Use a Jenkins Declarative Pipeline with a triggers { cron('...') } block to run website screenshot tests on a schedule, then archive the screenshots and reports so you can review failures. For visual regression testing, Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares a page with an approved baseline; a screenshot taken without an assertion is only an image for inspection.
Choose whether you need captures or visual regression tests
A scheduled screenshot job can serve two different purposes:

- Capture for review: save a current screenshot so a person can inspect it. The job need not fail when the page looks different.
- Visual regression test: compare the current rendering with a reviewed reference image and fail when the difference exceeds the configured tolerance. Playwright’s
toHaveScreenshot()supports this baseline workflow.
For reliable comparisons, generate and check in approved reference screenshots, then run the scheduled job in the same browser environment. Playwright cautions that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Its guidance is: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See Playwright visual comparisons.

Schedule a Jenkins Pipeline with cron
Declarative Pipeline scheduling goes in a top-level triggers block. Jenkins cron expressions have five fields, in this order:

H is a Jenkins hash-based value used to spread periodic jobs across time. Jenkins recommends using it where possible to help even out system load. For example, H H * * * runs once a day at a job-specific hashed minute and hour; it does not mean a fixed clock time. H/15 * * * * schedules runs about every fifteen minutes, with a hash-offset minute within each interval. See Jenkins Pipeline Syntax.
Choose the right trigger
- Use
cronfor recurring checks that should run whether or not source code changed. - Use SCM hooks or
pollSCMwhen you want builds prompted by source changes.pollSCMchecks for changes; it is not a substitute for a periodic visual check.
Schedules use the Jenkins controller time zone by default. If the run must follow another zone, Jenkins trigger documentation describes a leading schedule line such as TZ=Europe/London. Verify support and configuration on your installed Jenkins version before relying on a specific zone. See Jenkins pipelineTriggers reference.

Run Playwright in a stable browser environment
A Docker agent is one way to keep the browser environment consistent. Playwright’s CI documentation demonstrates running Jenkins jobs with a Playwright container image, installing project dependencies with npm ci, and starting tests with npx playwright test. Pin the image to a version appropriate for your project and align it with the Playwright dependency used by the tests. The version below is an illustrative pin from the Playwright CI documentation at the time this example was prepared, not a claim that it is the newest release.

Example Jenkinsfile
Commit this file at the root of the repository and configure a Jenkins Pipeline job to load the Jenkinsfile from source control. The archive patterns assume test output is written under test-results and playwright-report; change them to match your project.

The Jenkins post { always { ... } } condition archives output whether the test succeeds or fails. allowEmptyArchive: true avoids failing the post step when a configured directory is absent, but it can also conceal a mistaken path behind a warning. Check the first build’s workspace and adjust the patterns. Archived artifacts must be files in the workspace and are downloadable from the build page; retention follows the job’s build-retention configuration. See Jenkins Core Pipeline Steps.

});On the initial run, Playwright creates the reference image. Inspect it, approve it if it represents the intended page, and commit it with the test. Later scheduled runs compare against the committed reference. When a design change is intentional, use Playwright’s documented snapshot-update option only after reviewing the new screenshot; otherwise an update can replace the baseline with an unintended regression. Make the rendering repeatable
- Use the same container image, Playwright dependency, browser engine, viewport, and test settings for baseline generation and recurring comparisons.
- If you intentionally test multiple browsers or operating systems, treat their screenshots as distinct baselines rather than expecting identical pixels across environments.
- Review image diffs and configure assertion tolerance for the test’s needs; a pixel difference is evidence to inspect, not automatically proof of a product defect.
Preserve evidence from failed runs
Write screenshots, reports, and diagnostics to predictable workspace paths, then archive those paths under post { always { ... } }. Confirm that files actually appear in the workspace after the first build. If the team needs long-term audit retention or broader sharing than Jenkins build retention provides, plan for external artifact storage separately.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The job does not run at the expected clock time:
Hdeliberately hashes the run time, and the default time zone is the Jenkins controller’s. Use explicit minute and hour fields for a fixed time, check the controller zone, and consider whether simultaneous jobs will overload the controller or agents. - The scheduled job runs, but the screenshot assertion fails: inspect the actual screenshot and diff. Confirm that the baseline was reviewed and committed, and that browser, operating system, viewport, and headless settings match the baseline environment.
- The Docker agent cannot start or tests cannot find the expected browser: verify that the Jenkins agent can run Docker, that the image tag is available, and that the Playwright package and container browser versions are aligned.
npm cifails: check that the repository includes a lockfile and that it is consistent withpackage.json;npm ciinstalls from the lockfile rather than resolving a fresh dependency tree.- The archive step reports no files: check output locations in the workspace and make the archive glob match them.
allowEmptyArchive: truecan make a missing path non-fatal, so do not treat a successful post step as proof that artifacts were archived. - A periodic run is mistaken for change-driven CI:
cronstarts a job on its schedule regardless of source changes. Configure SCM-triggered builds separately if prompt feedback on commits is also required.
