Keep OBS connected to the same YouTube live event and switch the video in OBS—not by stopping the encoder or ending the event. Prepare the sermon videos as OBS scenes or media sources, rehearse the change, and monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room preview plus the outgoing picture and audio. This workflow reduces avoidable interruptions, but a scene change is not guaranteed to be seamless on every computer or network.
Why the stream can stay live while the video changes
YouTube receives the video feed from your encoder. OBS controls what that feed contains: its scenes arrange the stream layout, while sources can include media files. If OBS remains connected and sending its output to the existing YouTube event, you can change the program content without ending that event.

That separation is the key: keep the YouTube destination and encoder session in place, and make the sermon-video change inside OBS. YouTube and OBS document the parts of this workflow, but neither guarantees that every scene switch will be interruption-free. Rehearsal and monitoring matter.

Prepare OBS before the service
Choose a scene for each video or a replaceable media source
There are two practical ways to organize the clips:

Check each media file and its playback behavior
In OBS, add each clip as a Media Source or place it in its own scene. OBS lists local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. For every source, check the file, audio, and playback settings before service.
- Choose whether playback should restart when the source becomes active.
- Decide whether the clip should loop.
- Check what should happen when playback ends, including whether the source should be hidden.
- Review whether OBS should close the file when the source is inactive.
- Confirm the clip’s audio is audible and at the intended level in the program output.
These controls affect what viewers hear and see when a clip starts, ends, or becomes active. Select and rehearse the behavior that matches the service plan.

Set up a reliable cue
If you use dedicated scenes, assign and test scene-switch hotkeys in OBS. A regular keyboard is sufficient; a macro keypad is optional. Make the cue easy for the operator to identify, and avoid relying on an unfamiliar shortcut during worship.

Switch sermon videos without ending the YouTube event
- Start the scheduled YouTube event and connect OBS. Use the event’s YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Confirm that OBS is sending to the intended event.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before service. YouTube recommends checking the preview. Confirm the picture and audio are the expected ones before the congregation is relying on the stream.
- Keep OBS streaming when the sermon video changes. At the cue, select the prepared scene or change the active media source using the controls you rehearsed. Do not stop the encoder or end the YouTube event just to change clips.
- Watch the output after the change. Confirm the new video appears and its audio is present. Continue monitoring the outgoing picture and sound, and verify that the event is accessible on the channel and watch pages.
- End the event after the service. When the event is over, use the normal ending steps: end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Protect the YouTube stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it as a credential: use the key assigned to the event, and reset it only when there is a reason. If you generate a new key, update OBS with that key before trying to stream.

Rehearse transitions and recovery separately
Run through the actual clip sequence before service, including the scene or source changes, audio, and what happens when each video ends. YouTube also recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming the player rolls over to the backup. That is a planned failover test—not a way to switch sermon videos during worship.
Common problems and fixes
- The YouTube stream ends during a clip change: Check whether the operator stopped OBS or ended the event in Live Control Room. Keep the encoder session and event active for a content change.
- The previous video remains on screen: Confirm that the intended scene is selected or that the media source points to the correct file. Rehearse the exact cue and playback state.
- The new video appears without sound: Check the media file’s audio and OBS output before service, then monitor audio after the switch.
- A clip restarts, loops, or disappears unexpectedly: Review the Media Source settings for restart on activation, looping, hiding after playback, and closing the file when inactive. Test the chosen behavior in rehearsal.
- OBS cannot send to the intended event: Verify that the encoder is using the event’s current server URL and stream key. If the key was reset, replace the old key in OBS.
- The live event is running but viewers cannot access it: Check YouTube’s Live Control Room and verify accessibility on the channel and watch pages.
