You can usually remove a claimed section from a livestream archive in YouTube Studio without uploading the video again. Open the claim, choose the edit that addresses all the claimed material, preview it, and save. First back up the archive: YouTube says that since June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes cannot be reverted with “Revert to original.”
Before editing, save a copy of the livestream archive
Download the video or use Google Takeout before making changes. YouTube’s Studio Editor warning is specific: “Starting in June 2025, once you save your edited video, you will not be able to revert the changes.” The edit is made to the existing video, so a backup is the way to preserve the original. See YouTube’s instructions for removing copyright-claimed content.

Choose the edit that matches the claim
Check the claim’s details and timestamps before choosing an action. The goal is to remove or replace the entire claimed material; if any of it remains, YouTube will not remove the claim.
| Action | What it changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Trim out segment | Removes the selected interval from the video. | Removes the footage and any sound in that interval. |
| Replace song | Replaces eligible claimed music with a track from the YouTube Audio Library. | Retains the interval with replacement music, but the original song is removed. |
| Erase song | Attempts to mute the claimed song while retaining speech and sound effects. | Song-only erasure may fail, particularly if the music is difficult to separate. |
| Mute all sound in claimed segments | Mutes all audio throughout the claimed interval. | Dialogue and other sounds in that interval are lost, but YouTube says this is usually faster and more likely to clear the claim than song-only erasure. |
For a claimed video segment, trimming is the direct option. For a music claim, try replacing the song if you want to retain audio with a different track. Song-only erasure may preserve speech, but if clearing the claim is the priority, muting all sound in the full claimed interval is the more reliable audio edit according to YouTube’s guidance.

Remove the claimed segment in YouTube Studio
- Back up the archive. Download it or use Google Takeout before saving any edit.
- Open the claim. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content, find the livestream archive, open its copyright notice, and select View details.
- Choose an action. Find the relevant claim and select Take Action. Choose Trim out segment for claimed footage, or Replace song or Erase song for eligible claimed audio. If erasing the song does not address the claim, consider Mute all sound in the claimed segments.
- Set the full interval. For a trim, adjust the start and end times if needed so the whole claimed section is covered. For audio edits, make sure the full claimed interval is addressed.
- Preview before saving. Check that the footage or audio you meant to remove is gone and that you have not selected an unintended section.
- Save and wait for processing. While the edit is processing, the video remains in its previous state and you cannot make further edits. Processing time varies.
- Reload and verify. After processing finishes, reload the page. Confirm the edit was applied and check whether the claim is gone. If not, review the claimed timestamps and whether any claimed material remains; a more complete trim or mute may be needed.
If the claim remains or you think it is wrong
The claim is still present after editing
YouTube does not clear a claim if the edit leaves claimed material in the video. Check the claim details and timestamps against the saved result. If an audio-only erase did not remove the claimed song, try replacing it or muting all sound in the claimed interval. If the claim is on footage, ensure the trim covers the entire claimed segment.
You believe the claim or timestamps are incorrect
Editing and disputing are different responses. Edit when you accept the claim and want to remove or replace the material. Dispute only if you are confident you have the necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes, and an invalid dispute can lead the copyright owner to request removal. For inaccurate claim timestamps, YouTube directs creators to Creator Support. Read YouTube’s guidance on Content ID claims.

It is a takedown, not a Content ID claim
A copyright takedown request can remove the video and cause a copyright strike; it is not the same workflow as editing a Content ID-claimed archive. Deleting a video with a strike does not resolve the strike. See YouTube’s guidance on video removals.
What to know about livestream archives
YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours, including encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. That is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Archive availability does not change the post-claim editing steps. See YouTube’s livestream archiving guidance.
