Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf OBS says it is streaming but YouTube Live Control Room shows “Encoder disconnected,” first confirm that OBS is sending to the exact YouTube event currently open in the dashboard. Then check that event’s stream URL and key, start OBS, and look for a preview in Live Control Room. OBS’s streaming status alone does not confirm that YouTube received the feed for that event.
YouTube’s published help guidance does not define the precise meaning of the “encoder disconnected” label. Treat it as a signal-path problem to diagnose—from OBS output, through the network and ingest destination, to the selected YouTube event—rather than proof of one particular failure.

Check the event and destination first
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that it is the event you intend to broadcast, not another scheduled stream or an old event.
- Check OBS’s configured destination. Confirm that the selected service and event correspond to the event open in Live Control Room. If using a custom destination, verify that its server URL is the one provided for that event.
- Start the encoder in OBS and watch the event preview. YouTube’s setup instructions place the preview check after the encoder starts. If the preview appears in the intended event, YouTube is receiving a feed there even if the dashboard label has not yet changed. If there is no preview, continue with the checks below.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting “Go live.” Starting OBS sends the encoder feed; the scheduled event’s preview and the separate Go live action are not the same step.
A dashboard open to the wrong event can appear disconnected even while OBS is sending a feed elsewhere. YouTube describes Live Control Room as checking the stream sent to YouTube, but its documentation does not say exactly what backend state the disconnected label represents. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify the stream URL and key
A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public logs, or support posts.

- In Live Control Room, open the intended event and locate its stream URL and key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream and compare the service or server URL and key with the values for that event. Exact labels can vary by OBS version and service configuration.
- If the key is wrong, replace it with the intended event’s key, apply the settings, and start the stream again.
- If YouTube reports an encoder start error, its troubleshooting guidance recommends generating a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Resetting a key requires channel owner or manager permissions; after a reset, OBS must use the replacement key.
YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains the key’s role. Its encoder troubleshooting instructions also advise getting a new key for an encoder start error.
Read the preview, health message, and OBS statistics together
If the correct event has no preview
Recheck the event, destination, URL, and key, then inspect any error or stream-health message in Live Control Room. YouTube’s dashboard checks the feed sent to YouTube and can report issues such as format errors. An active output indication in OBS is not a substitute for confirming receipt in the intended event.
If the preview appears but the stream is unstable
Check OBS’s dropped-frame and connection statistics. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server; an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate can cause dropped frames. Lower the video bitrate only when the connection evidence suggests the current rate is too high, and confirm that the new setting remains suitable for your stream quality.

OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate planning. This is a starting guideline, not a guarantee: available upload capacity can vary, and other devices or activity on the connection can affect what is available to the encoder. OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide
Check the local network path
If the URL and key match but OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections, test the connection between the computer and YouTube’s ingest server.
- Use a known-good wired connection if practical. Wi-Fi can be unstable. Test an existing spare cable first; replacing a cable is only relevant if the test points to Wi-Fi or a faulty cable.
- Check the router, modem, cable, and network hardware. A fault or instability on any part of the local path can interrupt the feed.
- Review VPNs, firewalls, antivirus, and network-prioritization software. These can interfere with streaming connections. If you temporarily test without a VPN or with a security setting changed, do it carefully and restore protections afterward.
- Check other network use and upload capacity. If the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, try a lower video bitrate and observe whether dropped frames improve.
- Try another network path when available. If a wired or alternate connection resolves the issue, that is useful evidence that the original network path is involved.
YouTube also recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, the encoder’s output, a local recording if available, and outbound internet connectivity. If local checks do not resolve a persistent connection problem, contact your ISP. A cable cannot correct a wrong event or key, a format mismatch, a problematic ISP route, or a YouTube-side issue.

Change format or protocol only when the error points there
Do not change codecs or protocol settings just because the dashboard says the encoder is disconnected. Match the change to the specific YouTube error:
- Incorrect-format error: YouTube’s documented case calls for H.264 video and AAC audio.
- RTMPS timeout or SSL error: Verify that OBS uses the correct RTMPS URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes port 443 as a possible remedy for an SSL error.
- No preview with no format error: Return to the event, destination, key, and network checks instead of changing codecs reflexively.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting page lists its format and connection error guidance.
