplay, browser sources, filters or animated overlays.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag continues after OBS is opened as administrator | Encoding workload or other system load | Reduce output resolution or frame rate and check competing applications. |
| Rendering lag appears while a game is running | GPU capacity shared by OBS and the game | Cap game FPS or enable V-Sync; then reduce game graphics if needed. |
| Network-dropped frames rise while encoding and rendering counters remain steady | Upload capacity, Wi-Fi, ingest route or network software | Compare bitrate with stable upload, test Ethernet and review VPN or priority utilities. |
| Both rendering or encoding lag and network drops rise | More than one bottleneck may be present | Address the performance and network branches separately, changing one thing at a time. |
| Lower bitrate reduces network drops but picture quality becomes unacceptable | The chosen quality may exceed the connection’s reliable capacity | Consider a lower resolution or frame rate and recheck YouTube’s recommendation for that configuration. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube 24/7, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS and a computer running: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it accepts your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
