YouTube Live Stream Freezing on a Low-End PC? Reduce OBS Encoding Load

A practical OBS troubleshooting sequence for low-end PCs: identify rendering or encoding lag, reduce workload safely, and separate PC performance from network buffering.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube live stream freezes while using OBS on a low-end PC, first find out whether OBS is reporting rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames. They point to different problems: reduce GPU and encoding work for the first two; investigate upload stability and bitrate for dropped frames or viewer buffering. There is no single OBS setting that fixes every PC, so make one change at a time and test before going live.

Why does a YouTube live stream freeze on a low-end PC?

“Freezing” describes what you see, not the cause. OBS can fall behind while rendering a scene or encoding video, while a network problem can prevent frames from reaching YouTube reliably. Viewers may also report buffering even when the PC’s encoder is keeping up. OBS explains that compositing and rendering a scene use GPU resources; a GPU bottleneck can affect OBS even if a game still appears responsive. (OBS Project, Encoding Performance Troubleshooting, 2021-06-12.)

  • Rendering lag: OBS cannot render scenes quickly enough, often because the GPU is busy.
  • Encoding lag: the selected encoder cannot encode frames at the required rate.
  • Dropped frames: frames are not reaching the streaming service reliably; check the connection and bitrate rather than assuming the CPU is the cause.
  • Viewer-side buffering: viewers experience interruptions. Check OBS’s dropped-frame and performance indicators to distinguish a network issue from a rendering or encoding problem.

Diagnose the problem in OBS before changing settings

  1. Start a short test stream, preferably private or unlisted if those options are available for your channel. OBS recommends testing before a real live session. See its OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  2. Open View > Stats in OBS and watch the rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames indicators while the problem occurs. Note which counter rises; do not treat all three as the same fault.
  3. Save the OBS log from that session and review it alongside the Stats window. The log and the performance counters can help identify whether the PC, encoder, or connection is falling behind.
  4. Record the OBS version, CPU and GPU (including any integrated GPU), encoder selected, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, and whether the stream is a game or another workload. These details matter: OBS says system compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming performance, and requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. (OBS Project, System Requirements, 2021-08-25.)

Reduce rendering and encoding load, one change at a time

When Stats points to rendering or encoding lag, change the workload OBS and the PC must handle. After each adjustment, repeat the same short test so you can tell what helped.

1. Lower output resolution or frame rate

In OBS, open Settings > Video. Reduce the output resolution, the frame rate, or both, then test. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS specifically recommends trying 30 fps. Lower resolution and lower frame rate both reduce work, but the right trade-off depends on what you stream and what remains visually acceptable. Avoid changing several settings at once, or you will not know which change made a difference.

2. Free GPU capacity

If rendering lag is rising, reduce work competing for GPU time:

  • Lower the game’s graphics settings, and cap its frame rate at the display refresh rate or enable V-Sync.
  • Close GPU-intensive programs you opened and do not need during the stream.
  • Simplify OBS scenes; remove sources you are not using, disable unnecessary filters, and reduce browser sources where possible.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS recommends this as a way to let OBS use GPU capacity that Windows might otherwise reserve for other work.

Reducing the base canvas can affect the whole scene setup; OBS advises treating it as a more disruptive measure for cases where GPU resources are severely constrained. Its encoding performance guidance covers these adjustments.

3. Try a compatible hardware encoder

In OBS, open Settings > Output and check the available encoder options. If the PC has a compatible hardware encoder, try it and run another test. Hardware encoding uses a specialized component rather than relying entirely on CPU encoding, which may help performance. The options depend on the PC and drivers: NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync each have hardware and compatibility requirements. Do not assume a particular option is available or best for your machine. OBS also notes that older hardware encoder generations can deliver lower quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. See Hardware Encoding (OBS Project, 2022-01-11).

If you are using NVIDIA NVENC, options and behavior can depend on the OBS version. OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options (31.0) guide is specific to version 31.0 and dated 2024-08-21; do not assume its version-specific options appear in other OBS releases.

4. Use Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point

OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help choose initial settings for the machine and streaming use case. Treat its result as a starting point, not a guarantee: run a test with your actual scene and workload. OBS’s overview guide recommends testing before you stream.

How to tell an encoding problem from buffering

If OBS reports dropped frames or viewers report buffering while its rendering and encoding indicators remain stable, investigate the network separately. Measure sustained upload performance under conditions similar to your stream, then choose a bitrate that fits both that connection and YouTube’s current guidance. OBS says the suitable streaming bitrate depends on upload speed and the service, and that a lower bitrate can improve reach for viewers with limited connections. Its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide (2021-06-09) directs streamers to examine dropped frames and platform recommendations.

Do not use a bitrate number as a cure for confirmed rendering or encoding lag, and do not infer that an Indian connection needs one universal bitrate. The available evidence does not establish a current YouTube Live bitrate limit or ingest setting for every channel. Check YouTube’s current guidance for your stream and use OBS’s indicators to determine whether the actual symptom is network-related.

Choose the adjustment that matches the bottleneck

Adjustment Best fit Trade-off or check
Reduce resolution Rendering or encoding demand is too high. Picture detail decreases; test whether the result suits the content.
Reduce frame rate, such as trying 30 fps when 60 fps is unstable Rendering or encoding demand is too high. Motion looks less fluid; compare with the needs of the stream.
Simplify scenes, filters, and browser sources GPU rendering pressure, especially with complex scenes. Some overlays or effects may need to be removed or simplified.
Lower game graphics or cap game FPS The game is competing with OBS for GPU time. Gameplay presentation changes; test a cap or graphics adjustment that remains acceptable.
Try a compatible hardware encoder Encoding load is high and supported hardware is available. Availability and quality depend on encoder generation, hardware, and drivers.
Check sustained upload and adjust bitrate to service guidance Dropped frames or viewer buffering with stable OBS rendering and encoding indicators. Bitrate must suit both the connection and platform; there is no universal figure established here.

Common problems and what to try next

Game runs smoothly, but OBS says it cannot keep up

A responsive game does not prove OBS has enough GPU time. Check whether rendering lag is increasing, then cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, lower game graphics, and simplify OBS scenes. If 60 fps output is unstable, test 30 fps.

OBS says encoding lag is rising

Lower output resolution or frame rate, then try a hardware encoder if one is supported by the PC. Check one adjustment at a time and inspect Stats during a repeat test; there is no evidence-backed universal encoder or preset for all low-end PCs.

OBS counters look healthy, but viewers see buffering

Check dropped frames and sustained upload performance. Review the bitrate against current YouTube guidance and the connection you can maintain; do not respond by changing encoder settings unless OBS shows an encoding problem.

A hardware encoder option is missing or performs poorly

Hardware encoder availability depends on installed hardware, generation, and drivers. Check which CPU or GPU the PC actually has and whether its drivers support the encoder before choosing it. If the option is unavailable, use another compatible encoder and lower the workload until tests are stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changes help briefly, then the stream freezes again

Repeat a test that matches the real stream length and workload, and keep Stats and the log. A short test that does not reproduce the game, scene, or other load may not reveal the bottleneck. If the cause remains unclear, gather the PC’s CPU and GPU, OBS version and log, output resolution and frame rate, selected encoder, and sustained upload result before considering a hardware purchase.
