The VPS must sustain the chosen bitrate continuously; FFmpeg, not YouTube, decides which video plays next. This guide covers a basic rotation setup, settings to check, and how to keep the process observable and recoverable.
How the playlist reaches YouTube Live
YouTube distinguishes the live event viewers watch (a broadcast) from the incoming encoder feed (a stream). FFmpeg reads your media and creates that feed; the YouTube broadcast does not rotate files for you. A YouTube stream can be reused for different events at different times, while separate channels require separate stream resources. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

For an ordinary FFmpeg setup, use the RTMPS ingestion address and stream key shown for your event or stream in YouTube Studio. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS; YouTube’s guidance specifies a valid ingest endpoint and port 443. Do not copy a sample key or expose your own in a script, screenshot, log, or public repository. Before you start
- A Linux VPS with your video files available locally or at a stable mounted path.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Check the installed build with
ffmpeg -version; options and codec support can differ between builds. - A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and an event or reusable stream configured in YouTube Studio.
- The event’s RTMPS ingest URL and stream key, stored so other users cannot read them.
- Enough sustained outbound capacity for the video and audio bitrate, plus headroom for network variation. Check the provider’s transfer allowance and any egress limits before committing to a 24/7 workload.
Prepare the video playlist
Use a concat list for sequential rotation
Place the media files on the VPS and create a text file such as /srv/stream/playlist.txt. Use one file directive per item, with paths appropriate to the server:

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads the listed files in order. For reliable transitions, keep the files’ codecs, resolution, frame rate, stream layout, and time bases compatible. If they differ, normalize or transcode them rather than assuming a direct copy will join cleanly. Consult the FFmpeg formats documentation for concat demuxer behavior and options.

Choose whether to copy or encode
- Stream copy: avoids video re-encoding and uses less CPU, but is appropriate only when the input assets are compatible with one another and with YouTube’s ingest expectations.
- Re-encode: provides a consistent output when source files vary, but consumes CPU continuously. Confirm the VPS can handle the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate without falling behind.
There is no single rotation command guaranteed to work for every FFmpeg build and combination of source files. Validate the concat behavior and chosen codecs on your installed version with representative assets before leaving a process unattended.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a resolution and bitrate the VPS can sustain, not merely the highest setting available. YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes the live stream into viewer output formats in the standard Live Control Room workflow.

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate settings, not guaranteed minimum VPS network speeds. The figures were verified on YouTube Help in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. Allow additional network headroom beyond the selected feed bitrate, and ask the VPS provider about sustained outbound performance and monthly transfer caps. A continuously running stream sends data all the time.
For a typical H.264 encode, use a constant-rate-control setting such as -b:v with matching -minrate and -maxrate, set -g to approximately twice the frame rate for a two-second GOP (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps), and set an AAC audio bitrate appropriate to the source and output. Exact encoder options vary by codec and build; check the installed FFmpeg encoder help and confirm YouTube Studio reports a healthy incoming stream.

Configure YouTube and start the feed
- Create or choose the destination: in YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then create or select the scheduled broadcast and its stream settings. Labels may vary as Studio changes. Copy the actual ingest URL and stream key for that destination.
- Prepare a private key file: store the key outside the playlist and restrict access to the account running FFmpeg. Avoid putting the key in a shell command that may remain in shell history or appear in process listings.
- Run FFmpeg with your chosen input and output: use the concat list as input, choose compatible copy or encoding options, and send the resulting feed to the event’s RTMPS endpoint with its key. Insert your actual values locally; do not use a published example credential.
- Check the incoming preview: wait for YouTube Studio to show the feed, then verify audio, motion, resolution, and stream health before starting or scheduling the public broadcast.
- Confirm the rotation: watch through a file boundary and verify that the next item begins with expected audio and video. Check the public playback from a separate device or network.
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

Keep the VPS process manageable
For a one-time test, a foreground FFmpeg process is easiest to observe. For longer operation, run it under a service manager or another supervisor configured to restart on failure, retain logs, and alert you when the process exits. A restart can restore the encoder process, but it does not prove the broadcast is uninterrupted; check YouTube’s stream health and playback after recovery.

- Monitor FFmpeg logs for input read errors, encoder overload, broken connections, and file-boundary failures.
- Check disk space and permissions for locally stored media and logs.
- Measure sustained VPS outbound throughput at the actual selected bitrate. A headline port speed does not establish continuous performance or the provider’s transfer allowance.
- Re-test after changing files, FFmpeg builds, codecs, bitrate, or VPS plans.
Rights, originality, and monetization are separate questions
Technical ability to loop a file does not grant permission to stream it. YouTube’s live-streaming terms require the content provider to hold necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music rights, and to comply with applicable laws. See YouTube Terms of Service.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are not the same. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and assesses a channel and its content for originality and authenticity; reused content may be treated separately from copyright. The July 15, 2025 policy notice renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. That does not mean every playlist loop automatically violates policy. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
What a low-cost VPS will actually cost
There is no reliable “cheapest India VPS” figure here: current provider plans, regional availability, sustained transfer limits, and suitable CPU capacity vary and must be checked with vendors. Compare the full monthly cost and confirm whether the plan permits continuous outbound streaming. For a copied stream, CPU needs can be lower; transcoding adds sustained compute demand. Also include storage and any bandwidth or egress charges in your estimate.
