OBS showing “Streaming” only confirms that OBS has started sending—or is attempting to send—a feed. It does not confirm that YouTube is receiving it for the event you selected, or that the event itself has been started. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the intended event and check its stream-health message and preview. If there is no preview, troubleshoot the connection, server URL, and stream key. If the preview is visible but the event is still offline, complete YouTube’s workflow and click Go live when prompted.
First identify which stage is offline
There are two separate indicators to check: OBS reports the state of its encoder connection, while Live Control Room reports what YouTube has received for a selected stream and whether that event is live. A green or active status in OBS is not proof that YouTube has the correct feed.

YouTube says Live Control Room can show stream health and analytics while a stream is running. Use the dashboard for the selected event rather than inferring YouTube’s status from OBS alone (YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics — Computer).

1. Confirm the selected event
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and check that the selected stream is the event OBS is meant to feed. If you reuse stream settings, the event and the destination saved in OBS may not match. YouTube’s encoder setup workflow provides the stream URL and key for the intended stream; use those values rather than assuming an earlier event’s details still apply (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

2. Copy the current server URL and stream key
Compare OBS’s destination with the URL and key shown in the selected event’s Live Control Room settings. Check for a stale key, a typo, or a URL copied from a different stream. If YouTube reports that the encoder cannot connect or startup fails, its troubleshooting guidance recommends generating a new stream key and updating the encoder (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
If you choose RTMPS, copy the RTMPS server URL from YouTube’s stream settings using the lock icon. A timeout can occur if the URL is wrong or the encoder does not support RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also discusses SSL-related connection troubleshooting (Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).

3. Read the exact stream-health error
Live Control Room may name a format, connection, or other stream-health problem. Follow that specific message; changing settings that the error does not implicate can create new problems. YouTube’s error-message reference explains the health indicators and format errors (Live streaming error messages).

If a preview appears, start the YouTube event
A preview means the feed is visible in Live Control Room; it is not necessarily the same thing as the event being live to viewers. In YouTube’s documented encoder workflow, start the encoder, wait for the preview, then click Go live when the control is presented. After starting, check the event status and the channel or watch page to confirm the stream is live (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

Use OBS status to diagnose delivery problems
If OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting, investigate the network path before treating the issue as an encoder defect. OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Its connection guide was published September 30, 2024 (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).
- Try Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable. A wired connection is a diagnostic step, not a universal fix. If you suspect a faulty cable, test or replace that cable.
- Lower the video bitrate to fit a stable upload rate. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting-point heuristic when lowering video bitrate. It is not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stability.
- Check OBS’s network options. Confirm Bind to IP is set to Default, unless you intentionally need another interface.
- Check for interference. Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, drivers, router or modem problems, and damaged cables where relevant.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation. It may reduce dropped frames during congestion, but it can lower stream quality and does not repair the underlying connection.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Compare the stream’s combined outbound bitrate with a stable upload connection, not just the headline speed from an occasional speed test. If the connection itself appears faulty, YouTube advises checking with the internet provider (Streaming tips).

Check OBS output against YouTube’s encoder guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you have selected; its bitrate ranges vary by those choices. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, and H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, with an upper limit of 4 seconds. For a specific “incorrect format” error, YouTube’s guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Do not apply that format correction unless it fits the error or output you are troubleshooting (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; Live streaming error messages).
Check that the encoder is actually outputting the format and bitrate you expect, then review Live Control Room’s health messages again. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting the stream and monitoring stream health as it runs (Streaming tips).

Common symptoms and targeted fixes
- OBS says streaming; YouTube has no preview: verify the event first, then copy its current server URL and key into OBS. If the values match, check the protocol, connection errors, and network.
- YouTube preview is visible; event remains offline: use the event’s Go live control if YouTube’s workflow prompts for it, then verify the event and watch page.
- OBS shows dropped frames: test a more stable connection, reduce bitrate to a sustainable level, and investigate network interference or hardware. Dropped frames alone do not prove OBS is defective.
- YouTube names a codec or format error: make the specific correction requested by the error; for an incorrect-format error, check the H.264 video and AAC audio guidance.
- Connection times out with RTMPS: re-copy the RTMPS URL from the intended stream’s settings and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS.
- One viewer says playback is failing, but the dashboard has a healthy preview: distinguish that viewer’s playback or network issue from an upstream encoder-to-YouTube problem. If the feed itself is absent from Live Control Room, troubleshoot the encoder path instead.
