How do I check whether a YouTube stream drop is caused by a CGNAT timeout in India? Start by recording the exact drop time and YouTube Live Control Room status, then check your encoder, local recording and connection. A stream dropping—even after a repeatable number of minutes—does not by itself prove a CGNAT timeout. You need evidence that separates an encoder or platform problem from a network-path failure, and evidence of carrier NAT before you can ask whether its mapping timer is involved.
What would count as evidence of a CGNAT timeout?
There are two separate questions: whether your connection is behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), and whether a NAT mapping timeout caused a particular interruption. Evidence for the first does not establish the second.

A mismatch between your router’s WAN IPv4 address and the public IPv4 address visible to an external service can indicate upstream NAT. A private or shared-range WAN address is another clue. But the mismatch alone does not identify where that NAT is located, confirm your ISP’s setup, reveal a timer value or show that a timeout caused the stream to stop. Ask your ISP whether your connection uses CGNAT; provider confirmation supports the carrier-NAT finding, but you still need evidence tied to the interruption.
The IETF’s RFC 4787 (January 2007) says UDP mapping timeout implementations vary, including in how mappings are refreshed. Its guidance says a UDP mapping timer must not expire in less than two minutes except for a specified well-known-port exception, and recommends a default of five minutes or more. Those are standards statements, not measurements of an Indian ISP’s configuration. They do not establish which protocol or flow your YouTube stream used.

How to investigate a drop, step by step
- Record the event. Note the date, local time and time zone, how long the stream had been running, the exact status or error text in YouTube Live Control Room, and whether viewers lost the feed too. YouTube’s stream-health information and error messages can help connect a symptom to its time. Preserve a screenshot or written copy if available.
- Check the encoder and source. Review your encoder’s log and statistics for dropped frames, disconnects or encoder errors. Check CPU load and whether your audio and video sources were working. Inspect the local recording: corruption, missing sections or a recording that stops at the same time can point toward a source or encoder problem. YouTube advises checking encoder health and the local archive; OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network issues between the computer and the ingest server. Neither symptom identifies CGNAT specifically.
- Test upload capacity and settings. Run a sustained upload test under conditions similar to your stream, including representative household or office network use. Compare available upload capacity with your configured stream bitrate, then try a conservative bitrate and other settings YouTube identifies as suitable for your connection. Keep the settings consistent between comparison runs. A short speed test is only a snapshot; it does not establish that the connection stayed stable throughout a longer stream. YouTube publishes encoder-setting, bitrate and protocol guidance, but the suitable setting depends on your connection and stream configuration.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Repeat a controlled test over a wired connection if practical, keeping the encoder, bitrate, destination and content as similar as you can. Avoid other heavy uploads during the comparison and record whether the failure changes. This can help isolate Wi-Fi interference or local congestion, but it is not a CGNAT test. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one way to make a wired comparison; it is not a guaranteed fix or a CGNAT detector.
- Try another access network, if available. Run a short test using a different ISP or a mobile hotspot with the same encoder, settings and YouTube destination. If the original connection fails and the alternate one does not, the original network path becomes more suspect. The result still cannot distinguish CGNAT from congestion, routing, packet loss, Wi-Fi, firewall behavior or ISP policy.
- Check whether your connection uses CGNAT. Compare the router’s WAN IPv4 address with the public IPv4 address shown by an external service. If they differ, or the router has a private or shared-range WAN address, ask your ISP whether your account is behind CGNAT. Ask whether a public IPv4 option is available. RFC 6888 describes carrier-grade NAT requirements; it does not identify the setup used by your provider. Do not treat an address mismatch as proof that a mapping timed out.
- Test the timeout hypothesis without assuming the mechanism. During a controlled test, keep the stream active and record the exact elapsed time and any packet loss or session failure. Note whether trouble occurs during continuous traffic or after an idle period. An idle-only failure may make an idle mapping hypothesis more plausible, but it does not prove that this is what happened. Ask the ISP whether it can inspect NAT or session logs for your recorded time window. To establish a particular timeout mechanism, you would need relevant flow and protocol information plus evidence from the provider—not just a repeatable drop time.
- Rule out YouTube notices and policy actions. Check the stream-health message and YouTube Studio dashboard for errors, notices, strikes or copyright-related interruptions. A platform or policy event can interrupt or end a stream without a CGNAT timeout. YouTube documents both stream-health errors and copyright or policy actions as things to check.
How to interpret what you find
| Observation | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| The local archive is corrupt, encoder errors appear, or CPU load is excessive. | Investigate the source, encoder and computer first, following YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance. | A CGNAT timeout. |
| The encoder appears healthy, but OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnection. | Investigate route stability, upload headroom and the ISP. OBS describes these as network-path symptoms. | Which part of the path failed; congestion, packet loss, Wi-Fi, firewall behavior, routing and NAT remain possible. |
| Several services fail at the same time. | An access-path problem becomes more likely. | A CGNAT timeout specifically. |
| Only YouTube ingest fails. | Check YouTube’s status or error messages, ingest selection, encoder configuration and platform notices. | That your ISP is at fault. |
| Your router’s WAN IPv4 differs from the externally visible IPv4, and your ISP confirms carrier NAT. | You have support for the claim that your connection is behind CGNAT. | The timer value or the cause of a particular interruption. |
| A failure repeats at about the same elapsed time. | You have a repeatable pattern worth sharing with your ISP, along with timestamps and test conditions. | A timeout mechanism. The flow, protocol and provider-side evidence still matter. |
What to ask your ISP
Give support the event timestamp with time zone, the duration, the YouTube status or error text, encoder log details and the results of wired, Wi-Fi or alternate-network tests. Ask specific questions:
- Is this connection behind CGNAT, and can you confirm that for the relevant service or account?
- Can you inspect NAT or session logs for the recorded time window and check for a mapping or session expiry?
- Can you tell whether the observed issue matches a provider-side event, or whether a public IPv4 option is available?
Ask for a finding tied to the matching time window. A general confirmation that CGNAT is in use answers where carrier NAT exists, not whether it caused this drop. No India-wide consumer-ISP prevalence figure or provider-specific YouTube timeout duration is established here, so do not infer one from the fact that a stream stopped.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your aim is to keep an uploaded video looping on YouTube while you investigate a home-network problem, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. This changes the source of the stream; it does not diagnose or prove that CGNAT caused an earlier drop.
